The result showed that an early public release could approximate a real person from a short text prompt despite intended safeguards. It did not prove that Pokimane’s videos were in Sora’s training data or that OpenAI deliberately targeted her.
What happened in the Pokimane Sora test
The prompt and the output
TechCrunch tested Sora with the prompt “pokimane twitch playthrough watch game live stream subscribe.” The generated clip strongly resembled Pokimane. Futurism’s December 13, 2024 report described the face as having exaggerated features and a giant grin, calling the result “unintentionally demonic.”

The important point is not that the video was a perfect copy. It was not. The incident demonstrated that a text prompt containing a public figure’s name and context could produce a recognizable approximation of that person in an early Sora release.
Access was constrained during the same period
Futurism also reported that Sora access was temporarily constrained after a surge in traffic. The Associated Press reported on December 10, 2024 that only a small group of invited testers could generate videos of humans at launch while OpenAI monitored potential misuse.

Why did Sora appear to know who Pokimane is?
A model can associate a name with visual and contextual patterns without storing or retrieving a single identifiable video. Public information about a prominent streamer may have supplied enough associations for the prompt to steer the generation toward a familiar-looking character.
However, the available evidence cannot identify the source of the resemblance. Futurism reported that OpenAI had not disclosed whether YouTube material was used and treated the training-data question as unresolved. The clip therefore does not establish that Pokimane’s videos were in Sora’s training set, that a specific video was copied, or that OpenAI intentionally targeted her likeness.

Can Sora generate videos of real people?
Text prompts and uploaded likenesses are different risks
Sora’s February 2024 system-card documentation describes a model that accepts text, image and video inputs. Generating a person from a name in a text prompt is one pathway; uploading a real person’s photograph or video as the starting “seed” is another and generally creates a more direct likeness.

Human-generation access was limited at launch
The AP’s launch report indicates that human depictions were not an unrestricted capability for everyone on December 10, 2024. A limited tester pool and active monitoring were part of the initial rollout, rather than evidence that the underlying model could never depict real people.
OpenAI’s stated policy position
OpenAI’s safety guidance says image-to-video generations involving people receive particularly strict guardrails. A later Sora 2 policy prohibits using another person’s likeness without permission and says public-figure text-to-video generation was blocked at launch. Those are policy and product-control statements; they do not erase the behavior observed in the earlier test, and availability can change as products are updated.

- Consent restrictions: OpenAI’s later policy prohibits unauthorized use of another person’s likeness.
- Limits on public figures: Public-figure text-to-video generation was blocked at Sora 2’s launch, according to OpenAI’s policy.
- Staged access to likeness seeding: Uploading a real person’s image or video as a generation seed was being introduced incrementally because it can facilitate impersonation.
- Provenance signals: The Sora system card discusses metadata, visible watermarks and fingerprinting intended to help identify generated media.
- Detection and research: OpenAI described reverse-search work and other provenance research to trace or identify outputs.
- Monitoring: During the December 2024 launch, OpenAI monitored a small set of testers who could generate videos of humans.
These controls reduce risk but cannot make every output automatically authentic or every safeguard permanent. The Pokimane-like clip is evidence that intended restrictions and observed behavior did not perfectly align in that early release.

How to tell whether a Sora video is fake
No single visual clue proves that a clip is synthetic. Use several checks before treating a person or event as real:
- Check the original source. Find out who posted the file, when it first appeared and whether a reputable account or newsroom can verify the event.
- Look for provenance information. Inspect the file and platform details for metadata, labels or watermarks indicating AI generation. Their absence is not proof of authenticity, because files can be re-encoded, cropped or stripped of metadata.
- Compare identity details. Check facial proportions, hair, tattoos, clothing and voice against verified footage of the person. A resemblance alone is not confirmation.
- Watch motion and continuity. Look for unstable hands, teeth, jewelry, text, logos, reflections, lighting or background geometry. These artifacts are clues, not conclusive tests.
- Use independent verification. Reverse-search representative frames and look for contemporaneous reporting, livestream archives or statements from the person depicted.
- Do not amplify an uncertain clip. If identity or consent is unclear, label it unverified rather than reposting it as genuine.
What the incident does—and does not—prove
- It shows that an early Sora release could produce a recognizable approximation of Pokimane from a short text prompt.
- It exposes a gap between intended guardrails and at least one observed result.
- It does not show that Sora retrieved a real Pokimane recording.
- It does not prove that her videos were included in the training data.
- It does not establish that OpenAI intentionally sought to reproduce her likeness.
- It provides no incident-specific success rate or prevalence estimate for similar generations.
How to compare safeguards across AI-video tools
If you are evaluating Sora or another generator for real-person content, compare documented controls rather than relying on a demo clip or a marketing claim.

What viewers and creators should do
Viewers should treat a familiar face in an AI-generated clip as a claim requiring verification, not as proof that the person appeared or consented. Creators should obtain permission before using someone else’s likeness, preserve provenance information when publishing synthetic media and clearly label fictional or generated scenes. Platforms and publishers should retain the original file where possible, investigate reports and avoid presenting an unverified likeness as documentary footage.
