It can free storage if you uninstall an app, and disabling a particular app may help you investigate a problem when there is evidence that app is misbehaving. Google does not identify a universal set of preinstalled apps whose removal makes Pixel phones faster.
What removing apps can—and cannot—do
Storage and memory are different. Storage holds items such as photos and music; memory is used to run apps and Android. Freeing storage can help a phone run better, but that does not establish that a specific preinstalled Google app is causing lag. Google flags a Pixel that has less than 10% of its storage available as one that may have issues. That is a troubleshooting threshold, not a promise that crossing it will make the phone faster. Google’s Pixel storage guidance and slow-phone troubleshooting steps explain the distinction.

There is no published speed-gain figure for removing preinstalled Google apps in the official guidance cited here. Before removing anything, check whether storage is actually low and whether a particular app is implicated.
Check storage and try the low-risk fixes first
- Open Settings > Storage and check how much space is available. If less than 10% is free, review large files and apps you no longer need rather than assuming a Google app is the cause. Google’s free-space guidance covers storage and app data.
- Check for Android and app updates, then restart the phone. These are part of Google’s recommended steps for a slow Pixel. Follow the current prompts on your device; exact labels can vary by Android version.
- If a particular app seems involved, clear its cache only when appropriate. Cache is temporary data; clearing it can make the app load more slowly the next time it opens. Clearing the app’s storage is different: it permanently deletes that app’s data. Read Google’s explanation of cache and app data before choosing.
Use safe mode to test whether a downloaded app is responsible
Safe mode helps distinguish a problem caused by a downloaded app from one that persists without those apps running. If the slowdown goes away in safe mode, Google recommends removing recently downloaded apps one at a time and checking the phone after each removal. If it remains, deleting a random group of preinstalled apps is not a diagnosis. See Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance for the safe-mode steps for your device.

Choose the action available for the specific app
There is no universal safe-to-remove list for every Pixel model and Android version. The action shown for an app in Settings determines what you can do. Google says some system apps that came with a Pixel cannot be deleted, while most can be disabled. Depending on the app, the available action may be uninstall, disable, or neither.
- Open Settings > Apps > All apps.
- Select the app and review the available controls. If Uninstall is offered and you no longer need the app, uninstalling can free the storage it uses.
- If it is a system app and Disable is offered, use that only if you understand what depends on it. Disabling hides or turns off the app; it is not proof that the phone will run faster.
- If neither option is available, leave the app in place. Do not try to force-remove a system component to chase an unverified speed benefit.
Google documents these limits in “Disable apps that came with your Android device.” The exact controls can differ across Android versions.

Do not remove Google Play services
Google Play services is integrated with Android, and Google says it cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled. Do not treat it as a cleanup target; removing it is not a supported Pixel speed fix. Google states this in its battery-drain troubleshooting guidance.

For apps you keep but seldom open, Android may automatically optimize them by deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, limiting background activity, and stopping notifications. These changes can affect an app’s behavior when you return to it, so check its permissions and notifications if something you rely on stops working. See Google’s guidance on managing unused apps.

If updates, a restart, storage checks, and app diagnosis do not resolve the slowdown, Google’s advanced troubleshooting includes a factory reset. It removes device data and apps; back up what you need before proceeding. It is a recovery step, not routine app cleanup. Follow Google’s instructions for a slow Pixel.
