To edit a document from inside Microsoft Word, install the official Claude for Microsoft 365 add-in, open its sidebar, sign in, and ask Claude to work on the relevant text. Microsoft’s Marketplace says edits appear as tracked changes and that Claude can work through comment threads, so you can review proposed revisions before accepting them.
What you need before connecting Claude to Word
- A compatible Word client: Microsoft lists Word for the web and Word 2016 or later on Windows or Mac for the add-in. Check Microsoft’s Marketplace listing for current compatibility details.
- An eligible Claude plan: Microsoft’s listing says the add-in is generally available on paid Claude plans. The separate Claude for Word listing names Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Plan terms can change; confirm current availability in the Marketplace.
- Permission to install or use add-ins: A workplace administrator may restrict add-ins or control what is available to managed accounts. Having a compatible Word version and Claude plan does not guarantee that your organization permits installation.
Install and open Claude in Word
- Find the add-in. Search Microsoft Marketplace for “Claude for Microsoft 365,” or open Word and select Insert in the ribbon, then Add-ins. Microsoft’s Office Online directions explain how to view and launch installed add-ins.
- Install or launch it. Follow the Marketplace or Word prompts to add the tool. The Marketplace listing covers Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; this guide focuses on its Word workflow.
- Open Claude’s sidebar and sign in. Use the add-in’s sign-in prompts to connect your Claude account.
- Ask for a specific change. Identify the passage or section and describe what you want, such as tightening a paragraph, revising a clause, or drafting text in a particular tone. Specific instructions help keep the request focused on the document content you intend to change.
- Review proposed edits. The Marketplace says Word edits appear as tracked changes and that Claude can work through comment threads. Read the changes in context and accept or reject them using Word’s review controls.
Choose the right way to use Claude with Microsoft content
| Your goal | Use this | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Edit the open document without leaving Word | Claude for Microsoft 365 add-in | Opens a Claude sidebar in Word; the Marketplace describes tracked changes and comment-thread support. Microsoft Marketplace |
| Have Claude analyze a Word file outside the Word sidebar | Upload the document to Claude | Anthropic lists Word files among supported formats. Non-PDF document uploads are text-extracted, so embedded images in a Word file are not interpreted through this upload path. Anthropic Help Center |
| Search or analyze files and communications across your organization | Microsoft 365 connector | A separate Claude connection for SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams. It requires a work Microsoft 365 account, and an administrator may need to enable it. It is not required just to edit the open Word document. Anthropic Help Center |
If the add-in is missing or blocked
- Check the Word version and location: Confirm that you are using Word on the web or Word 2016 or later on Windows or Mac, as listed by Microsoft.
- Confirm account eligibility: Check whether your Claude plan currently includes the add-in.
- Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator: Organization policy may limit which add-ins users can install or open. The available official information does not establish one universal deployment procedure for every Microsoft 365 tenant, so the administrator should confirm the steps for your organization.
Keep the three workflows distinct
The Word add-in works with the document open in Word. The Microsoft 365 connector is for finding or analyzing organizational content across several services. Uploading a Word file is a separate file-based workflow, and its text-extraction behavior means embedded images are not read through that route. Choose based on where the content is and whether you need in-place editing.
