Best Montage Editing Software for Gaming Videos

DaVinci Resolve is a strong default for gaming montages, while Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and CapCut may better suit specific workflows. Learn what to compare and how to test performance with your own footage.

DaVinci Resolve is the strongest default choice for most gaming montages if you want a capable desktop editor on Windows, macOS, or Linux without committing first to an Adobe workflow. Premiere is worth evaluating if you already use Adobe tools or edit with a team; Mac-only creators may prefer to compare Final Cut Pro; and creators focused on quick vertical highlights may get more value from a short-form-oriented editor such as CapCut. The right choice depends on your footage, workflow, and computer—not on a universal “best” label.

What makes an editor good for gaming montages?

A montage depends on timing and clarity as much as effects. Before choosing software, check whether it gives you the controls your style needs and can play your actual recordings smoothly.

  • Pacing: Look for precise trimming, keyframes, speed changes or ramps, and a practical way to cut to music beats.
  • Visual treatment: Masking, tracking, effects, animated text, and slow motion help emphasize a play, but should support rather than obscure it.
  • Audio: Separate tracks for game sound, microphone, voice chat, and music make it easier to balance the action and narration.
  • Delivery: Consider both landscape video and vertical reframing, plus captions and titles if you publish short highlights.
  • Fit: Check platform support, learning curve, project handoff needs, and whether the licensing model suits you. Verify current prices, plan limits, and system requirements with the vendor for your region before you commit.

No editor can supply good pacing automatically. The source clips, selection of moments, music, and decisions about when to let a play breathe all shape the finished montage.

Which gaming video editor should you choose?

Editor Best fit What to weigh
DaVinci Resolve Creators who want one desktop application for editing, color, effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its broad toolkit makes it a strong default, but test your footage and allow time to learn the workflow.
Adobe Premiere Creators already relying on Adobe tools, or teams that need a collaborative workflow. Check current plan costs, system requirements, and the workflow fit before subscribing.
Final Cut Pro Mac users who want to evaluate an editor built for their platform. Compare its workflow and current licensing terms with your needs; it is not the cross-platform default in this shortlist.
CapCut Creators whose priority is fast short-form or vertical highlights. Templates, captions, quick reframing, and turnaround may matter more here than deep media management. Check current availability and features for your device and region.

The product descriptions above are broad positioning, not a guarantee that every feature is present in every version or plan. Blackmagic Design, Adobe, and Apple provide official product information for their respective editors; TechYorker’s September 6, 2026 comparison maps the tools to gaming workflows and reports price and feature checks made August 16, 2026. Why DaVinci Resolve is the best default for many creators

Resolve is a useful starting recommendation when you want to do more than assemble clips: the application brings editing, color work, effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production together. Its support for Windows, macOS, and Linux also makes it a practical option if you do not want your choice tied to one desktop operating system.

For a montage, try the controls that affect rhythm first: trim tightly, use keyframes where motion needs emphasis, test speed changes on action, and listen to the cuts against the soundtrack. Add masks, tracking, titles, and effects only where they make the sequence easier to follow. Because performance depends on the footage and computer, do not assume that a gaming PC will edit every recording smoothly.

When another editor may fit better

Choose Premiere when Adobe or team workflow matters

If you already depend on Adobe tools or need to work with teammates in an Adobe-centered process, Premiere deserves a close look. Compare the current subscription terms and technical requirements for your location and setup instead of assuming an old price or plan still applies.

Evaluate Final Cut Pro if you edit on a Mac

Mac-only creators may want to compare Final Cut Pro against Resolve and their existing workflow. Check the current product details and licensing directly with Apple before making a purchase decision.

Consider CapCut for rapid vertical highlights

If your main output is short vertical clips, quick captions, templates, and reframing can matter more than advanced media management. CapCut is identified as a fit for this style in the TechYorker comparison; verify the current feature set and availability for your device and region.

Check performance with your own gameplay footage

Resolution and frame rate alone do not tell you whether editing will be smooth. Codec, hardware decoding, CPU and GPU, memory, storage speed, timeline settings, and proxy options all affect playback. A high-end graphics card used for games does not automatically remove bottlenecks elsewhere in the editing chain.

VideoPad Video Editor - Create Professional Videos with Transitions and Effects [Download]
  • Apply effects and transitions, adjust video speed and more
  • One of the fastest video stream processors on the market
  • Drag and drop video clips for easy video editing
  • Capture video from a DV camcorder, VHS, webcam, or import most video file formats
  • Create videos for DVD, HD, YouTube and more
  1. Make a representative test project. Import clips from the game, capture method, resolution, frame rate, and audio setup you actually use.
  2. Scrub and preview an action-heavy section. Notice dropped or delayed playback, audio lag, and whether effects make the timeline harder to review.
  3. Try the editor’s performance workflow. Adjust timeline playback settings or use proxies if available, then see whether the same footage becomes manageable.
  4. Check export and playback. Render a short sample and review it outside the editor before settling on a tool or workflow.

If possible, keep original recordings intact and copy active project media to fast storage. A portable external SSD can be useful for organizing or moving gameplay files, but the necessary capacity and speed depend on your recording format, library size, and computer; no particular model or minimum capacity is established here.

A reliable montage workflow

  1. Capture footage separately from editing. Recording software captures gameplay; an editor assembles and finishes the video. They solve different jobs.
  2. Preserve and organize the source files. Keep originals, arrange clips in folders, and label useful moments so you can find them again.
  3. Select the story before polishing. Gather the strongest plays and decide what sequence makes the montage understandable, rather than applying effects to every clip.
  4. Build the cut and manage separate audio. Tighten pauses, shape the rhythm, and balance game audio, microphone, chat, and music on separate tracks where possible.
  5. Add motion and graphics deliberately. Use speed changes, keyframes, masking, tracking, animated text, or slow motion when they clarify or emphasize a moment.
  6. Export for the destination. Choose the aspect ratio and frame rate for the intended platform, then inspect the exported file for cut timing, captions, audio balance, and sync.

Variable-frame-rate recordings or separately captured audio sources can cause sync problems. If sync remains unreliable after editing, inspect the source and consider making a constant-frame-rate intermediate before bringing it back into the project.

Common problems and fixes

  • Timeline playback stutters: Test the project with representative clips, lower playback demands using the editor’s timeline or proxy workflow, and check whether the footage codec or storage is the bottleneck.
  • Audio drifts out of sync: Check for variable-frame-rate footage or independently captured audio. Review a short export; if the issue persists, try a constant-frame-rate intermediate.
  • A montage feels rushed or flat: Revisit clip selection and cut timing before adding more effects. Use speed changes and beat-led cuts selectively, and leave enough context for a viewer to understand the play.
  • Vertical output crops important action: Reframe the clip for the vertical canvas and check each shot, captions, and titles in the final aspect ratio rather than relying on a single automatic crop.
  • The project is hard to reopen or hand off: Keep original media organized and make sure the project can still locate its source files before moving folders or changing machines.

Keep a YouTube channel live while you edit

Editing software and continuous streaming solve different problems. If you want to keep a YouTube channel running from uploaded gameplay videos while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud; it is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
