Wealth Management Technology: What It Changes, What It Doesn’t, and What to Check

Digital advice and AI can make wealth management more accessible and efficient, but their value depends on complete client information, secure data, sound oversight, and incentives aligned with investors.

Technology can make financial advice easier to access and help wealth-management firms handle routine work, but it does not guarantee better recommendations, higher returns, or lower fees. In the United States, digital advice, AI tools, and online engagement features can all influence how advice is delivered—and each comes with questions about client context, data, incentives, security, and oversight.

How is technology used in wealth management?

Digital wealth platforms can use information supplied by a client, along with the client’s risk preferences, to generate investment or financial advice. The service may be delivered through an online platform, supported by human advisers, or combined with adviser-led service; what a particular service covers and how much human help it offers vary.

AI is a separate, broader set of tools. Financial-services firms may use it for customer service, operational tasks, or other functions, while wealth-management firms can explore it to help serve clients and improve workflows. FINRA’s 2024 Annual Regulatory Oversight Report says firms were exploring or deploying generative AI both in-house and through third parties. These examples describe areas of use, not proof that every firm uses AI or that it improves advice.

Advice and client service

Algorithms can turn client information and stated risk preferences into digital investment or financial advice. A platform may also use digital tools to deliver information or respond to service requests. The exact advice scope, access to a human adviser, and service availability depend on the provider.

Operations and AI assistance

AI may assist with operational work or customer service, potentially freeing staff to focus on other tasks or helping a firm respond more efficiently. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) identifies efficiency, possible cost reductions, improved customer experience, and more affordable personalized investment advice as potential benefits of AI across financial services generally. Those are possibilities, not measured outcomes for the wealth-management sector.

What can technology improve—and what does it not establish?

Digital delivery may make advice more convenient to access and could reduce the cost of delivering some services. AI may help firms work more efficiently or provide faster customer service. These possible gains depend on how a firm designs, deploys, and oversees its tools.

  • Access: Digital platforms may reach people who would otherwise have less access to investment or financial advice.
  • Convenience: Online services can make some interactions available without arranging a conventional in-person meeting.
  • Workflow: Automation and AI may help firms handle operational tasks more efficiently.
  • Personalization: Digital systems can use client information and preferences to tailor advice, although the completeness and quality of that information matter.

The available official sources do not establish sector-wide savings, better investment performance, adoption rates, or that automation lowers costs for every client. A technology-enabled service should be judged by its actual scope, fees, and suitability for a person’s needs—not by claims that it is automated or AI-powered.

Where can digital advice miss the bigger picture?

A questionnaire and an algorithm can only work with the information available to them. GAO cautions that digital wealth-management platforms may not account for a consumer’s full finances and goals or ask clarifying questions in the way a traditional wealth manager might. This is a potential limitation, not a claim that every digital service has the same design or shortcoming.

For example, a recommendation based on a risk questionnaire may not reflect a change in income, a near-term need for cash, or financial priorities that the questionnaire did not ask about. A client’s circumstances can also change after initial onboarding. If information is incomplete, outdated, or entered incorrectly, a system may produce a response that appears precise without capturing the person’s full situation.

Before relying on a digital recommendation, consider whether the service asks about the circumstances that matter to you, how you can correct or update your information, and whether a person is available to help resolve ambiguity. If your needs or goals are complex, check whether the service can address them rather than assuming that a digital investment recommendation covers your broader financial life.

What risks should firms and clients consider?

Technology can introduce risks at several points: when client information is collected, when a model or algorithm processes it, when an output is used to guide a decision, and when a third-party provider handles data or software. Treasury’s 2024 report on AI in financial services highlights privacy, bias, and third-party-provider risks; GAO also points to data quality and cybersecurity concerns.

  • Incorrect or unsuitable outputs: A system may produce inaccurate information or an unsuitable recommendation, particularly when its inputs are incomplete or unreliable.
  • Privacy and security: Sensitive financial or personal information can be exposed through weak data practices, cybersecurity incidents, or third-party services.
  • Bias: AI systems may produce biased results, depending in part on the data and design used.
  • Vendor dependence: A firm that relies on an outside provider still needs to understand the risks and controls associated with that provider.
  • Intellectual property: FINRA identifies intellectual-property concerns among the issues firms should consider when using generative AI.
  • Accountability and oversight: A tool’s output does not remove a firm’s responsibilities for supervision, records, customer information, or applicable obligations.

For firms, model governance, vendor controls, and oversight are part of choosing and deploying a system—not matters to postpone until after launch. FINRA’s 2024 report identifies accuracy, privacy, bias, intellectual property, books and records, customer-information protection, cybersecurity, model-risk management, supervision, and vendor management among the issues relevant to AI use.

How can platform design shape investor behavior?

Features such as prompts, recommendations, and personalized marketing can affect what investors notice and how they interact with a platform. In an August 2021 statement, then-SEC Chair Gary Gensler discussed predictive analytics, differential marketing, and behavioral prompts used in robo-advising and wealth platforms. He raised policy concerns that features designed to increase revenue, data collection, or engagement could influence trading frequency, product selection, or investment strategy and create conflicts.

That statement is a dated discussion of policy questions, not itself a binding rule. For an investor, the practical issue is whether a feature appears designed to support an informed financial decision or primarily to encourage activity, data sharing, or a purchase. Ask how recommendations and prompts are generated, what the firm may earn from a product or action, and how it addresses potential conflicts.

What U.S. rules apply to digital advice and AI?

Using technology does not remove securities-related obligations. The details depend on the firm, the service it provides, and the rules that apply to it.

SEC internet-investment-adviser exemption

In March 2024, the SEC adopted amendments to the internet-investment-adviser exemption. An adviser relying on the amended exemption must maintain an operational interactive website through which it provides digital advisory services on an ongoing basis to more than one client, and must provide advice to all clients exclusively through that website. The SEC set March 31, 2025, as the compliance date, including for amending Form ADV; that deadline has passed.

This is a specific framework for advisers relying on that exemption. It is not a general requirement that every adviser use an online-only model.

Existing obligations and AI use

FINRA’s January 2024 report explains that AI use can implicate a range of existing obligations for member firms, including anti-money-laundering requirements, books and records, business continuity, public communications, customer-information protection, cybersecurity, model risk, research, Regulation Best Interest, supervision, and vendor management. Treasury recommends that financial firms review AI use cases for compliance before deployment and periodically reassess them.

Firms and people in regulated roles should verify which current requirements apply to their specific activities using authoritative regulator materials and qualified counsel. A general description of AI or internet-adviser rules cannot determine a particular firm’s obligations.

How can investors evaluate a digital wealth service?

Compare the service’s actual capabilities and controls rather than relying on a label such as “digital,” “automated,” or “AI-powered.” These questions draw on issues identified by GAO, FINRA, Treasury, and the SEC; they are an evaluation framework, not ratings of specific providers.

  • Scope and human help: What financial and investment needs does the service address? When can you speak with a qualified person, and how is help provided?
  • Client context: What information does the service collect about your finances and goals? How can you update it, and what happens when your circumstances change?
  • Fees: Are the fees and any other costs clearly explained before you sign up?
  • Recommendations and prompts: How are recommendations generated? What might influence product suggestions, notifications, or prompts?
  • Data handling: What personal and financial information is collected, who can access it, and how does the firm describe its privacy and cybersecurity practices?
  • Oversight: How does the firm test and monitor the tools it uses, manage outside providers, and address inaccurate or inappropriate outputs?
  • Conflicts and accountability: How does the firm identify and handle conflicts of interest, and whom can you contact if a recommendation or service response is wrong?

How can investors spot AI-related scams?

A joint investor alert from the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy, NASAA, and FINRA warns that scammers may use AI hype, fake investment platforms, guaranteed-return claims, synthetic audio or video, and impersonation. An AI label does not prove that an investment is legitimate, suitable, or supervised.

  1. Check registration. Independently verify the firm or professional through the relevant official regulator resources before investing.
  2. Verify communications separately. If a message or call appears to come from an adviser or firm, contact them through contact information you already know or have independently confirmed.
  3. Treat guaranteed returns as a warning sign. Be especially cautious when a pitch promises profits or uses AI claims to imply certainty.
  4. Do not rely on convincing audio or video alone. Synthetic media and impersonation can make a communication look or sound authentic.

What are the long-term opportunities—and what remains uncertain?

Technology could support wider access to advice, more personalized services, efficient operations, and responsive customer service. Those opportunities are not evidence that human advisers will inevitably be displaced, that investment outcomes will improve, or that the wealth-management industry will achieve a particular level of savings or adoption.

Long-term value depends on whether a service uses accurate and current client information, handles sensitive data securely, provides meaningful oversight, assigns clear accountability, and aligns its incentives with clients’ interests. Without those conditions, speed and convenience alone do not make financial advice dependable.
