How to Stream Recorded Sermons to YouTube Live from Ubuntu Server 24.04

To stream a recorded sermon as a YouTube Live broadcast from Ubuntu Server 24.04, prepare a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then use an encoder such as FFmpeg to play the file at normal speed and send its audio and video to YouTube over RTMPS using that broadcast’s ingestion address and stream key. Test the actual file and connection before the service, and monitor YouTube’s stream health while it runs.

How the YouTube Live connection works

YouTube separates the incoming encoder feed from the viewer-facing broadcast. The stream receives the audio and video your Ubuntu server sends; the broadcast is what viewers watch. Select or create the intended broadcast, then use the associated stream settings when configuring the encoder. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference.

Use the ingestion address and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP; its RTMPS guidance specifies a valid endpoint and path over port 443. Do not substitute an address copied from an unrelated example. Treat the stream key as a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, and source control. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Prepare the Ubuntu server and sermon file

The exact FFmpeg package version and encoder capabilities on a particular Ubuntu Server 24.04 installation, as well as the codecs and readability of your sermon file, must be checked on that host. Do not assume the file needs conversion: inspect it first, then decide whether the server can pass its streams through or needs to encode them.

  1. Check the file. Use a media-inspection tool available on your server to identify its video and audio streams, codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio channels. Confirm the Linux account that will run the encoder can read the file and that its path is correct.
  2. Check FFmpeg locally. Confirm FFmpeg is installed, note its version, and verify that the build has the encoder and RTMPS/protocol support needed for your chosen output. Package sources and builds can differ; do not rely on an assumed feature set.
  3. Choose pass-through or encoding. If the input streams are suitable for YouTube and the output can preserve them, stream copy avoids a new encode. If they are incompatible or you need a different resolution, frame rate, or codec, transcode and verify that the server can do so in real time. A command that works depends on the file’s actual streams and the local FFmpeg build.
  4. Protect credentials. Keep the YouTube stream key private. Avoid putting it in a command that may be retained in shell history or exposed to other users; use an appropriately protected configuration or secret-handling method for your environment.

Choose output settings for YouTube

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Confirm the local FFmpeg build supports the exact codec combination you select. YouTube’s published H.264 examples are:

Output Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published H.264 minimum and recommended values, not a guarantee of picture quality or proof that your internet connection can sustain the chosen rate. The appropriate target depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, source material, and stable upload capacity. A sermon with little movement may not need a high frame rate, but keep the output within YouTube’s supported settings and judge it by an actual test.

Its live encoder recommendations may vary by setting and table context, so use the applicable current guidance for the exact output you select rather than treating one figure as universal. YouTube recommends AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps in its encoder guidance. Set resolution, frame rate, audio, and keyframe interval deliberately, and make sure the output contains one video stream and one audio stream.

Send the recording from FFmpeg

There is no single verified Ubuntu 24.04 command that is safe to prescribe without knowing the input file and installed FFmpeg build. Once you have inspected those, configure FFmpeg to read the sermon from its local path, play it at normal speed, produce a YouTube-compatible audio/video output, and publish to the precise RTMPS address and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Set the output’s video and audio streams explicitly; use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval when encoding to match YouTube’s guidance.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, select the intended broadcast and retrieve its associated ingestion address and stream key.
  2. On the server, verify the input path, file permissions, available encoders, and RTMPS support. Decide on stream copy or real-time transcoding based on the inspection results.
  3. Configure the output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio codec and bitrate, and keyframe interval. Ensure there is one audio and one video stream.
  4. Publish over RTMPS to YouTube’s exact endpoint and path with the selected stream key. Keep the key private.
  5. Watch the preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. Start the public broadcast when the feed is ready, and monitor it for the duration of the sermon.

If your sermon file was made in OBS, its container is not by itself a reason to convert it. OBS identifies MKV as its default and resilient local-recording format, while MP4 is broadly compatible but requires finalization; FLV is associated with RTMP and has limited H.264/AAC codec support. The server encoder reads the local input and packages the outgoing stream for its selected protocol, so inspect the real file rather than converting based on its extension alone. See the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

Test and monitor before going live

YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream, using audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Run a full preflight long enough to check that the sermon plays continuously, speech is audible, audio and video stay synchronized, and upload capacity remains stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube’s LiveStreams API health diagnostics can identify issues including unsupported codecs, bitrate problems, missing audio or video, multiple streams, unsupported resolution, long keyframe intervals, and starved video. Use the displayed health messages to narrow down the cause rather than assuming a successful local FFmpeg launch means viewers receive a healthy stream. See the LiveStreams API reference.

Keep an unattended Ubuntu stream running

For a service that must continue without an operator at the console, run the encoder under a suitable process supervisor or scheduler, retain logs securely, and decide how to handle failures, restarts, and alerts. The right policy depends on your deployment; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a particular systemd unit or guarantee a restart strategy. Test the recovery path before relying on it for a service.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that the selected broadcast’s stream key matches the encoder configuration, and verify the exact ingestion endpoint, RTMPS path, port 443 access, and local protocol support.
  • Unsupported codec or resolution: Compare the actual encoded output with YouTube’s supported settings. Confirm the local FFmpeg build can produce the selected codec; transcode if pass-through is not suitable.
  • Keyframe or GOP warning: Set a two-second keyframe interval when encoding and ensure it does not exceed YouTube’s four-second limit.
  • Bitrate warnings or unstable video: Check the encoder’s configured rate and sustained upload capacity. Choose a supported resolution and bitrate your connection can maintain; inspect YouTube’s health messages for low/high bitrate or starved video.
  • No audio, no video, or duplicate streams: Recheck the input file’s streams and explicitly select one audio and one video stream in the output configuration.
  • File fails to open: Verify the path and permissions for the account running FFmpeg, then check the file’s actual codecs and whether the installed build can decode them.
  • Process stops during an unattended run: Review the encoder and supervisor logs, then test the restart and alert policy you configured. A supervisor can restart a process, but it cannot correct a bad key, incompatible file, or inadequate network connection by itself.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not maintain an Ubuntu encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream from the cloud. Upload the sermon, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
