Kojima Productions said in a statement dated September 20, 2026, that PHYSINT is moving forward with Xbox and that its relationship with PlayStation remains strong. The studio also described itself as healthy and profitable while pushing back against reports and online speculation about the project, the Death Stranding franchise and its plans. Those are the studio’s assurances, not independently verified financial or production findings.
What did Kojima Productions say?
Kojima Productions said it usually avoids responding to online speculation, but chose to address discussion it said was reaching fans, creative partners and colleagues. In the English translation reproduced by Inven Global, the studio said: “None of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source.” It asked readers to view the claims skeptically.

The statement’s main points were that the studio considered itself healthy and profitable, PHYSINT was proceeding with Xbox, and its relationship with PlayStation remained strong. The Washington Post reproduced part of the reassurance, with an omission marked by an ellipsis: “While we recognize the article may have caused alarm, we want to reassure you all … that the studio is in a healthy, profitable state, development for ‘Physint’ continues to move forward with Xbox and our relationship with PlayStation remains strong.”

The statement addressed reporting and speculation about the PlayStation relationship, Death Stranding’s commercial performance, and PHYSINT’s production plans and investment. It did not publish financial figures, sales data or a detailed account of the project’s publishing change.

Is Kojima still working with PlayStation?
Kojima Productions says its relationship with PlayStation remains strong. That statement is compatible with PHYSINT moving forward with Xbox: the studio described an ongoing relationship with PlayStation while naming Xbox as PHYSINT’s new publishing partner. The statement does not say that the studio’s relationship with PlayStation has ended.
PHYSINT was initially announced as a collaboration between PlayStation and Kojima Productions. The Washington Post reported that Hideo Kojima said Sony told the studio in mid-June 2026 that it would stop funding the project, and that Sony gave him no reason. Kojima Productions subsequently found Xbox as a new publisher. The studio’s September statement did not explain why the publishing arrangement changed.

Why did PHYSINT’s publishing arrangement change?
No definitive official reason is established in the cited accounts. The Washington Post and GamesRadar+ covered the change and discussion around it, but reported explanations involving budget, schedule or exclusivity should be treated as theories or attributed reporting—not confirmed reasons from Sony or Kojima Productions.
Kojima Productions said the claims under discussion were not from official or on-the-record sources. Neither Sony nor the studio provided a specific official explanation for the change in the cited reporting. Accordingly, it is not established whether any particular business consideration caused Sony to stop funding PHYSINT.

What is known about PHYSINT’s development?
In an interview reported by The Washington Post, Kojima said PHYSINT had a written plot and concept, including storyboards. He also said the studio had started creating 3D models and scanning actors, and was experimenting with game engines without having made a final engine choice.
Those are interview details, not confirmation of a release date, launch window, final platform list or completed production milestones. The September statement did not announce any of those details.
