Spotify Caught Doing Something Unbelievably Ghoulish With AI

Spotify removed an unrelated AI-generated song from deceased singer-songwriter Blaze Foley’s profile. The case exposes how synthetic music can impersonate artists and confuse listeners.

Spotify briefly hosted an unrelated, apparently AI-generated song on the profile of dead singer-songwriter Blaze Foley. The track, “Together,” appeared under Foley’s established artist page even though Foley died in 1989 and the label managing his catalog had not authorized it. Spotify removed the upload after the catalog representative objected.

The incident was reported by Futurism on July 24, 2025. It does not show that Spotify created the song; the reported failure involved an uploader or distributor placing deceptive material on a real artist profile.

What Spotify’s Blaze Foley incident involved

“Together” was listed on Blaze Foley’s Spotify page with an AI-generated cover image. Craig McDonald, owner of the label managing Foley’s catalog, said: “I can clearly tell you that this song is not Blaze, not anywhere near Blaze’s style, at all.” He described it as “an AI schlock bot, if you will.” Spotify subsequently removed the track.

The report also identified the uploader credit “Syntax Error” and described similar AI tracks appearing on other artists’ pages, including Guy Clark’s. Those details describe reported uploads, not proof that Spotify generated the recordings or that every similarly attributed track came from the same person.

Why putting synthetic music on a dead artist’s page is different from ordinary AI music

An artist can authorize an AI-assisted recording, license a vocal model, or release a clearly labeled tribute. Foley could do none of those things: he was killed in 1989. Placing a new synthetic vocal and image inside his official-looking catalog creates a false connection between the deceased musician and a work he never approved.

  • Identity: listeners may reasonably assume a song on Foley’s established profile was made or endorsed by Foley.
  • Consent: no living artist, estate, or catalog representative can provide Foley’s personal approval.
  • Catalog integrity: an unrelated upload can be mistaken for a newly discovered recording, harming the historical record and confusing royalty or rights reporting.
  • Platform trust: profile pages are supposed to identify who made a work, not merely where a distributor managed to place it.

Spotify’s stated policy and enforcement

Spotify said the upload violated its deceptive-content policy. That policy prohibits impersonation intended to mislead, including deceptively replicating another creator’s name, image, or description or posing as a person, brand, or organization.

The company said it can act against licensors and distributors that fail to police fraud, including permanently removing repeat or egregious violators. In a September 25, 2025 policy announcement, Spotify said it had removed more than 75 million spammy tracks during the preceding 12 months. That is a company-reported enforcement figure, not an independently audited count.

Spotify’s policy states: “Vocal impersonation is only allowed in music on Spotify when the impersonated artist has authorized the usage.” The wording covers unauthorized voice cloning, but it does not mean every AI-assisted song is forbidden. Spotify describes AI use as a spectrum that can include vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, or post-production.

How Spotify now distinguishes AI identity from AI production

Two controls address different questions and should not be confused:

Spotify feature What it is meant to indicate What it cannot prove
AI Persona badge Spotify’s assessment that a public artist identity appears AI-generated. The company announced a mid-September 2026 rollout and said it may apply labels after review rather than relying only on self-disclosure. It does not identify every track containing an AI vocal, lyric, instrument, or production element.
AI Credits Disclosures from an artist, label, or distributor about AI contributions to a particular song. A missing credit does not prove that a recording used no AI.

Spotify says AI Persona profiles will, by default, be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener follows them. Because the policy was announced for the 2026 rollout, the exact implementation and availability can change.

What listeners can check when a profile seems synthetic

  1. Inspect the artist page. Look for an AI Persona badge or other identity information, and compare the page with the artist’s known catalog, biography, label history, and release dates.
  2. Open the song’s credits. AI Credits may disclose generated vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, or post-production. Treat the information as disclosure supplied by the artist, label, or distributor, not as a guarantee that undisclosed AI was absent.
  3. Check context, not just sound. A new song on a dead artist’s page, a sudden flood of releases, generic artwork, or an unfamiliar songwriter and uploader credit are reasons to question attribution.
  4. Report a deceptive listing. Use Spotify’s reporting route for the track or profile and, where relevant, contact the artist’s estate, label, or catalog representative. Rights holders can provide evidence that a release is unauthorized.

Audio alone is not a reliable authentication method. Human listeners and automated detectors can miss synthetic vocals, while legitimate artists may use AI tools without replacing their identity.

Why AI music can still appear in recommendations

Spotify’s default exclusion applies to profiles labeled as AI Personas; it is not a universal promise that no AI-assisted track will enter a playlist or recommendation. AI Credits depend on disclosure, and Spotify’s systems may not yet have enough information to identify every synthetic contribution. A track can therefore be AI-assisted, undisclosed, or misattributed without carrying an obvious warning.

Spam tactics also exploit recommendation systems through mass uploads and artificial engagement. Spotify announced a new spam filter aimed at mass-upload and recommendation-abuse behavior, alongside stronger enforcement against unauthorized AI voice clones. These measures target distribution and manipulation problems as well as the underlying recordings.

What the case says about responsibility

Distributors and licensors are the first gatekeepers for the files and metadata they submit. Spotify controls the profile, search, recommendation, and takedown systems that determine how those submissions are presented to listeners. A policy can prohibit impersonation, but effective protection also requires profile verification, rapid rights-holder appeals, accurate metadata, and visible disclosures.

Spotify says its broader transparency package includes Verified by Spotify, AI Credits, SongDNA, Artist Details, and Artist Profile Protection. The company reports that hundreds of thousands of profiles are verified, representing more than 99% of artists listeners actively search, and that tens of thousands of AI credits are submitted daily. Those figures are Spotify’s own claims and do not establish that every artist or release is protected.

The practical bottom line for listeners and artists

  • A song on an artist’s official-looking page is not, by itself, proof that the artist made or approved it.
  • The Foley upload was reported as an unrelated AI-generated track, was challenged by the catalog representative, and was removed.
  • Spotify says unauthorized vocal impersonation is prohibited, but AI disclosure remains dependent on information supplied by rights holders and distributors.
  • An AI Persona badge concerns the apparent identity behind a profile; an AI Credit concerns disclosed AI use in a recording.
  • If a deceased artist suddenly receives unfamiliar music, treat the listing as potentially deceptive and report it rather than assuming it is a lost archive recording.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Blaze Foley’s “Together” an authentic lost recording?

No. The catalog representative quoted in the July 24, 2025 report said it was not Foley and had not been authorized by the label managing his catalog. Spotify removed the track.

Does Spotify’s lack of an AI Credit mean a song was made entirely by humans?

No. Spotify says credits depend on disclosure by the artist, label, or distributor, so an absent credit cannot establish that no AI was used.

Are all AI-generated artist profiles blocked from recommendations?

Spotify announced that profiles labeled AI Personas would be excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener follows them. The policy applies to labeled identities, not necessarily every song containing undisclosed or limited AI assistance.

The Bottom Line

Spotify did not merely host an AI song; according to the reported Foley case, it allowed an unrelated synthetic release to appear where listeners expected a dead musician’s authentic work. The removal and newer safeguards address the problem, but profile attribution, disclosure, and rights-holder enforcement remain essential.
