A Snapchat augmented-reality lens demonstrated in 2021 could make a person’s visible skin appear as exposed bones. Futurism identified augmented-reality developer Kavin Kumar as the creator and reported that the effect tracked the head and neck, then reacted when the person lifted a shirt to reveal more skin.
What the Snapchat skeleton filter did
The lens transformed skin visible through Snapchat’s camera into a skeletal overlay. In the demonstration described by Futurism, the effect covered the person’s head and neck and extended to the torso when the subject raised their shirt.

The report characterized this behavior as “skin segmentation”: the lens appeared to distinguish exposed skin from other parts of the image and apply the bone imagery to those areas. That description does not establish which computer-vision model, training data, tracking system, phone hardware or accuracy level the creator used.
Who made the AR skeleton lens?
Kavin Kumar, described by Futurism as an augmented-reality developer, was named as the creator. The demonstration was highlighted by Tony Hồ Trần in a tweet reproduced in the report on September 16, 2021: “Redditor u/AR_MR_XR posts a very impressive Snapchat AR filter from creator and developer Kavin Kumar. Notice how the program knows to turn this person’s body into a skeleton when they lift up their shirt.”

How the demonstration worked
- Face and neck tracking: The effect rendered the subject’s head and neck as bones.
- Visible-skin response: When the subject lifted their shirt, the effect recognized the newly exposed area and extended the skeletal appearance to the body.
- Live AR rendering: The result appeared through Snapchat’s camera as an interactive lens rather than as a pre-edited image.
Those are the behaviors reported by Futurism; the article did not publish a benchmark, measured latency, supported-device list or technical explanation of how the tracking was implemented.
Can you still get the Snapchat skeleton lens?
Futurism linked to a Snapchat unlock code in its September 16, 2021 report. Current access was not verified, so the lens may no longer be published, searchable or compatible with today’s Snapchat app. Treat any old code or repost as historical information rather than a guarantee that the effect will open.
