A website error does not, by itself, prove that your hosting provider is responsible. To narrow down where the failure occurs, record the exact error and time, compare the normal public route with a direct request to the origin when possible, and check logs along the request path. The comparison gives you stronger evidence for a support ticket—but a failure at the origin can still come from your application, web server, host infrastructure, or another origin-side component.
Start by capturing a reproducible failure
Before changing settings or restarting services, preserve what happened. A screenshot can help show what a visitor saw, but it does not capture all the details needed to diagnose the request.

- Record the full URL that failed, including its path.
- Copy the exact HTTP status code and error message, if available.
- Note the date and time, including the timezone.
- Save response headers and command output when you can, and record whether the failure repeats.
Cloudflare’s guidance for troubleshooting 5xx errors asks site owners to provide the exact code or message, time and timezone, and URL when contacting a hosting provider: Cloudflare 5xx errors.
Compare the public route with the origin
A public request follows the route visitors use. Depending on your setup, that can include DNS, a CDN or proxy, a firewall, a load balancer, and the origin server. A direct-origin request—if your deployment permits one—bypasses some of those intermediaries and helps locate which part of the path may be involved.

- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
- LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
- INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience

- Test the public URL. Use the failing URL as visitors access it. Record the status, message, headers, and time.
curlcan display response details without a browser rendering the page. For example, curl -i https://example.com/pathprints response headers and the response body. Replace the example URL with your own. - Test the origin if you can do so safely. Use the origin IP or your deployment’s documented method for reaching it directly. Preserve the site’s hostname and TLS behavior; a request to an IP alone may produce a different result because virtual hosting or certificate validation depends on the hostname. Cloudflare documents a direct-origin comparison and a
curlapproach in its site troubleshooting information. - Compare like with like. Request the same path, method, and relevant hostname as far as your setup allows. Record the time and returned status, message, and headers for each route. If the origin is intentionally inaccessible from your network, do not weaken its protections just to run this test; use provider support or an approved diagnostic path.
curl is useful for observing an HTTP response and headers, and Cloudflare also documents using it to inspect request timing. It does not render the page or execute JavaScript, so it is not a complete simulation of what happens in a browser.
Read the comparison as evidence, not a verdict
| Public route | Direct origin | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Fails | Fails in a similar way | The problem may be at or behind the origin: investigate the application, web server, origin connectivity, and hosting environment. This does not establish which component—or party—is responsible. |
| Fails | Responds normally | Investigate the parts of the public route that the direct test bypasses, such as the CDN or proxy, DNS or routing, TLS configuration, cache, or firewall rules. |
| Responds normally | Fails | The direct test may not be preserving the production hostname, TLS, routing, or access conditions. Check that the comparison reflects the actual deployment before drawing conclusions. |
| Results vary or do not reproduce | Results vary or do not reproduce | Repeat the comparison at recorded times and retain each result. Intermittent failures can require matching request times with logs or checking whether different routes reach different backends. |
A 5xx status describes an error observed during a request; it does not identify who caused it. Cloudflare advises checking the origin and relevant intermediaries rather than treating the status alone as proof of fault: Cloudflare’s 5xx troubleshooting guidance.

Check the logs along the request path
Look for evidence at the time of the failed request and correlate entries using whatever request identifiers your system records. The origin server’s error log may not contain the cause: Cloudflare Support notes, “The cause of the error is not always found in the origin server’s error logs.”

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Origin and application: Check web-server and application logs for errors, timeouts, rejected requests, or resource problems.
- Intermediaries: Where present, inspect load balancer, cache, proxy, and firewall logs. A request may fail before it reaches the origin, or an intermediary may reject or time out while forwarding it.
- DNS, routing, and TLS: Compare the failing hostname and connection details with the configuration used by the public route. These can fail independently of application code.
For Cloudflare deployments, its Error Analytics can group errors by code and show related URLs, source IPs, and Cloudflare data centers. Cloudflare states that these analytics use a 1% traffic sample, so they are sampled diagnostics rather than a complete record of every request. See Cloudflare 5xx errors.

Not only network cables, but also phone lines and BNC cables.
Use Cloudflare error headers when applicable
If Cloudflare is in the request path, inspect cf-error-type and cf-error-origin when they are present. Cloudflare documents these headers on error pages it generates; they are not present on errors it forwards from the origin. Their categories include DNS or routing, Workers exceptions or resource limits, and origin connectivity. These clues can help distinguish an edge-generated error from an origin-forwarded one, but they are specific to Cloudflare and do not replace checking logs. See Cloudflare error diagnostic headers.
Use uptime checks as another vantage point
An external monitor can show whether a failure is visible from outside your own network and whether it recurs. Google Cloud’s public uptime checks periodically send HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP requests from multiple locations. Those checks do not load page assets or execute JavaScript, and default checks do not authenticate, so a passing check does not prove that every visitor-facing feature works. The documented capabilities are described in Google Cloud public uptime checks.

Escalate with a testable support request
Send your hosting provider the evidence rather than a conclusion about blame. Include the failed URLs, exact status or message, timestamps with timezone, and the results from the public and direct-origin routes. Add relevant response headers and log excerpts, and say which intermediaries are in the request path. Ask the provider to check origin reachability and the infrastructure logs relevant to those times.
