Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can convert VHS to DVD at home in two ways: copy the tape directly with a VCR/DVD recorder, or capture it to a computer and then author and burn a DVD. A recorder is simpler; a computer gives you more control and can leave you with a separate digital file. Either way, the VCR must play the tape in real time, so choose the method that matches your equipment, editing needs, and playback plans.
Choose the method that fits your equipment
| Factor | VCR/DVD recorder | Computer capture |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | A working VCR/DVD recorder that plays VHS and records to compatible blank discs. | A working VCR, compatible analog video capture device, computer and capture software; a DVD writer may also be needed. |
| Setup | Simpler: copy from tape to disc using the recorder’s controls. | More steps: connect the VCR, capture the video, then author and burn a DVD. |
| Editing and digital file | Limited editing; the primary output is a DVD. | More flexibility for editing, file format and storage; you can keep a digital file as well as make a DVD. |
| Trade-off | Convenient, but the result is lossy and difficult to edit. | More flexible, but adds setup and cost. |
The Canadian Conservation Institute notes that there is no single solution for every situation. For a straightforward viewing copy, a recorder may be enough. If you want to edit footage or preserve an additional file, consider computer capture. The actual ports on your VCR and capture hardware determine which cables or adapters you need.

Before you start: check the tape and connections
- Confirm that the VCR works. The tape has to play for either method to record it. Check the equipment and tape condition before committing to a long transfer.
- Stop if the tape looks damaged or playback seems unsafe. Do not force a damaged cassette through a machine; valuable or fragile tapes may be better handled by a qualified digitization service.
- Match the video and audio connections. For computer capture, the device must accept the VCR’s output and be compatible with your computer’s operating system and software. Roxio’s legacy guide recommends S-Video when both VCR and capture device support it; otherwise use a compatible composite connection. Verify current compatibility before buying hardware.
- Decide whether the DVD is the only copy you need. If the footage matters, plan to keep a separate digital file rather than relying on the DVD alone.
Method 1: Copy VHS directly with a VCR/DVD recorder
This route works if you have a functioning combo unit that plays VHS and records to DVD. Connect it to a TV or monitor so you can see its menus and watch the transfer. Consult the manual for the exact controls and compatible disc types.

- Insert a blank, compatible recordable DVD.
- Choose a recording mode. Longer modes fit more video but trade away picture quality.
- Cue the VHS tape to the point where you want the copy to begin.
- Start copying using the recorder’s instructions, then monitor playback and recording.
- Finalize the disc if the recorder requires it for playback in other DVD players. Check the manual: some recorders finalize automatically, while others let you record without finalizing. A finalized disc cannot accept more content.
For one Panasonic recorder workflow documented by the Canadian Conservation Institute, approximate DVD-R capacities are one hour in XP/HQ, two hours in SP and four hours in LP. These are example-recorder figures, not universal capacities or a guarantee of quality on every machine. The Institute recommends XP for maximum quality and notes the quality trade-off with SP.

Method 2: Capture VHS on a computer, then make a DVD
Computer capture turns the VCR’s analog output into a file. You can then edit or store that file and use DVD-authoring software to create a disc. The process requires compatible connections and software, and the tape must play for the duration of the recording: a two-hour tape takes roughly two hours to capture, before editing or authoring.
- Connect the VCR’s video and audio outputs to an analog capture device. Use S-Video if both devices support it; otherwise use the matching composite connection.
- Connect the capture device to the computer and open compatible capture software.
- Play the tape and record the signal in the software. Check the beginning and sound before capturing an entire tape.
- Save the captured video file, then edit it if needed.
- Use DVD-authoring software to create a DVD-compatible project and burn it with the computer’s DVD writer. If the computer has no DVD writer, an external writer may be required.
- Test the finished disc in the player you intend to use.

How to balance DVD length, quality and preservation
A DVD is convenient for playback, but it is not the best sole preservation copy for important footage. The U.S. National Archives recommends preservation copies that are high resolution, high bitrate, use little or no compression, and use open or non-proprietary formats. Its guidance says a preservation copy should last “for years or decades”—a preservation goal, not a guaranteed lifespan for any particular disc or file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf preserving family or historical material is the priority, keep the captured file on suitable storage in addition to any DVD access copy, and plan to make new copies as formats and storage change. VHS itself has a finite lifetime, and playback equipment is nearing end-of-life, according to the Canadian Conservation Institute; the cited guidance does not establish one universal lifespan for every tape.
