Most Waze problems come down to one of four things: the phone’s GPS or location permission, sound settings, an internet connection, or map data. If Waze works on your phone but not on the car display, troubleshoot the car connection separately. The seven fixes below cover those distinctions for Android, iPhone, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Android Automotive.
1. Waze says “No GPS” or shows the wrong location
Start by checking whether Waze can access your location. Make sure location permission is enabled for Waze in your phone’s settings; the exact path and permission labels vary by device and operating-system version. Then restart the phone and reopen Waze.

If the warning remains, test the phone’s GPS outdoors with a GPS-status utility. Waze uses an outdoor reading of 0 m/0 ft or more than 35 m/115 ft as a sign that the phone’s GPS may not be working properly; its guidance is to contact the phone manufacturer. A reading below 35 m/115 ft indicates GPS is working by Waze’s troubleshooting rule. If Waze still reports an error in that case, contact Waze support. See Waze’s GPS troubleshooting steps.

Disconnect the phone from Android Auto or CarPlay, then open Waze directly on the phone. If the GPS warning appears there too, continue with phone-side troubleshooting. If Waze works on the phone and fails only on the car display, focus on the car system or report the display-specific problem to Waze. On Android Automotive, allow Waze to use the car’s location; the setting path depends on the vehicle.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
If other GPS apps also struggle, or the problem recurs, check whether the phone has a clear view of the sky and try restarting the phone. A windshield or dashboard mount can help position the phone, but it cannot repair a GPS or permission problem.
2. Waze directions or alerts are silent or play through the wrong speaker
Check Waze’s sound mode before changing other audio settings. In Waze, open Settings > Voice and sound and review the sound option. Depending on the app version, the choices include:
- Normal: spoken guidance and alerts.
- Less chatty: fewer spoken directions.
- Only alerts: alerts without spoken turn-by-turn guidance.
- Off: Waze sound is muted.
Raise Guidance volume in the same settings area. In Android Auto or CarPlay, sound preferences are set on the phone and apply in the car, while the car interface may also provide its own in-drive sound controls.
Check Bluetooth routing
If you want directions through a connected Bluetooth device, Waze’s Android guidance says Play sound to phone speaker should be off. If sound is still missing, check the phone’s volume and the car’s selected audio source. Waze also documents resetting the voice or voice cache as troubleshooting steps; menu labels can differ by platform. Follow the relevant steps in Waze’s sound and voice directions guide. If the issue continues, report it through Waze Help.
3. Waze cannot calculate a route or says “no network connection available”
Confirm that mobile data or Wi-Fi is available and actually working. Waze requires an active data connection to find and navigate a route. An intermittent connection can also make live traffic alerts and hazard reporting unreliable. Check your phone’s connection by loading another online service, then try Waze again. Waze explains its connection requirements in its internet and data guidance.

Weak cellular coverage or slow data can trigger network errors. The community-maintained Waze FAQ also suggests checking whether Avoid toll roads is enabled when route-server errors occur, since that preference can affect available routes in some areas. Treat this as a troubleshooting lead, not a universal cause. If the connection is strong and the error persists, restart the phone; reinstalling Waze is a later step if restarting does not help.
4. Waze sends you to the wrong place or shows an incorrect road
First identify what is wrong: the destination pin, your current position, or the road network used for the route. GPS determines the device’s position—the blue dot—but does not supply the map. Map information is maintained separately by map providers, as GPS.gov explains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the destination pin is misplaced
An incorrect address or place pin may come from a third-party place-data provider. The provider can vary by country and by the source of the search result, according to the community-maintained Waze FAQ. Report or correct the place data with the provider responsible for that listing; changing the road map will not necessarily fix a bad destination pin.
If the pin is right but the route uses the wrong road
The road itself may be missing or misdrawn in Waze’s map. Report the map problem to Waze so the road data can be reviewed. GPS.gov notes that map corrections may take weeks or months to be reviewed and issued, so a submitted correction may not appear immediately.
5. Waze works on your phone but fails on Android Auto or CarPlay
Reproduce the problem in Waze on the phone with the car connection disconnected. This check helps distinguish a phone-side Waze or GPS fault from a projection, console, or head-unit issue. If Waze fails on the phone too, use the relevant fix above. If it works on the phone but not in the car, describe it as a car-display-only issue when contacting Waze.

Waze specifically instructs users to disconnect Android Auto or CarPlay before using its in-app help workflow. The same phone-versus-display distinction is useful for Android Automotive, though the troubleshooting steps and settings for that built-in system vary by vehicle.

Waze depends on an active data connection to locate and navigate a route. Without internet, do not count on Waze for turn-by-turn navigation. If the connection drops in and out, live traffic and hazard information may be unreliable; Waze’s guidance does not promise that these reports will queue and upload later. Restore a usable connection and check the route again before relying on the app.
7. The first fixes did not work: contact Waze support
Send an issue report from Waze on the phone. The menu wording can vary by version, but Waze’s documented route is:
- Open Waze and tap Menu.
- Tap Help and feedback.
- Tap Report an issue.
- Choose the topic and subtopic, describe what happens, and include screenshots if available.
If the failure occurs only in the car, say so and identify whether you use Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or another in-car system. Waze’s issue-reporting instructions explain the in-app workflow.
Check that your device meets Waze’s stated requirements
Waze’s availability page currently lists iOS 16 or later and Android 10 or later, and says the device needs GPS and GSM/3G/4G/5G connectivity. Requirements can change; check Waze’s current availability information for the latest details.
