Why am I getting a 429 error from my screenshot API?
HTTP 429 means “Too Many Requests.” The IETF’s RFC 6585 defines it as a client sending too many requests in a given time, but leaves the server free to decide how it counts requests and identifies a user. A limit might be scoped to an API key, account, IP address, endpoint, or another provider-defined bucket; the standard does not prescribe a universal request window.
Providers also differ in how they represent exhausted monthly allowances. ScreenshotEngine documents both temporary rate limiting and monthly quota exhaustion as possible 429 causes, while Screenshot API documents 429 for rate limiting and 402 for a spent monthly quota. Treat these as provider-specific examples, not universal status-code rules. Check the code and message in your own response and the provider’s usage page or documentation.
How do I fix a 429 rate limit?
- Confirm the response is an API error. Record the HTTP status, response body, content type, and relevant response headers. Screenshot endpoints return image bytes on success, so check the status and content type before saving a response as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Otherwise, you may mistake a JSON error for a corrupt image. ScreenshotEngine’s troubleshooting guide also recommends checking these fields.
- Read the error code and check usage. Look for a machine-readable code or message indicating a request-window limit, concurrency cap, or exhausted allowance. Compare it with your account dashboard or usage endpoint. Don’t assume a 429 always means the same thing across vendors.
- Wait for
Retry-Afterif it is present. Its value can be a delay in seconds or an HTTP date. Parse the format and wait at least the indicated time before retrying, rather than repeatedly calling the endpoint. This behavior is defined in RFC 9110. - Reduce request rate and concurrency. Smooth bursts, cap the number of renders in flight, and coordinate workers that use the same API key or other shared rate-limit bucket. A queue with a controlled number of workers is often more effective than launching every URL at once.
- Retry only temporary failures, with limits. If no
Retry-Afteris supplied, use increasing delays with jitter and a maximum attempt count. ScreenshotEngine gives three retries as an example, not a universal rule. Don’t retry invalid input, bad credentials, or a confirmed spent monthly quota as if waiting would fix them. A client timeout can occur after a capture succeeded, so an indiscriminate retry may produce a duplicate request; ScreenshotEngine notes that this can result in a duplicate billed capture. - Queue bulk work asynchronously if supported. For large batches, use the provider’s async job mechanism where available. It can reduce simultaneous synchronous requests, but it does not bypass that provider’s quota or rate rules.
- Escalate with safe diagnostics. If the error continues after the indicated wait and usage checks, send support the endpoint and method, approximate request time, status, response code and body, and relevant non-secret rate-limit headers. Include useful request options if requested, but remove API keys, authorization values, cookies, and other secrets.
What does Retry-After mean?
It tells a client how long it ought to wait before making a follow-up request. Per RFC 9110, the value is either a number of seconds or an HTTP date. A robust client should handle both forms; if the header is absent, use a conservative, bounded backoff rather than an immediate retry loop.

Example retry logic
The following Python helper illustrates parsing both standard forms and falling back to capped exponential backoff with jitter. It deliberately retries only 429 responses; callers should still avoid retrying a response whose provider-specific error code means the account has exhausted its quota.

Is my screenshot API quota exhausted?
Possibly. A 429 alone cannot establish that: one provider may use 429 for a monthly allowance, while another uses a separate status such as 402. Confirm through the response’s error code and your account’s usage information. If the monthly allowance is spent, repeated retries will not replenish it; check the provider’s reset schedule or account options.
Compare the provider’s actual limit rules
Before changing a client, look up the fields that determine how your specific account is limited. Vendor settings can change, so use the current documentation and account view rather than copying another service’s values.
