A professional web developer portfolio works best when it quickly shows the kind of work you want to do, presents a few relevant projects clearly, and lets a reviewer verify your contribution. Start by curating strong examples and improving their documentation; use GitHub, a dedicated website, or both. A separate website is an option, not a universal requirement.
What should your portfolio help a reviewer understand?
Make it easy to answer three questions: What kind of work are you seeking? Which projects best demonstrate that you can do it? What did you personally contribute? A portfolio is not an inventory of everything you have built. It is a selective presentation of evidence for a particular role or kind of client.

Choose a target before choosing projects. A concise professional bio can give a high-level picture of who you are and the work you are looking for, as GitHub recommends in its profile guidance.
Which projects belong in a web developer portfolio?
Choose projects for relevance and quality, not simply because they are recent or numerous. GitHub recommends pinning three to five projects on a profile. That is practical guidance from GitHub, not a proven hiring threshold or a guarantee of interviews.

- Prioritize work that demonstrates skills relevant to your target role or client.
- Include a personal project when it clearly shows your decisions and capabilities.
- Include collaborative or open-source work when you can identify your own contribution and point to evidence of it.
- Leave out weaker or redundant examples; a short, legible selection is more useful than a long catalogue.
MDN similarly advises including only a few significant items in each section so a hiring manager does not lose interest. The goal is to make the strongest relevant work easy to find.
How should you present each project?
Give each project a clear entry point before expecting someone to inspect the code. GitHub recommends making showcased work easy to understand and explore, with a concise overview, key features, setup instructions, and an example or demo when available.

Write a useful repository README
Put the project’s purpose and the information needed to try it near the top of its repository documentation. Include what it does, its main features, how to set it up and run it, and a demo or example if one exists. Be explicit about prerequisites or limitations that affect someone trying it. A reviewer should be able to decide whether to explore further without first decoding the codebase.

Use a short case study for work that needs context
For a project whose value is not obvious from a screenshot or repository, explain the problem or goal, your role, important implementation choices, and the result or current state. Link to the live work and source where available. This is a practical structure for making a project understandable, not a formal standard.

Make the evidence easy to inspect
Use working links to the live project, source code, and relevant examples. If a demo is unavailable, say so plainly and provide the best available way to understand or run the project. Do not imply that a project is live, maintained, or complete unless that is true.
How can you prove what you contributed?
Distinguish clearly between work you made yourself, work you built with a team, and contributions to someone else’s project. For collaborative work, describe your specific role rather than claiming the whole project. Link to the actual changes when possible: relevant pull requests, commits, published documentation, or a changelog. MDN’s job-search guidance specifically recommends explaining what you contributed, how it improved the project, and which technologies were involved, with links to the changes and a changelog or pull request where appropriate.

Both formats can present work effectively. GitHub offers pinned repositories and project documentation; a dedicated website provides a separate place to organize the portfolio and its presentation. MDN says a dedicated website with a dedicated domain can be better for containing a portfolio, but the official guidance does not establish that every developer needs one.

| Format | Useful when | What to make clear |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub-centered profile | You want reviewers to find selected repositories and inspect their documentation and source. | Choose relevant pinned projects, keep their documentation readable, and make your role in collaborative work verifiable. |
| Dedicated website | You want a separate place to organize project explanations, visual examples, and links. | Make the work easy to navigate and connect each project to evidence such as a demo or source repository where available. |
| Both | You want a curated overview as well as inspectable repositories. | Keep project descriptions and links consistent, and ensure each route leads to useful evidence rather than a dead end. |
Choose based on how quickly your target reviewer can find relevant work, how much context or visual presentation your projects need, and whether source and contribution links are easy to inspect. A domain or separate site is useful only if it serves those goals.
Quick Recap
How do you assemble and check the portfolio?
- Set the target. Decide which role or kind of client the portfolio should support, then write a concise bio that reflects that aim.
- Curate the projects. Select a small number of strong, relevant examples. GitHub’s suggested three to five pinned projects is a useful profile guideline, not a universal rule.
- Improve each project’s entry point. Add a concise purpose statement, key features, setup and run instructions, and an example or demo when available.
- Clarify ownership and contribution. Label personal, team, and open-source work accurately, and link to relevant changes where possible.
- Choose a presentation format. Use a GitHub profile, a dedicated website, or both according to the context and evidence your work needs.
- Review the visitor’s path. Open the links as a reviewer would: confirm that projects are easy to find, explanations are understandable, and demonstrations or source links lead to the work described.
What should you avoid?
- Do not treat a large project count as proof of quality; keep the selection focused.
- Do not make reviewers infer what a project does from code alone when a short overview and instructions would help.
- Do not present team or open-source work as solely yours; state your part and link to evidence.
- Do not add a separate website just because you assume every candidate needs one. Use it when it makes the portfolio more useful to its audience.
- Do not claim that a portfolio guarantees interviews or hiring results. The cited official guidance offers recommendations, not a measured hiring effect.
