Gemini Notebook can help you turn selected YouTube videos into a study guide: add their links as notebook sources, ask focused questions, and generate a learning aid from the material. You’ll need to choose and add the videos yourself. Google’s instructions support adding YouTube links, but do not say that Gemini Notebook automatically imports your YouTube watch history or an entire playlist.
Can Gemini Notebook summarize YouTube videos?
Yes. Google lists YouTube video links as a source type, and describes exploring video content with answers that include citations linked to the transcript. You can use the resulting notebook to ask questions about the material and create study aids grounded in its sources. That makes it useful for organizing selected videos around a class, exam, or subject—not for automatically converting an uncurated watch history into notes.

Google’s current help material calls the product Gemini Notebook; its product page says NotebookLM became Gemini Notebook in July 2026. Older guides may use the previous name. See Google’s Gemini Notebook Help and its announcement about video sources and transcript-linked citations.
How to turn selected YouTube videos into study notes
- Create a notebook for a specific purpose. Choose a course, topic, exam, or research question. A focused notebook makes it easier to ask useful questions and understand how each source contributes.
- Add the video links you want to study. Copy the URLs of selected YouTube videos and add them as sources in the notebook. Treat this as a deliberate selection step: the cited Google help does not establish automatic import of a playlist or watch history.
- Add material that supplies context. Include relevant class notes, slides, PDFs, or websites when available. Videos may explain a concept, while course materials can clarify which terminology, examples, or scope matter to your class.
- Ask questions that organize or test the material. Start with a concrete request, such as “Compare how these videos explain [concept]” or “List the key terms and define each using the sources.” Then follow up on unclear points or ask where two sources agree or differ. Gemini Notebook chat is designed to answer from notebook sources with inline citations.
- Generate a study guide or practice material. Google’s Gemini Notebook Help lists study guides among the formats it can create. Gemini Apps help also describes study notebooks, diagnostic quizzes, personalized lessons, progress tracking, flashcards, and infographics, though access and availability vary. For a guide, ask for a structured outline of the main ideas, definitions, examples, and questions to review.
- Check the citations before relying on the result. Open the cited passage and compare it with the transcript and video context. A citation helps you trace an answer to a source; it does not guarantee that a summary is complete or correct, or that a brief excerpt preserves the full meaning.
Choose a workflow for the way you study
| Approach | What to add and request | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Quick recall | Add a small selection of video links and generate one study guide. | Reviewing a focused topic when you mainly need an organized refresher. |
| Deeper exam preparation | Add videos alongside course notes and slides; use focused follow-up questions and create quizzes or flashcards where available. | Preparing across several lessons when you need course context and interactive practice. |
The second approach takes more source-selection effort, but gives the notebook more context and supports practice beyond rereading a summary. Feature access may differ by account and platform, so the available output options can vary.

Can you ask questions about a video and get citations?
Google describes notebook chat as grounded in its sources and says it provides inline citations. Its announcement about YouTube support describes citations linked to the video transcript. Use those links to inspect the relevant source material, especially when an answer will inform an exam response or an important claim. A citation is a way to check the answer, not a substitute for checking it.
Use Audio Overview as an optional review format
If listening helps you review, you can optionally create an Audio Overview. Google’s starter kit describes it as generating “a lively podcast-like conversation that delivers key takeaways and connects topics from your sources.” It can offer another way to revisit a notebook’s material, but it is not a replacement for checking the video, transcript, or course notes. See Google’s Gemini Notebook starter kit.

Check access before planning around study features
Google’s help pages describe availability as dependent on factors including country or territory, age, account type, rollout, platform, and settings. Some notebook features require Keep Activity to be on; Google specifically says study notebooks require it. Its Gemini Apps help page says study notebooks are available on the web app but not the mobile app at the time of access, while notebook availability and rollout can differ. Check Gemini Notebook Help and Gemini Apps Help on notebooks for current account and feature details.
