Delete or transfer unneeded files, review large apps and downloads, or use iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage if photos are the main issue. If iCloud storage is full, manage or upgrade that separately: buying more iCloud storage does not increase the device’s built-in capacity.
Is your device storage full, or is iCloud storage full?
These are separate limits. Device storage is the fixed capacity built into the iPhone or iPad; iCloud storage is cloud space used for things such as photos, files, and backups. An iCloud+ plan can add cloud capacity, but it cannot enlarge the device’s internal storage. Apple explains the difference between iCloud storage and device storage.

Settings labels can vary slightly by operating-system version and language. Follow the equivalent storage and iCloud labels if they differ on your device. If the warning concerns the device, start with its storage breakdown; if it concerns iCloud, focus on cloud usage.

What should you remove or transfer first?
Use the storage breakdown to target the largest avoidable items rather than deleting at random. Apple’s storage screen may show recommendations, and its photo-storage guidance includes reviewing suggested deletions, merging duplicates, and transferring photos or videos to a computer. Apple’s photo and video storage guidance covers these options.

How much space you recover depends on what you remove and what the device reports; there is no guaranteed amount. If you transfer photos to a Mac and use iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage, the originals may not be stored locally for direct import. Apple’s options include enabling iCloud Photos on the Mac or using AirDrop. See Apple’s guidance for photos or videos unavailable for import into Photos on Mac.
Can iCloud Photos make more room on the device?
Yes, it can reduce the local space used by a photo library, but it is not an internal-capacity upgrade. By default, photos and videos are stored on the device in their original high-resolution form. With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud and smaller, space-saving versions are kept on the device as needed. To access an original that is not on the device, you need it in iCloud and a connection that lets the device download it. Apple’s iCloud Photos setup guide describes the feature.

Look under Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos for the relevant photo-sync and optimization settings; exact labels may vary by system version. Your iCloud account needs enough available space for the library. Deleting a photo while iCloud Photos is syncing can delete it from the synced library too, so do not treat the feature as a separate archival backup. If you need an independent copy, transfer files to a computer or compatible external storage.

When does an external drive make sense?
A compatible USB drive or SD card reader can help you transfer, archive, or access files without relying on cloud space. It does not expand internal storage, and you should not assume apps can be installed or run from it. Apple documents external-storage access through Files and supported apps for iPhone and iPad.

Check compatibility before connecting
- Connector: Confirm whether the device and drive use compatible connectors; an adapter or card reader may be needed. Apple provides information about connecting accessories to an iPad’s USB-C port.
- Format: Apple lists APFS, encrypted APFS, Mac OS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, and FAT as supported formats, with a single data partition.
- Power: Some external hard drives need their own power. Depending on the device and drive, a powered hub or an Apple camera adapter with USB power may be required.
- Access: Unlock the device before connecting a storage accessory, then use Files or another app that supports the files you want to handle.
Choose a drive or adapter only after checking your specific iPhone or iPad port, software support, file format, and power requirements. Compatibility is not universal.

Which option fits your storage problem?
| Option | Helps with | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Delete or transfer local content | Full device storage | Choose files you no longer need or preserve elsewhere; recovered space varies. |
| iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage | Local space used by a photo library | Requires enough iCloud capacity; accessing originals depends on their availability in iCloud and a connection to download them. |
| Compatible external drive or computer | Keeping or accessing transferred files outside the device | Requires a compatible connection and, for drives, suitable format and possibly power. It does not expand internal capacity. |
| iCloud+ upgrade | Full iCloud storage | Adds cloud capacity, not device storage; plan details vary by market. |
How can you avoid another storage warning?
- Check the device and iCloud storage screens separately so you address the limit that is actually full.
- Review large apps, downloads, and photo or video files before removing anything.
- If you use iCloud Photos, make sure the chosen settings and available iCloud capacity suit how you access originals.
- Keep another copy of important files when you need an archive; syncing and optimizing a photo library is not the same as maintaining a separate backup.
