A practical way to pair digital convenience with a separate physical playback option is to buy an original DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K/UHD combo pack that includes a digital code. Redeem only a valid, unused code from the original package, and check the code issuer’s and Movies Anywhere’s current terms. The digital entitlement is still a license, and eligibility and service rules can change.
What does “buying” a digital movie mean?
A digital purchase is governed by the retailer’s license and platform terms. The Federal Trade Commission explains that clicking “buy” may grant only a license to access content, subject to restrictions such as digital rights management (DRM), account status, or the service continuing to operate. Movies Anywhere’s terms likewise say its service is a license, not a sale or assignment of rights, and that buying a license to stream or download its content does not create an ownership interest in the movie. That does not mean every digital purchase works identically: the applicable terms depend on the retailer and service. It does mean that a digital library can depend on your account, the platform, the license, DRM, and whether the title remains available. The exact access rights are defined by the terms that apply to the purchase.
How the disc-and-code option works
A legitimate combo package gives you two distinct things: the physical disc in the package and, if it qualifies and is successfully redeemed, a licensed digital entitlement. Movies Anywhere’s terms cover combinations with DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K/UHD discs. They require the code to be authorized, unexpired, valid, unused, and obtained in its original package by you or a family member. A code included in a combination pack may not be sold separately. - The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
- Choose a package that includes a digital code. Check the package details for the disc format and whether a code is included; do not assume every disc has one or that every code is eligible for Movies Anywhere.
- Use the code from the original package. Confirm its expiration and redemption instructions, then redeem through the issuer or service specified by the package.
- Check eligibility and retailer connections. If you want the movie in Movies Anywhere, confirm the title and code qualify and connect the participating retailer accounts you use.
- Keep the disc. It remains a separate playback option; the digital redemption does not replace the physical copy.
A loose code bought separately may be unauthorized or fail the service’s conditions. Avoid buying one on the assumption it will work, and do not circumvent DRM.
What you own—and what you do not
Buying the disc gives you that physical copy; it does not give you the movie’s copyright. The Copyright Act identifies exclusive rights held by the copyright owner, including reproduction and distribution. It also says that, after ownership of a particular copy has been transferred, the copyright owner’s distribution right in that particular copy generally does not include further transfers of that copy. Those rules distinguish ownership of a copy from ownership of the underlying work. 17 U.S.C. § 106.
The physical disc and the digital entitlement are separate. A disc provides a playback route that does not depend on a digital retailer’s library, as long as the disc and compatible hardware remain usable. A digital code, when valid and eligible, adds licensed access under the relevant terms; it does not make the digital copy permanent, transferable, or DRM-free.

Movies Anywhere can connect eligible movie entitlements across participating retailer libraries. Its current terms list Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Google Play/YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV, and DIRECTV. A connected title may appear through eligible linked accounts, subject to title availability and each retailer’s own rules. Not every movie qualifies. Movies Anywhere Terms of Use.

As stated in those terms, the service is for legal residents of the United States, its territories, and the listed associated states, and is personal and noncommercial. The terms list Disney (including Twentieth Century Film), Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner Bros., and Lions Gate as participating studios. These details can change, so check the current terms and title eligibility before relying on them.
Downloads and simultaneous playback
Movies Anywhere’s current terms allow downloads on up to eight compatible devices at a time. A device must connect to the internet and log in to the account at least once every 90 days for downloaded movies to remain available for playback through that device. The terms also allow up to four concurrent streams per account, with no more than two streams of the same eligible movie at once. These are operational service limits, not a promise that every title is downloadable or available on every device. Movies Anywhere Terms of Use.

Digital library or disc: which trade-offs matter?
| Consideration | Digital purchase or code redemption | Physical disc |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Depends on account, license, DRM, retailer or service operations, and title availability. | Offers a separate playback route while the disc and compatible player work. |
| Convenience | Eligible movies can be accessed through connected libraries and supported devices without handling a disc. | Requires storing the disc and using compatible playback hardware. |
| Resilience | Streaming or re-download may be affected by title availability or service terms. | Does not rely on a digital locker, but the disc can be lost, damaged, or become unplayable. |
| Code value | An included code may add licensed digital access if it is valid, unused, in-region, and eligible. | The disc remains a physical copy whether or not its bundled code is redeemable. |
| Setup and cost | Check the package price and the applicable redemption and playback requirements. | Compare the package’s disc formats with the DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K/UHD hardware you have. |
Why neither format is a forever guarantee
Movies Anywhere says entitlements remain in a collection subject to their ongoing validity and the service’s terms. It warns that a movie might not be available for later streaming or re-download in some circumstances and reserves the ability to change features, supported devices or platforms, and service availability. A digital entitlement should therefore be treated as licensed access, not a permanent guarantee. Movies Anywhere Terms of Use.

A disc avoids reliance on a retailer’s digital locker, but it is not indestructible: physical damage, loss, or incompatible or failed hardware can prevent playback. For a U.S. consumer who wants both convenience and another way to watch, an original disc-and-code package is a reasonable hedge—not a transfer of copyright or a promise of permanent digital access.
