Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Neither feature makes supplied markup safe. Treat AI-generated text, HTML, CSS, and URLs as untrusted input: render plain text as text, sanitize rich HTML, and keep styling choices within a documented component interface.
How slots and Shadow DOM work together
A custom element defines reusable browser behavior. Its Shadow DOM can hold the element’s internal markup and styles, while slots provide places where the component can display children supplied by the page using it. MDN describes Shadow DOM as attaching a DOM tree whose internals are hidden from JavaScript and CSS running in the page; that encapsulation is about component boundaries, not trust. A slot in the shadow tree receives matching light-DOM children. An unnamed slot receives children without a slot name; a named slot matches a child’s slot attribute to the slot’s name. Fallback content inside a slot is displayed when no matching child is assigned. See MDN’s slot element reference.

<!-- Inside the component's shadow tree -->
<slot name="name">Guest</slot>
<slot>No details supplied</slot>
The caller supplies the two child nodes; the component decides where its shadow tree places them. If the named child is absent, the first slot’s fallback appears. If no unnamed child is provided, the second slot’s fallback appears.

What theming does—and does not—mean
Shadow DOM prevents ordinary page selectors from styling nodes inside the shadow tree, and internal styles do not style the rest of the page. This reduces accidental style collisions, but it also means a component should intentionally define how consumers may customize its appearance. The platform does not prescribe one universal theme mechanism.
Choose and document the styling inputs the component supports—for example, selected host-level custom properties or exposed parts—and keep internal structure and unsupported styling details private. The right interface depends on how much customization callers need and how consistently the component must preserve its design. Scoped styles and a public theme interface are separate design decisions.

Do not treat a closed shadow root as a security boundary. Closed mode limits ordinary access through the element’s shadow-root property, but it is not dependable protection against inspection or manipulation; browser extensions and other capabilities can bypass that convention. MDN’s Shadow DOM guide discusses the distinction.
Can AI safely edit a Web Component?
There is no special security guarantee for AI-generated code or content. Apply the same untrusted-input rules you would apply to content from a user or an external service. An edit that changes a component’s JavaScript, template, styles, or data flow should be reviewed before it is accepted; generated markup, style values, and URLs should not be inserted or applied merely because a model produced them.

The safest rendering choice depends on what the feature needs:
- Plain text: assign it with
textContentrather than parsing it as HTML. OWASP identifies this as a basic safe way to populate the DOM with untrusted data, while noting that safety depends on context. OWASP DOM-based XSS Prevention Cheat Sheet. - Rich HTML: if user- or AI-supplied formatting is a real feature requirement, sanitize the markup using a maintained sanitizer or an appropriate native API, with an explicit policy for allowed elements and attributes. Do not insert unsanitized HTML.
Rendering rich HTML inside Shadow DOM
Shadow DOM does not sanitize its contents. Inserting an untrusted string through an HTML parsing sink remains security-sensitive even when the target is a shadow root. Removing <script> elements alone is not sufficient: unsafe behavior can arise from other markup and attributes. OWASP also warns that changing sanitized markup afterward can undo the sanitizer’s protection. OWASP Cross Site Scripting Prevention Cheat Sheet.

MDN documents the HTML Sanitizer API and identifies ShadowRoot.setHTML() as an XSS-safe method for inserting sanitized HTML. Prefer it over ShadowRoot.innerHTML for untrusted HTML where it is supported. Check support against the browsers your component must serve. If the API is unavailable, use a suitable maintained sanitizer rather than falling back to unsanitized insertion. MDN: HTML Sanitizer API and MDN: ShadowRoot.setHTML().
Sanitization is a policy decision, not a generic cleanup step. Define which formatting the feature needs, allow only the corresponding elements and attributes, and avoid modifying the sanitized result afterward. If the feature only needs text, do not expand its attack surface by accepting rich HTML.

Keep AI-provided CSS and URLs constrained
Do not let untrusted input define arbitrary CSS declarations, selectors, or component structure. Keep property names and stylesheet structure under application control, and accept only validated values for the specific properties the component supports. Validate URL-bearing values against the destinations and schemes your feature permits. OWASP’s XSS guidance covers CSS and URL contexts as well as HTML. OWASP Cross Site Scripting Prevention Cheat Sheet.
Content Security Policy and Trusted Types can add defense in depth. They do not replace context-appropriate output handling or sanitization. OWASP describes Trusted Types enforcement for DOM injection sinks in Chromium-based browsers; assess browser support and deployment requirements before relying on it. OWASP Content Security Policy Cheat Sheet.
Choose the component boundary for the job
| Choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Plain text instead of rich HTML | The content needs no user-controlled formatting. | Text rendering avoids HTML parsing; rich formatting requires sanitization and a defined allowlist. |
| Shadow DOM instead of light DOM | The component needs scoped internal styles and an encapsulated implementation. | External page styles cannot freely reach internal nodes; light DOM is easier to style and compose directly from the document. |
| Native Sanitizer API instead of a library | The supported browser set implements the required API and behavior. | Native support must be checked across target browsers; a library needs deployment and maintenance but can address browsers outside native support. |
| Closed instead of open shadow root | The component API should discourage ordinary direct access to its root. | Closed mode is an access convention, not dependable security protection; root visibility also affects debugging and integration. |
These choices solve different problems. Slots decide where caller-supplied children appear; Shadow DOM scopes implementation and styles; sanitization and validation address untrusted content. Keep each boundary explicit rather than relying on one feature to provide the guarantees of another.
