Ubisoft has not announced a Watch Dogs reboot, a new numbered sequel, or an approved remake. The strongest current clue is narrower: CEO Yves Guillemot reportedly called the franchise important to Ubisoft’s future and said the original could potentially be remade. That leaves room for a reset as an argument about what the series needs—not a confirmed Ubisoft plan.
What Ubisoft has—and has not—said about Watch Dogs
At Ubisoft’s annual meeting, CEO Yves Guillemot described Watch Dogs as “still a brand that we consider to be an important brand for the future,” according to GamesRadar’s October 6, 2026 report. The same report quotes him referring to the original game as potentially being remade “before it’s potentially remade.” The wording is conditional: it does not establish that a remake has been approved, assigned to a studio, or scheduled.

GamesRadar reported no Watch Dogs 4 announcement at the time. That is not evidence that a sequel has been cancelled or will never be made. Ubisoft’s published schedule for the first quarter of fiscal 2026–27 also lists no Watch Dogs release, but it covers only that quarter—not the company’s entire future slate. The available evidence therefore supports neither “Watch Dogs 4 is coming” nor “Watch Dogs is finished.”
Ubisoft’s franchise page dates the series to 2014, identifies Watch Dogs: Legion as its third entry, and says the original game drew more than 40 million players worldwide. That is Ubisoft’s player figure, not a sales total.

What a “complete reset” could mean
A reset need not erase every idea or connection from earlier games. It could simply give the series a clearer starting point and a renewed reason to exist. Possible choices—not reported features or leaks—might include:
- A new protagonist: build the story around a character whose personal stakes introduce the world and its surveillance systems to newcomers.
- A new setting: use a city and political context that make hacking, privacy, and control feel specific rather than interchangeable.
- A sharper tone: decide whether the series is primarily a grounded techno-thriller, a character-led crime story, or something else, then make its missions and writing support that choice.
- A refreshed hacking premise: make digital intrusion central to problem-solving and consequences, rather than treating it as only another tool in an open-world checklist.
Those are creative possibilities, not confirmation that Ubisoft intends to reboot the franchise. A remake of the first game, the possibility mentioned in Guillemot’s reported comments, is also distinct from a franchise-wide reset: it would revisit an existing story rather than necessarily redefine the series.

Would a remake or a new sequel make more sense?
The two routes solve different problems. The remake is the only one mentioned conditionally in the reported CEO remarks; no new numbered sequel was announced in the cited reporting. Neither path has been confirmed as Ubisoft’s choice.

| Path | Continuity | Entry point | Creative scope | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remake of the original | Revisits the first game’s story. | Could offer an updated way to start with the series, depending on how it is made. | Bound by the original’s premise, though a remake could revise its presentation or systems. | Guillemot reportedly referred to the original as potentially being remade; no approval or release timing is established. |
| New numbered sequel | Would extend the series rather than revisit its first story. | Could continue existing continuity, or introduce a new audience depending on its design. | Could take the series in a new direction without being a remake. | No Watch Dogs 4 announcement appears in the cited October 2026 report. |
A remake could help if Ubisoft sees value in returning to the game that introduced the series, while a sequel could demonstrate what the franchise can become next. A “complete reset” might be most useful as a design goal—make the premise and point of view compelling again—rather than as a requirement to discard all continuity. Whether that would work depends on execution, which no announcement or evidence here can establish.

Why a reset could be the right creative choice
After three entries, a new game would benefit from a strong answer to a basic question: what does Watch Dogs offer that another open-world action game does not? A reset could make the answer legible from the opening hours. That means giving hacking a meaningful role in how players investigate, move through the world, and affect people—not just adding more devices or targets.
It could also make the series easier to enter. A newcomer should not need to know the history of every previous protagonist to understand the central conflict. At the same time, a reset should preserve what makes the franchise recognizable: technology as a source of power, vulnerability, and social consequence. New characters and settings can refresh the formula without reducing the series to a generic crime story.

Those are reasons a reset might help, not evidence that Ubisoft has chosen one. Guillemot’s 2024 discussion of Ubisoft’s wider focus on action-adventure open-world games and remakes concerned the company’s broader portfolio and Assassin’s Creed; it does not confirm a Watch Dogs project. The Ubisoft interview is useful as background on the company, not as a roadmap for this franchise.

For now, the responsible expectation is uncertainty. Watch Dogs remains a brand Ubisoft reportedly considers important, and a remake of the original has been discussed as a possibility. The evidence does not establish whether a remake or sequel is in development, cancelled, or permanently shelved. Until Ubisoft makes a formal announcement, “complete reset” is a case for what the series could use—not a description of what is underway.

Players curious about the series can start with the original or another earlier entry; Ubisoft identifies the 2014 game as the first in the franchise, and GamesRadar’s report points readers toward replaying earlier titles. A replay is a way to revisit the series, not a signal about what Ubisoft will announce next.
