A website screenshot API loads a URL in a browser environment and returns an image or PDF, so your application can capture pages without a person taking screenshots manually. For dependable results, check full-page behavior, supported image formats, PDF controls, rendering waits, authentication, and how the provider handles failures—not just whether an endpoint accepts a URL.
What a website screenshot API does
Your application sends a public URL and capture settings to a hosted rendering service. The service loads the page in a browser environment and returns a file. Some APIs also accept HTML input. This is different from a person capturing the current screen on a laptop or phone: the API performs the page load and rendering on its own infrastructure. See the documented examples from GetScreenshot and the Screenshot API reference.

Typical uses include saving reports, generating preview images, archiving public pages, and attaching a rendered document to an application workflow. The result depends on the page’s state when rendering occurs, the requested viewport or print settings, and the provider’s implementation.

How to capture a full webpage with an API
- Choose a provider and read its own request documentation. Confirm its endpoint, authentication method, supported input types, and whether full-page capture is available. Parameter names differ between APIs; for example, one may document a
fullPageoption, but that does not mean another accepts the same parameter. - Set the capture scope. Request a full-page image to capture beyond the initial viewport, or specify a viewport or element if you only need part of the page. Full-page support is documented by GetScreenshot, Screenshot API, and RelayPDF, but the sources do not establish identical behavior across providers.
- Account for dynamic content. If a page loads content after its initial response, look for options to wait for a selector, a delay, or a page/network-idle condition. Lazy-loaded images may need scrolling or a provider-specific full-page setting. Do not assume a full-page option alone guarantees that every deferred asset has loaded.
- Request the desired output format. Check the API’s exact format names and any image-quality controls. PNG, JPEG/JPG, and WebP appear in the reviewed vendor documentation, but availability and settings vary. Save the returned bytes using a file extension that matches the requested format.
- Check response status and file handling. Handle authentication errors, timeouts, and failed page loads according to the provider’s documented response behavior. For production, define how your application stores, serves, or deletes output files.
For an integration that can accept URL or HTML input and documents full-page image capture, PDF output, asynchronous jobs, and bulk workflows, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to consider: it removes known consent banners and other overlays before capture, and only clean shots are billed.
Can a screenshot API export a website to PDF?
Yes, some do, but PDF support is not interchangeable with image output. A provider may use the same endpoint with an output-format setting or a separate PDF endpoint. GetScreenshot documents PDF generation and PDF page controls; Screenshot API documents PDF support; RelayPDF distinguishes its URL/HTML image endpoint from PDF generation; and ScreenshotNeo documents image and PDF formats.

Before choosing an API for documents or archiving, verify whether it lets you control paper size, orientation, margins, scaling, page ranges, and printed backgrounds. These settings affect pagination and appearance. An image capture and a PDF print render can differ, so confirm that the provider’s PDF behavior suits your intended use rather than assuming it is just a full-page image inside a PDF.
What to compare when choosing a screenshot API
| Decision | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Formats | Supported image formats, quality controls, and whether PDF has a separate request path. | File type and compression affect downstream compatibility and storage. |
| Full-page capture | How to request it, limits for long pages, and handling of lazy-loaded content. | “Full page” is an option, but implementations and parameter names vary. |
| Rendering controls | Viewport dimensions, device scale, dark mode, selectors or clipping, and wait behavior. | These controls help reproduce responsive layouts and capture the intended content state. |
| PDF controls | Page size, orientation, margins, scaling, page ranges, and printed backgrounds. | These choices determine document pagination and whether colors or backgrounds appear. |
| Integration and scale | Authentication, synchronous versus asynchronous jobs, batch capture, output retention, and usage reporting. | Workflow limits affect how an API fits a single request or a larger capture pipeline. |
| Failure and billing behavior | What happens for bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits; whether responses identify the result and charge. | A clear failure and billing model makes costs easier to monitor. |
| Evidence for performance | Whether speed, uptime, or visual-quality statements are vendor claims or independently verified results. | The vendor pages reviewed document features, not an apples-to-apples independent comparison. |
Capabilities documented by vendors are not evidence of comparative reliability, latency, or fidelity. The reviewed sources do not provide a consistent independent test or pricing table, so compare current provider documentation and terms directly rather than treating feature descriptions as a ranking.

Documented API examples
The following are examples of documented capabilities, not recommendations based on comparative testing:
- ScreenshotNeo: Its documentation covers URL or HTML inputs, full-page capture, image and PDF formats, asynchronous jobs, and bulk workflows. It also offers cookie-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup; those cleanup steps can be switched off. See ScreenshotNeo’s documentation.
- GetScreenshot: Its product page describes PNG, JPEG, and WebP output, viewport or full-page captures, PDF generation, rendering parameters, and PDF page controls. See GetScreenshot.
- Screenshot API: Its REST reference documents authentication, image parameters, a
fullPageoption, and PDF support. Follow its own request reference rather than borrowing another provider’s parameter names. See Screenshot API documentation. - RelayPDF: Its page describes a URL/HTML image endpoint with a
fullPageoption and other capture controls, separate from PDF generation. See RelayPDF’s screenshot page.

Costs, reliability, and implementation checks
Pricing and service claims should be checked on the provider’s current plan and documentation pages. The reviewed materials do not establish a comparable price table or independently verified uptime, speed, or image quality across providers. For a production decision, estimate request volume, find out how unsuccessful captures and retries are treated, and test representative pages—including long pages and pages with delayed content—before relying on output in a customer-facing workflow.
- Confirm whether the API returns file bytes directly, a URL, or a job identifier that must be polled.
- Check documented limits for request size, capture duration, page length, batch size, and retention before designing around them.
- Use provider-specific error handling and avoid blind retries for pages that consistently block automated access.
- Protect API keys as secrets; do not expose them in client-side code if the provider requires authenticated requests.
- Validate the actual output format and PDF pagination in your application rather than relying only on a successful HTTP response.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The image stops at the initial viewport
Enable the provider’s full-page option using the exact parameter name in its own documentation. If the page is unusually long, check for provider limits and whether the capture must wait for deferred content.

Images or page sections are missing
Dynamic content may not have rendered before capture, or images may load only after scrolling. Increase or change the wait condition using supported controls, and check whether the provider documents special handling for lazy-loaded images.
The output format or file cannot be opened
Verify that the requested format is supported and that the saved file extension matches the response. If the provider returns an error document or JSON instead of image bytes, handle the response status and content type before writing a file.

The PDF pagination looks wrong
Check the PDF-specific settings for page size, orientation, margins, scaling, and backgrounds. A PDF endpoint may use print layout behavior rather than the same rendering path as an image endpoint.

The request times out or returns a failed capture
Confirm authentication, target URL accessibility, and the provider’s timeout and failure response behavior. A page with bot checks or access restrictions may not be capturable through a hosted renderer; inspect the provider’s documented page-verdict or error information if available.
Frequently asked questions
Does a full-page image include every part of a very long site?
Not necessarily. Full-page capture extends beyond the visible viewport, but page-length limits and lazy-loading behavior depend on the provider and page. Check those details in the selected API’s documentation.
Can I send HTML instead of a live URL?
Some providers document HTML input as well as URL input. Confirm how the chosen API accepts HTML and whether linked assets, stylesheets, or scripts need to be available to its renderer.
