Way of the Hunter multiplayer at a glance
Nine Rocks Games’ 2022 launch FAQ is the source for the original game’s platform capacities and cross-platform policy. Steam and the Xbox storefront provide the platform-specific requirements. Because the party figures were published for launch, treat them as the developer-documented limits for the original release rather than assuming that a later sequel or a different edition uses the same rules.

The practical answer is therefore simple: decide which ecosystem everyone will use before buying or inviting anyone. A four-person PC group cannot add a friend playing on PS5, and a console group cannot expand by adding a PC player.

What multiplayer includes in the original game
Multiplayer is online co-op rather than a shared cross-platform pool. Everyone joins the same hosted session and hunts together in one of the game’s open regions. The developer described two handcrafted locations, each covering 55 square miles (144 square kilometers), in its official FAQ. That scale matters in co-op: players can spread out, use location pings to coordinate and regroup without treating the game like a small arena map.
The game has no official cross-play bridge between PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A friend-list invitation from another ecosystem cannot turn into a compatible session; the platform restriction is a game-level rule, not merely a missing menu option. If your group owns different versions, select one supported ecosystem and have every participant use that version.
Party-size limits by platform
PC: the largest documented group
The Nine Rocks Games launch FAQ promises room for four people on PC. Steam lists online co-op and full controller support, so a PC group can use mouse and keyboard or a compatible gamepad. The capacity is a maximum, not a requirement: a solo player or a smaller group can still use the multiplayer features where appropriate.
For a PC group, the limiting factors are normally Steam ownership or access, the Windows installation meeting the minimum specifications and a working internet connection. The cited sources do not document a separate per-player subscription charge for Steam multiplayer.
PlayStation 5: console co-op with a smaller cap
The developer’s launch FAQ documents PlayStation 5 co-op for three people and confirms that boxed PS5 editions were available. All participants must use the PlayStation ecosystem because the original game has no cross-platform multiplayer.

The sources used for this guide do not state a current PlayStation Plus or other online-service requirement. Check the current PlayStation store and account prompts for your region before purchasing an online-service plan; do not assume that an Xbox rule or a PC rule applies to PS5.
Xbox Series X|S: two-player co-op and a console online plan
The Xbox listing and the developer’s FAQ both identify the Series X|S version as a two-player online co-op experience. The Xbox storefront says console online multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, sold separately. That subscription requirement is separate from owning or accessing the game.
The Xbox listing also marks the game as optimized for Xbox Series X|S and available through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Cloud access does not remove the purchase requirement stated by the listing. Confirm that each participant’s account has the necessary game access and online entitlement before attempting to join.
Does Way of the Hunter support crossplay?
No. The developer’s official FAQ says the original game will not support cross-platform multiplayer. PC, PS5 and Xbox players therefore need to form parties inside the same platform family.
This affects planning in several ways:
- A PC host can invite PC friends, but a PS5 or Xbox friend will not be eligible to join that session.
- A PS5 session must stay within PlayStation 5, and an Xbox Series X|S session must stay within Xbox Series X|S.
- Changing the host does not bypass the restriction; the invited player and the host still need compatible platform versions.
- Do not use information about Way of the Hunter 2 to infer a change. The sequel has its own version-specific multiplayer policy.
What each player needs before joining
PC minimum requirements

These are minimum listed requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate or visual preset. Leave additional free space for updates and normal operating-system use. Steam also lists full controller support and Xbox-controller support; a controller is optional rather than required.
PlayStation 5 preparation
Use the PS5 edition and make sure every participant is signed into the PlayStation account that owns or can launch it. The cited material confirms the console edition and its co-op capacity but does not provide a current subscription statement for online play. Platform account, network and store rules can vary by region, so verify those prompts on the console you will use.
Xbox Series X|S preparation
Use the Series X|S version and confirm an eligible Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate plan for console online multiplayer. The storefront says that the game is also available through Xbox Cloud Gaming, but the game purchase is still required. Check that the installed or streamed version is the same game and that every account can launch it before sending invitations.
One compatible ecosystem for the whole group
Everyone needs access to the same platform version. Buying the game on one ecosystem does not grant a license on another, and cross-platform multiplayer is not available. If a friend owns both a console and a PC copy, agree on which version the group will use before creating the session.
How to host a multiplayer session
The available official material confirms multiplayer, a server browser and later interface improvements, but it does not publish a verified, platform-by-platform click sequence for creating a lobby and sending every type of invitation. Menu labels can change with patches and differ between PC, PS5 and Xbox. Use the following as practical guidance, then follow the labels shown by your current build.

- Update the game and platform software. Install the current game update and sign into the platform account that owns or can launch the game.
- Open the multiplayer flow. From the main menu, choose the multiplayer or server-browser option shown by your version. If the game presents a host, create-session or similar choice, select it rather than browsing for an existing room.
- Choose the location and session settings. Select the map and any available difficulty or visibility settings. The current server browser can display map details and difficulty levels, which helps friends identify the right room.
- Start the session. Confirm the room or server and wait for the game to create it. Keep the session on the same platform ecosystem as the people you intend to invite.
- Invite through the platform controls. Use the friend-list, join-game or session-invite control provided by Steam, PlayStation or Xbox when it is available. The exact label and location can vary by platform and game version.
- Have friends join from the notification or browser. A friend can accept the platform invitation or locate the room through the in-game browser if the session is visible. Check the displayed map and difficulty before joining the wrong room.
- Coordinate once everyone is present. Use the game’s location-ping tools and voice or platform chat to agree on a meeting point before splitting up.
This sequence is guidance, not a quoted official procedure. If your menus do not match an older walkthrough, trust the current in-game labels and platform overlay rather than following screenshots from a different build.
Hosting and invite changes that affect troubleshooting
A March 12, 2025 update from Nine Rocks Games added or improved several multiplayer-facing features: location pinging, join-and-leave notifications and a server browser that shows map details and difficulty levels. These changes make it easier to identify a session and notice when a friend has connected or departed, but they do not create cross-play or increase the documented platform caps.
Because the update changed the interface, an old guide may describe buttons that have moved or use different names. Look for the server-browser and multiplayer controls in the current build, and check whether the host’s room is visible before repeatedly sending invitations.

The friend cannot see or accept the invitation
- Confirm that both players are using the same platform ecosystem and the original game, not the sequel.
- Check that the host has actually created a multiplayer session rather than remaining in a single-player menu.
- Ask the friend to open the platform overlay or the game’s server browser directly; an invitation notification may not place the player in the room automatically.
- Verify that both copies are updated. A version mismatch can prevent a session from appearing even when the accounts are otherwise compatible.
The room is full
Compare the number of people already connected with the platform’s documented maximum in the table above. A full room cannot be expanded by changing the host or by inviting from another ecosystem. Remove an inactive participant, close the session and recreate it, or move the group to a platform that supports the required party size.
The Xbox player is blocked at the online step
Check the Xbox account’s Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate entitlement and confirm that the game itself is purchased or otherwise available to that account. The Xbox storefront explicitly treats online console multiplayer and game access as requirements; cloud availability does not remove the purchase condition.

The map or difficulty does not match
Use the server browser’s map and difficulty details before joining. The March 2025 improvements were intended to make those details visible, reducing accidental joins to the wrong session. If the browser still shows stale information, leave the room, have the host recreate it and search again.
Physical and digital editions
The developer’s 2022 FAQ confirms boxed copies for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, so searching for a physical Way of the Hunter PS5 or Way of the Hunter Xbox Series X|S edition is a legitimate product format. Availability, seller, region and edition can change, so verify those details at the time of purchase.
PC players are directed to the Steam version in the cited requirements. A compatible PC or Xbox controller is a convenience option because Steam lists controller support; it is not a prerequisite for multiplayer.

Do not mix these rules with Way of the Hunter 2
Nine Rocks Games’ September 2026 FAQ for Way of the Hunter 2 describes a current two-player free-play co-op mode and no cross-play in version 1.0. Those are sequel facts, not an update to the original game’s launch-era capacities. Likewise, an October 2026 sequel patch fixed a softlock that could occur when accepting an invitation in a fresh game. That fix demonstrates that invite behavior can be version-sensitive, but it does not document the original game’s menus or change its platform policy.
Bottom line for a group planning to play
Choose one ecosystem first, then check the party cap and access requirements for that platform. PC has the largest documented co-op capacity; PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have smaller caps, with Xbox also requiring an eligible console online plan. Use the current multiplayer or server-browser interface to create or find the session, send invitations through the platform controls and rely on the updated map, difficulty and join-status information to confirm that everyone entered the intended room.
