Before you travel, check a few Galaxy camera settings that affect framing, privacy, file formats, low-light photos and video. There is no single best setup for every phone: Samsung says available options and menu labels vary by model and software version. Try any changes at home so you know how your camera behaves before a busy day out.
1. Turn on composition guides if they help you frame shots
Composition guides add lines to the viewfinder to help with framing and alignment. They are easy to try and can be turned off if you find them distracting. Samsung’s instructions updated September 30, 2026 give these paths:

- One UI 7 and later: Open Camera, tap Quick controls, tap Settings, then turn on Composition guide.
- Earlier software: Open Camera, tap Settings, choose Grid lines, then turn them on.
The label or path may differ on your Galaxy. Samsung’s composition-guide instructions note that settings vary by phone and software version.

On supported models, Scene optimizer detects a scene with the rear camera and automatically adjusts the photo. Samsung’s Z Flip6 guide describes adjustments to exposure, contrast and white balance; its Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE guide describes color and contrast optimization. What the control does, and whether it is available, depends on the model.

If your camera offers it, take a few ordinary photos with the setting on and off and compare them on the screen where you usually view pictures. Keep whichever result you prefer; automatic processing is a preference, not a universal improvement. See Samsung’s model-specific guides for the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE.
3. Match the photo format to how you use your pictures
Format options are not identical across Galaxy phones. Samsung documents HEIF and RAW on its Z Flip6 support page, and HEIF, RAW or JPEG on its Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE page. Check your own camera’s options rather than assuming it offers the same choices.

- Keep your familiar format if it already works for the way you share and back up photos.
- Choose RAW deliberately if you plan to edit the files; it is useful for an editing workflow, but make sure your intended apps and backup tools handle the format.
Samsung’s format information is specific to the Z Flip6 and Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE; it does not establish the available formats on every Galaxy model.

4. Choose whether photos and videos should carry location tags
Location tags attach GPS information to pictures and videos. Keep them on if place-based organization is useful to you; turn them off if you do not want location data attached to new camera files that you may share.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series manual warns: “Your location may appear on your pictures when you upload them to the internet. To avoid this, turn off the location tag setting.” The path varies by device, so look for Location tags in your Camera settings. Turning the camera option off does not remove location data already embedded in existing files. Read the Galaxy S23 series user manual.
5. Check Night mode and video controls for dim scenes
Night photos
Samsung describes Night mode as a way to take low-light photos. Its UK support guidance says, “For the best results, your phone should be kept as steady as possible while taking a night mode shot.” It adds, “If possible, use a tripod to get the perfect picture.” A tripod is optional; the practical point is to hold the phone steady during the shot.

Low-light video and stabilization
On supported Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE models, Samsung describes Auto FPS as optimizing frame rate to record brighter low-light videos, and video stabilization as an anti-shake feature for moving footage. Auto FPS may suit dim scenes, while you may prefer different frame-rate behavior in other conditions. Check which controls your model offers and try them before relying on them during a trip. 6. Check whether the camera keeps settings between launches
On supported devices, Settings to keep can preserve the last shooting mode, selfie angle or filters, so the camera may reopen with a choice you made earlier. Look for Settings to keep in Camera settings and review which items are enabled. If you want the camera to open in a predictable state, disable retention for modes or effects you do not want to carry over. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series manual also describes retaining the last setting, such as shooting mode.
7. Set up a shutter method that suits your group or framing
Some Galaxy phones offer alternatives to tapping the on-screen shutter, including capture with the volume buttons, voice commands, a floating shutter button or Show palm. These can help with group photos or hands-free framing, but availability depends on the device. Check Camera settings under Shooting methods and enable only the option you expect to use.
