If a web teleprompter preview looks upright but its saved video is sideways or stretched, the preview and recording may be using different orientation information. The practical fix is to wait for the camera’s first frame, check the image the video element actually displays, then record either the camera stream or a canvas stream based on what that check shows.
Why an upright preview can save sideways
A browser camera workflow typically gets a MediaStream through getUserMedia(), displays it in a <video> element, and gives a stream to MediaRecorder. These stages can disagree: camera-track dimensions, the pixels drawn by the video element, and rotation information in the saved file do not necessarily describe orientation the same way. A CSS transform can make the preview look upright without proving the recorded pixels or file will have that orientation.

A WebKit report describes this in a specific setup: an iPhone 15 running iOS 26.6 with Safari. In one test, track settings initially showed requested dimensions, then changed after the first camera frame appeared. The reporter observed that first frame 356–451 ms after getUserMedia() resolved; this is a single test result, not a typical delay or a measure of how often the issue occurs. The report remains a device-specific bug report, not confirmation of a defect on all iPhones. WebKit bug 323550
The same reporter describes landscape-reporting track behavior on an Android device in Chrome, but that observation does not establish the behavior for Android phones or browsers generally. Fuad Laguda’s report and workaround

Fix the recording path by checking the actual frame
- Start the camera on a secure page. Request camera access, attach the returned stream to the preview video, and handle the permission prompt.
getUserMedia()requires user permission and a secure context, such as HTTPS or localhost. MDN: getUserMedia() - Wait for a frame before trusting track dimensions. Do not decide the recording orientation immediately when the camera request resolves. Wait until the video has produced and painted a frame; the reported iPhone test saw track dimensions change after that point.
- Inspect what the video element draws. Draw a frame to a small canvas and determine its actual orientation—for example, by checking which corners contain pixels—then compare that with the camera track’s settings. The relevant question is not only what dimensions the track reports, but what image the preview is rendering.
- Choose a recording stream based on the comparison. If the drawn frame and track agree, recording the raw camera stream may be appropriate. If the frame is portrait but the raw track behaves as landscape, draw the rendered frame to a canvas and record the canvas-generated stream instead. Canvas streams can be used with MediaRecorder; WebKit documented this capability in its MediaRecorder overview. WebKit: MediaRecorder API
- Check the saved file on the devices that matter. Play or inspect the recording, checking orientation, framing, and resolution. A correct-looking live preview is not proof that the encoded file will play correctly.
Choose between raw video, full-frame canvas, and a crop
| Recording approach | When it fits | Framing and quality considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Raw camera stream | The displayed frame and track settings agree. | Avoids adding a canvas crop, but still verify the saved file’s orientation and playback on target devices. |
| Full rendered frame through canvas | The orientation actually drawn by the video element disagrees with the raw track’s reported behavior. | Preserves the rendered frame rather than forcing a portrait crop; verify output resolution and playback. |
| Canvas crop | The source frame is wide but the intended recording is portrait. | A crop changes framing and can produce an extreme close-up if its dimensions are chosen from misleading track settings. Check the actual rendered frame before selecting the crop. |
Why a guessed center crop can fail
In an earlier attempt, the author took a center 9:16 crop from a reported 1080-by-1920 image. The resulting 608-by-1080 slice was an extreme close-up. The corrected approach was to measure what the video element actually drew, then use either the full-frame canvas path or an intentional crop. Those dimensions describe that reported attempt, not a recommended output size. Fuad Laguda’s report and workaround
What the landscape-dimensions workaround does—and does not—show
For the author’s tested setup, requesting landscape ideals—width: { ideal: 1920 } and height: { ideal: 1080 }—made the phone select a preset and turn the picture to match how it was held. This is a workaround reported for that setup, not a universal requirement or guarantee for mobile browsers. The article’s useful point is to verify the actual rendered frame and saved recording rather than assume requested dimensions determine the result. Fuad Laguda’s report and workaround

What is known about iPhone, Android, and browser support
- iPhone and Safari: WebKit bug 323550 concerns front-camera MediaRecorder orientation and includes the iPhone 15/iOS 26.6 reproduction. The issue was open in the report; it does not establish that every iPhone is affected. WebKit bug 323550
- Android and Chrome: The Android evidence is an author-reported device result. It is not a cross-device test covering Android models, browsers, or releases. WebKit bug 323550
- Recording formats: WebKit’s 2020 MediaRecorder article documented Safari support at that time, including MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, and recording canvas-generated tracks. Browser and codec support vary, so check supported types at runtime rather than assuming a format works everywhere. WebKit: MediaRecorder API
Screen-orientation locking is not the same as correcting the camera frame or encoded stream. The reported workaround inspects the rendered image and selects a recording path; the cited reports do not establish that locking the screen fixes the saved video.
