Web Application Server: What It Does and How It Works

A web application server runs or supports application logic behind dynamic web responses. Learn how that role differs from HTTP delivery and how Tomcat’s servlet container fits.

A web application server runs or supports the server-side work behind a web application. It processes requests that need application logic—such as retrieving data and filling a page template—so a client can receive a dynamic response. It is a functional role, not one universally separate kind of product: deployments may combine application-server functions with an HTTP web server or run them in separate components.

What does a web application server do?

When a browser requests a page, the server-side application may need to interpret the request, run code, consult other resources such as a database, and prepare a response. Application-server functionality executes or coordinates that application behavior. The resulting response may be dynamic: for example, software can insert database content into an HTML template before the page is sent to the browser. MDN explains this dynamic-server model.

The exact meaning of “web application server” varies with context. It is most useful to understand the work a component performs rather than assume the phrase names a single standardized product category.

How is it different from a web server?

An HTTP web server receives HTTP traffic and returns responses; it can also deliver static files, such as images or files that do not need application processing. Application-server functionality handles the application behavior needed to generate dynamic responses. One deployment may keep those functions separate, while another product or runtime may combine them.

Function Typical responsibility
HTTP web server Receives HTTP requests and returns responses; may serve static files.
Application server Runs or coordinates application logic for dynamic content, potentially using templates and data sources.

This is a distinction between responsibilities, not a rule that every system must use two separate programs. As the Jakarta Servlet Specification, section 1.2, puts it, “The servlet container is a part of a web server or application server that provides the network services over which requests and responses are sent, decodes MIME-based requests, and formats MIME-based responses.”

What happens to a request in a servlet-based application?

In the Jakarta Servlet model, a servlet container provides request-and-response network services and manages the lifecycle of web components. A simplified flow is:

  1. The client sends an HTTP request, which reaches the server environment.
  2. The container decodes the request and maps it to the relevant web component.
  3. The component runs the application behavior and can use other resources, such as beans or a database, to prepare content.
  4. The container formats the response; the web server returns the resulting HTTP response to the client.

This describes the Servlet model, not a required architecture for every web application. Containers may be included in a web server or application server, and deployments differ in how they arrange the surrounding components.

Is Apache Tomcat a web server or an application server?

Apache Tomcat is precisely described as a Java servlet/JSP container used to develop and deploy web applications and web services. It illustrates the container role; it should not be taken to mean that every product called an application server has the same scope.

Tomcat’s version-specific capabilities matter. The Tomcat 11 documentation identifies version 11.0.25, dated August 12, 2026, and says it implements Servlet 6.1 and Pages 4.0. Those details apply to that documented release, rather than to Tomcat versions generally. See the Tomcat 11 documentation.

How does Tomcat route and package web applications?

Tomcat’s 10.1 documentation describes each web application as a Web Application Archive (WAR) or its unpacked directory. It selects the application for an HTTP request by matching the request URI to the application’s context path. This is Tomcat’s documented deployment model; packaging and routing conventions vary across implementations. See the Tomcat 10.1 documentation.

What should you compare when choosing an application server?

Compare the runtime against the application you need to run and the way you will operate it. Useful dimensions include:

  • Programming model and APIs: confirm that the runtime supports the frameworks and interfaces the application requires.
  • Deployment format: check how applications are packaged and deployed, such as whether the runtime expects archives or another format.
  • Included services: identify which runtime functions are provided and which must be supplied separately.
  • HTTP integration: determine whether the runtime handles HTTP traffic itself or is designed to work with a separate web server or reverse proxy.
  • Operations: assess configuration, monitoring, and scaling needs for the intended deployment.
