A 2016 Meta demonstration showed an engineer designing in 3D while Spotify, email and other apps occupied several augmented-reality screens. He said the setup replaced four desktop monitors. That was a company demonstration, not a controlled productivity test or proof that the same glasses are still sold. Today, head-worn displays can expand a laptop or mobile workspace, but available studies and hands-on reports do not show them outperforming a well-designed physical multi-monitor desk for sustained work.
What the four-monitor replacement story actually showed
Futurism reported on March 1, 2016, that a Meta engineer used AR glasses to arrange multiple virtual screens around a 3D design workflow while listening to Spotify and checking email. The engineer described the glasses as replacing four monitors. The article also attributed optimistic comments to Meta CEO Meron Gribetz, including that the glasses already had the resolution and components needed to begin replacing monitors.

What “virtual display” means
Optical glasses or headsets
In this article, virtual screens are computer images seen through AR or display glasses. Software places windows at apparently fixed positions in the room, so several screens can travel with a laptop or phone. The glasses still need a compatible computer, connection method and software environment.

Software-created remote screens
“Virtual display” can also mean a software-created monitor for a remote computer, such as the displays documented by Jump Desktop. That approach can provide another desktop surface without a physical monitor attached to the host, but it is not the optical, head-worn setup in the 2016 demonstration.
What controlled productivity studies found
HoloLens 2 evaluation (2021)
Pavanatto, North, Bowman, Stoakley and Badea compared physical, virtual and hybrid monitor arrangements with a Microsoft HoloLens 2 prototype and productivity tasks. Participants completed the work in every condition. Virtual-only work took somewhat longer than physical work and required more head movement under the tested conditions.

The authors found the hybrid arrangement more promising than replacing every physical monitor with a virtual one. This result applies to that prototype, task set and study period; it is not a claim about every current pair of glasses.

A later peer-reviewed study compared a physical workstation, a laptop with virtual desktops and a custom head-worn setup showing three virtual monitors. Participants rated the virtual setup faster, easier and more intuitive than the laptop condition, while the physical workstation produced the highest overall user experience.

The comparison used three 24-inch physical monitors at 1920 × 1080, positioned 70 cm from participants, and three 28.8-inch virtual monitors at 1920 × 1080. The head-worn hardware was a custom research prototype that was not commercially available, so its results cannot be treated as a product review.
Where virtual screens help most
- Portable workspace: A laptop can gain several apparent windows without carrying multiple panels.
- Small or temporary desks: Travelers, students and workers in shared spaces avoid transporting or installing a monitor array.
- Single-screen limits: The cited studies indicate a meaningful advantage over working only on a laptop display, even though physical multi-monitor work remained the strongest overall experience.
- Privacy and flexible placement: Screens visible only to the wearer can be useful in public or space-constrained settings, subject to the device’s optics and software.
What still makes physical monitors better
- Comfort over long sessions: Head-worn weight, pressure, eye focus and heat can accumulate.
- Text clarity: Small code, dense spreadsheets and fine interface elements depend on the glasses’ optics, rendering and fit; a product’s entertainment image quality does not guarantee monitor-like readability.
- Attention and head movement: Virtual windows may require more head movement than a carefully arranged desk, as the 2021 study observed.
- Interaction with the desk: Looking down to write, use a phone, handle documents or reach peripherals can be awkward while wearing glasses.
- Hardware and software dependence: Screen count, independent placement and compatibility vary by computer, operating system, connection and companion software.
Comfort is a product-specific decision
In a September 1, 2026 Tom’s Guide hands-on account, Scott Younker used RayNeo Air 4 Pro and VITURE Pro 2 display glasses for a week, with XREAL glasses used briefly for comparison. He reported that extended wear became tiring and that switching to desk activities such as writing in a notebook was awkward. Those are one reviewer’s observations, not a clinical finding or a universal experience, but they illustrate why a short demonstration cannot answer an all-day-work question.

Should you replace your monitors?
| Work situation | Most defensible choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Travel or shared workspace | Virtual displays | Portability can outweigh lower comfort and the need to wear glasses. |
| Primary desk with long coding or spreadsheet sessions | Physical monitors | The cited studies give the highest overall experience to the physical workstation and identify usability costs for virtual-only work. |
| Laptop plus occasional extra windows | Virtual displays or a hybrid setup | Virtual screens can expand a single display without permanent desk hardware. |
| Desk work mixed with paper, phone and frequent physical tasks | Hybrid setup | A physical main screen keeps ordinary desk interactions easy while virtual screens add optional space. |
Before buying, test the exact computer connection, window-management software, text at your normal scaling, fit with any prescription lenses and the longest session you expect to work. Confirm how many independently positioned screens the system supports rather than assuming that “multiple screens” means four full desktop replacements.

The practical verdict
Virtual monitors are a credible way to add workspace to a laptop or mobile computer, especially when portability matters. The evidence does not support a blanket claim that they are a performance upgrade over a good physical multi-monitor desk. For sustained work, a hybrid arrangement is often the safer design: keep a physical main display for clarity and easy interaction, then use head-worn screens when you need portable or temporary expansion.
