How to Set Up Router Port Forwarding—and Find What’s Blocking It

A forwarding rule routes specified inbound traffic to one device—but the service, device firewall, router settings, and public WAN path must all be ready.

Port forwarding tells your router to send incoming traffic for a specified port and protocol to a particular device on your local network. It does not start the service on that device: the app must be running, listening on the right port, and allowed through the device’s firewall. The connection must also reach your router’s public internet address.

What a port-forwarding rule does

A router’s forwarding rule matches incoming traffic—typically by port and protocol—and directs it to one chosen device on the local network. For example, a rule can send outside requests for a service’s TCP port to the computer hosting that service. Google describes this as sending a connection request received on a specified port to a specified device in its Port forwarding or port opening guide.

The rule is scoped to the traffic and destination you specify; it does not expose every device on your network. Nor does it create a server, open an app, or make a stopped service respond. Think of it as a route to the device, not a guarantee that the device will answer.

What you need before configuring it

  • The service’s actual port and protocol: Get these from the app, device, or service documentation. It may require TCP, UDP, or both; do not guess. Router interfaces may ask for an external port, an internal port, or both. Google’s instructions describe separate internal and external port fields and protocol selection for IPv4.
  • A running service on the target device: Confirm that the application is active and listening on the required port. The device firewall must also allow the connection. ASUS troubleshooting guidance says to check that the LAN device has opened the port.
  • A stable local address for the device: The rule must point to the intended device even after it reconnects. Reserve its LAN IP address in the router or otherwise ensure the address will not change. NETGEAR recommends that a server device always have the same IP address and documents address reservation in its port-forwarding setup guide.
  • A reachable public WAN path: Your router needs to receive the inbound connection from the internet. If another router or your ISP’s carrier-grade NAT sits upstream, a rule on your local router alone may not be enough.

How to set up port forwarding

Router menus and labels vary by model and firmware. Look for a section named Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, or Port Opening; follow the documentation for your specific router.

  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Identify the service requirements. Record the port number or range and whether it uses TCP, UDP, or both. Use the service’s own documentation.
  2. Make sure the service is ready. Start it on the target computer or device, confirm that it is configured for the required port, and allow that traffic in the device firewall.
  3. Keep the target device’s LAN IP stable. Use the router’s address-reservation feature if available, or another method supported by your network.
  4. Create the forwarding rule. Select the target device, enter the external port and protocol, and enter the internal port if the router asks for one. The external and internal port numbers may be the same, but use the service’s configuration and router instructions rather than assuming they must match.
  5. Save the rule and test from outside your network. Use a phone with Wi-Fi turned off or another internet connection. Testing the public address while connected to the same Wi-Fi may fail if the router does not support NAT loopback.

Why port forwarding fails

What you observe Where to check Why it can happen
The rule is saved, but the connection times out Service status, port, protocol, and device firewall The router only routes matching traffic. The service may be stopped, listening on a different port, or blocked by the host firewall.
It works on the home network but not from the internet Router WAN address, any upstream router, and ISP network The router may not have a directly reachable public WAN address. Another NAT layer or carrier-grade NAT can prevent inbound traffic from reaching this router.
It stops working after the device reconnects Target device’s LAN IP address If the device received a different local address, the rule may still point to its old address.
A test from the same Wi-Fi fails NAT loopback support; test from an external connection Some routers do not let a local device reach a forwarded service by using the network’s public address. That failure alone does not establish whether the service is reachable from outside.
Two rules or devices compete for the same traffic Duplicate or overlapping rules and rule order On some NETGEAR interfaces, rules are evaluated in display order, so an earlier, broader match can capture traffic intended for a later rule. Check the behavior documented for your router.

Check whether your router has a public WAN address

Compare the WAN address shown in your router’s status page with the public IP address seen by an internet service. The router’s WAN address may be private or shared rather than directly reachable from the public internet. ASUS identifies these private IPv4 ranges: 10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255, and 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255. Its guidance identifies 100.64.0.0–100.127.255.255 as the shared address range used for carrier-grade NAT. See ASUS’s port-forwarding troubleshooting guidance and WAN IP and private-address guidance.

A private WAN address can indicate another router upstream. In that case, traffic may need to be forwarded through both routers, or the network may need a different configuration. If the WAN address is in the shared 100.64.0.0/10 range, ask your ISP whether it uses carrier-grade NAT and what options it offers for inbound connections. A private or shared WAN address means that changing the inner router’s rule may not make the service reachable from the public internet.

Test from the right network

Use a connection that is genuinely outside your home network—for example, a mobile device with Wi-Fi disabled. Google’s explanation of NAT loopback describes why a device on home Wi-Fi may not be able to test a forwarded service through the public WAN path. ASUS likewise recommends testing with an internet-connected computer that is not connected to the router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the external test fails, work from the destination outward: confirm the service is listening, check the device firewall, verify the rule’s destination and port settings, then inspect the WAN address and upstream network. This order helps distinguish a host problem from a router or ISP reachability problem.

Keep the rule limited and secure

Forward only the ports and protocols the service requires. Because forwarding creates an inbound path to the selected device, keep its operating system and service secured, and delete rules you no longer need. Do not substitute a DMZ setting as a quick fix: NETGEAR says its DMZ feature forwards all inbound traffic to a chosen LAN address and removes the router’s firewall protection for that device. A port-forwarding rule, by contrast, applies to the traffic specified by that rule.
