Panther’s documented takeScreenshot() call does not guarantee a full-page capture. For a quick attempt, measure the document, resize the browser window, then take the screenshot—but this is a community-reported workaround, not a reliable Panther feature. If you need Chrome-specific capture beyond the viewport, Chrome DevTools Protocol provides Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport: true.
What Panther’s screenshot method captures
Symfony Panther is a PHP library for browser testing and web crawling that drives real browsers through WebDriver. Its README documents a screenshot call such as $client->takeScreenshot('screen.png'). The client delegates screenshot capture to WebDriver; the documented call alone does not establish that the entire scrollable page will be captured.

For a full-page attempt, you have two distinct routes: resize the browser window through Panther/WebDriver, or use Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP). The first is a workaround with uncertain reliability; the second is a Chrome-specific protocol feature, not a built-in cross-browser Panther convenience method.

A Panther issue opened February 20, 2023 shows a community workaround: read the document’s scroll dimensions, resize the browser window to match, and take the ordinary screenshot.

Install and run a basic Panther capture
Install Panther with Composer, following the project’s current browser and driver setup instructions. The exact driver setup depends on your browser and environment, so confirm the current README instructions before configuring a machine or CI runner.

Run it from the project directory with php path/to/your-script.php. If the target page renders content asynchronously, wait for the relevant element before measuring dimensions. Panther’s README documents waiting for rendered elements; choose a selector that indicates the content you actually need is present.

What can go wrong with resizing
- Responsive layout changes: changing the window width can trigger a different layout, so the dimensions measured before resizing may no longer describe the page after the resize.
- Dynamic or lazy-loaded content: the script measures the document as it exists at that moment. It does not establish a universal way to trigger content that appears only after scrolling or additional loading.
- Very tall pages: the cited issue does not establish a maximum size or guarantee that the browser and driver will produce a complete image at arbitrary dimensions.
- Browser differences: this is a community example using Panther and WebDriver, not a guarantee of consistent behavior across Chrome, Firefox, remote browsers, or every page.
The issue author explicitly questions whether the workaround will work in every case. Treat the saved image as something to inspect, and test the exact browser, page, and runner you intend to use.

Use Chrome DevTools Protocol to capture beyond the viewport
Chrome DevTools Protocol documents Page.captureScreenshot, including the captureBeyondViewport option. Its default is false; setting it to true enables capture beyond the viewport. CDP also supports an optional clip region and PNG, JPEG, or WebP output. See the Chrome DevTools Protocol Page reference.
This is a Chrome protocol route, not proof that Panther’s ordinary takeScreenshot() wrapper exposes a cross-browser full-page option. To use it, your PHP application must access and send commands through a Chrome DevTools Protocol connection; the protocol documentation describes the browser capability, but Panther’s cited README does not provide a built-in Panther full-page method or a ready-made CDP integration recipe.

Choose CDP when Chrome-only behavior is acceptable and you can manage the protocol integration. Choose the resize attempt when you want to stay with Panther’s ordinary WebDriver calls and can validate the result. Neither route is established here as a universal solution for arbitrary page sizes or dynamic content.
Run Panther with local or remote browsers
Panther documents Chrome and Firefox clients, WebDriver-based operation, and remote browser services including BrowserStack and Sauce Labs. Remote execution can help when your tests need a browser environment provided elsewhere, but it does not change the distinction between a regular screenshot call and a guaranteed full-page API. Check the current Panther project instructions and the chosen service’s own setup documentation for the applicable driver and configuration details.

Troubleshoot an incomplete or missing screenshot
- The image contains only the visible viewport:
takeScreenshot()by itself is not a documented full-page guarantee. Try the resize workaround and inspect the output, or implement Chrome CDP capture withcaptureBeyondViewport: true. - The page is blank or missing content: wait for a page-specific rendered element before measuring and capturing. A navigation request finishing does not by itself prove that all application content has rendered.
- The screenshot layout differs from the browser’s normal page: resizing can change responsive breakpoints. Compare the dimensions and layout before and after resizing; the workaround may not suit pages whose content reflows.
- The script cannot start Chrome: verify that Panther’s required browser and compatible driver are installed and available to the process. Follow the project’s current setup instructions, since driver installation details can change.
- The screenshot is cut off on an unusually long page: the cited sources provide no general maximum dimensions or cross-browser guarantee. Test the target page and browser; do not assume a larger window will always yield a complete capture.
