Porting a number to Straight Talk and porting one away are different processes. For a number coming to Straight Talk, the company says the transfer could take up to seven days and requires an active number plus details from the current carrier. If you are leaving Straight Talk, you need its Number Transfer PIN; once the transfer completes, Straight Talk service ends immediately and unused plan days are lost.
First, identify which way the number is moving
A port-in means bringing a number from another provider to Straight Talk. A port-out means transferring a Straight Talk number to a different provider. The provider releasing the number supplies information needed for the transfer, so the required account details and service consequences differ by direction.

Before starting either process, confirm that the destination provider can accept the number and that the phone you plan to use is compatible with its service. Straight Talk says a customer-owned phone must be unlocked and compatible; its available information does not establish that every transfer requires buying a new physical SIM.

Straight Talk Support says its port-in process could take up to 7 days. The FAQ does not promise that every transfer will take seven days, give an average, or break the estimate down by current carrier, number type, or delay. Treat it as Straight Talk’s stated possible duration for a port-in, not a guaranteed completion deadline.

How to start a port-in to Straight Talk
- Keep your current line active. Confirm that the number is still active with the provider it is leaving.
- Collect the account details. Get the account number and one-time transfer PIN from the current provider, and verify the account holder name and billing address.
- Check your device. Make sure a customer-owned phone is unlocked and compatible with Straight Talk. Locate its IMEI/ESN, and have a Straight Talk SIM card number available if you have one or the flow asks for it.
- Begin activation with Straight Talk. Use Straight Talk’s activation process; its support page says an automated assistant guides customers through activation and number transfer.
- Follow any status or correction requests. The stated “up to 7 days” is not a guarantee. If a transfer is delayed or the information is rejected, check that the submitted account details match the current provider’s records and contact the relevant provider through its current support channels.
How to port a number away from Straight Talk
Straight Talk’s terms say customers porting out need the Number Transfer PIN it provides, plus certain account information. The terms reviewed do not specify a current PIN-retrieval menu or exact workflow, so use Straight Talk’s current account or support channels to obtain the PIN rather than relying on an unverified sequence of app or website screens. Ask the new provider what additional account details it needs before submitting the transfer.

Do not assume that Straight Talk service will remain available after the number moves. Its Terms and Conditions of Service state that when the phone number is transferred, Straight Talk service is deactivated immediately and unused service days remaining in the plan are lost. Consider the timing before initiating the port if you have prepaid days left.
Plan for emergency calling during a transfer
Straight Talk warns that during the transfer, 911 operators may not be able to locate the caller until porting is complete. Be prepared to tell the operator your location, and follow the emergency-calling instructions provided by the carrier handling the transfer. Do not rely on automatic location information during this period.

Why other porting-time figures may not apply
Timing figures from other contexts are not interchangeable with Straight Talk’s port-in estimate. An FCC document surfaced in a 2023 search discusses a two-and-a-half-hour porting interval in the context of an industry-agreed interval for wireless port-out authentication; it is not a promise of end-to-end completion for a consumer transfer. The FCC also has 2003 guidance stating that wireline-to-wireless or wireless-to-wireline ports may take up to four business days. That historical guidance is not current timing advice for a Straight Talk port-in.
