In a July 2026 interview, the original Gears of War creator reflected on why Boss Key Productions and LawBreakers struggled, and said his next creative interests lean toward cooperative PvE rather than another PvP project. He is not involved in Gears of War: E-Day, according to GameSpot.
Is Cliff Bleszinski returning to game development?
He says the urge to make games is returning, but the July 17, 2026 interview with Brian Crecente at 80 Level does not announce a new project or provide a development timeline. Bleszinski had already re-entered the creative process by consulting on the asymmetric horror game Soul Walker; that is distinct from announcing a game of his own.

He describes himself as more interested in player-versus-environment (PvE) and cooperative play than in making another player-versus-player (PvP) game. He points to Gears of War 2’s Horde mode and the straightforward pleasure of playing and shooting alongside friends. PC Gamer’s July 19 summary also highlights that preference, quoting his view that players want to get online with friends and play without needless complications: PC Gamer.

He added: “I want to make stuff that people will cosplay as and get tattooed on their bodies.”

What did Bleszinski say about Gears of War: E-Day?
The 80 Level interview is principally about Bleszinski’s career, Boss Key and what he might want to make next; its available account does not establish a specific opinion or quotation from him about E-Day. GameSpot reported that he has no involvement in Gears of War: E-Day, so his status as the franchise’s original creator and lead designer should not be mistaken for a current development role. See GameSpot’s report.
What went wrong with Boss Key and LawBreakers?
Bleszinski’s explanation is a self-critical retrospective, not an independent postmortem. He describes the studio’s problems as a series of connected decisions rather than one decisive mistake. The factors below are his interpretation of the experience, not a proven ranking of causes.
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Founder identity and leadership
Boss Key began with a team of 15 to 20 people and eventually grew to about 75, according to Bleszinski’s account in the 80 Level interview. He says he wanted the studio to be identified as his own, and now sees that instinct as ego. “I wanted it to be my studio; that was my ego creeping in,” he said. He also believed his personal name would create loyalty, but concluded that audiences tend to attach themselves to games rather than to the person who made them: “I thought there was this brand loyalty from the people who knew who I was, but it turns out people are loyal to the game, but they’re not necessarily loyal to the person.”
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →His broader lesson is that a studio cannot rely on its founder’s profile as a substitute for a compelling identity, and that leadership needs colleagues who can challenge the founder.
Rank #3
- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.
Publisher incentives and support
Bleszinski also reflects on the publishing arrangement with Nexon and the incentives around it. His point is about balance: “When the deal is so good for one side, the other side isn’t as incentivized.” He presents the deal and the support it encouraged as part of a wider set of conditions, rather than as the sole explanation for the outcome.
Product direction, launch and audience fit
He discusses decisions about LawBreakers’ direction and launch, the console platform the studio chose, and how that choice affected access to existing audiences. In his view, product identity and how a game is presented at launch matter alongside the game itself; a platform decision can shape who is likely to find and play it.
Rank #4
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Population and matchmaking
For an online multiplayer game, a shrinking audience can make matchmaking less healthy, which in turn can make it harder to retain players. Bleszinski treats that dynamic as another part of the studio’s difficulties, not a standalone verdict on the game or a complete explanation of its commercial performance.
His personal accountability
The interview also addresses Bleszinski’s own conduct and engagement as a leader. He ties the studio’s outcome to accumulated mistakes, including his own, rather than attributing it solely to a publisher, platform or audience.
Best Value
- 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
- Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
- Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
- Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles
Is Hollow Point the game he is planning?
There is no basis in the July interview to identify Hollow Point as Bleszinski’s next project. GameSpot reported separately on May 11, 2026, that he had outlined the concept online: a two-player horror-action idea involving an ex-Marine and a young woman with psychic abilities. That report said there was no certainty the game would be made. It should be treated as a concept he described, not a confirmed production or a commitment made in the later interview: GameSpot’s coverage of Hollow Point and E-Day.
What his comments suggest about his next creative direction
Bleszinski’s stated preference for PvE and cooperative play is a direction he finds appealing, not a genre announcement. His reference to Horde mode reflects the kind of social play he enjoys: getting together online with friends and playing without a complicated pitch. He also emphasizes building characters and worlds that inspire strong attachment. Until he shares a specific game, those preferences are the clearest indication of what he might want to create—not confirmation of what he will make.
