Recommended Free Tools
Warzone 2.0 crashes for different reasons depending on your platform and the moment it fails. On PC, the most reliable order is: update Windows and the game, install the graphics driver recommended for your card, let shader preloading finish, repair the game files, then isolate overlays and background software. Console players should update system and game software, perform the platform’s cache or maintenance procedure, and use any displayed error code to choose the next step.
First identify where Warzone 2.0 fails
Write down the platform, launcher, exact failure point and any code before changing settings. A silent return to the desktop points to a different branch than a DirectX message, a freeze during shader preparation or a console error screen. Note whether the problem started after a Warzone patch, Windows update, graphics-driver update or installation of a monitoring, RGB or overlay utility.

| Platform or launcher | Failure point | Useful clue | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC, Battle.net | Startup or menu | Silent close, freeze or DirectX/driver message | Windows, GPU driver, shader preloading, then Scan and Repair |
| PC, Steam | Startup, matchmaking or in-game | Crash after a patch or damaged-file warning | Updates, shader completion and Verify integrity of game files |
| PlayStation | Launch, menu or match | System or application error code | Current system/game software, cache or maintenance steps, then the code lookup |
| Xbox | Launch, menu or match | Console error, freeze or dashboard return | Current system/game software, cache or maintenance steps, then installation checks |
PC: follow this order
1. Update Windows and Warzone
Activision supports Warzone on Windows 10 and Windows 11 and recommends keeping Windows current. Open Settings > Windows Update, install all available updates, restart, and check again until Windows reports that no further updates are ready. In Battle.net or Steam, install any pending Warzone update before testing. Do not start troubleshooting from an old game build because a later patch may already contain a fix or change the files that need repair.

2. Install the graphics driver recommended for your card
Use the current driver version that Activision lists for your graphics hardware, install it, and restart Windows. If the crash began immediately after a driver change, record the old and new versions; that information is useful when you submit a crash report. Intel has documented a specific Warzone 2.0 case: startup freezes or crashes associated with driver 101.5186 are fixed by driver 101.5522 or newer. That statement applies to the documented Intel driver issue, not as a universal requirement for every GPU.

3. Let shader preloading finish
On the first boot after installation or a substantial update, Warzone builds shaders. Activision describes shader preloading as “an important part of the first boot process.” Stay on the Main Menu and wait for the progress indicator to complete. Navigating into another menu or launching a match interrupts the process and can produce performance problems or another crash. If the game has just rebuilt shaders, allow the entire operation to finish again before judging whether the update helped.
4. Repair the installation
Use the repair function for the launcher you actually use; do not run both procedures at once.
- Battle.net: open the Warzone page, select the gear beside the Play button, choose Scan and Repair, and start the scan. Let Battle.net download replacements, then restart the launcher and Windows before testing.
- Steam: open your Library, right-click Warzone, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam may reacquire files and can show a result that is different from the number of files it checked; allow the operation to complete before launching.
5. Remove software conflicts
Temporarily close overlays, frame-rate counters, hardware monitors, RGB controllers, recording tools and other applications that inject an overlay into the game. Activision specifically identifies NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner and Razer Cortex as possible conflicts and advises disabling them when they interfere. Update Razer Synapse if you use it, then test with its overlay and related integrations disabled. Also turn off overlays from chat, GPU-control and game-launcher applications for one test session. Re-enable items one at a time after the crash stops so you can identify the conflict instead of leaving every startup program disabled.

6. Use a Windows clean boot when closing apps is not enough
A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup programs disabled, which separates a Warzone problem from a background conflict.
- Press Windows key + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows components.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items.
- Apply the changes, restart, launch Warzone, and test the same activity that normally crashes.
- When testing is complete, return to System Configuration and Task Manager, restore normal startup, and re-enable services in small groups to find the offending utility.
7. Check antivirus exclusions carefully
Security software can block a game executable or quarantine a file that Warzone needs. Follow your antivirus vendor’s documented method for adding an exclusion and add the Warzone installation folder only if you trust the files and the support guidance calls for it. An exclusion reduces scanning in that location, so keep real-time protection enabled elsewhere, remove the exclusion if it makes no difference, and never treat it as a substitute for security updates or malware protection.
8. Submit the PC Crash Report if the failure persists
After recording your Windows version, GPU and driver version, launcher, crash location, visible message and the steps that changed the behavior, use Activision’s PC Crash Report. Include whether shader preloading completed, whether file repair found anything and which overlays or services were disabled. This gives support a reproducible timeline instead of a generic “it crashes” description. A persistent crash report is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling Windows or buying a component without evidence of a hardware fault.

Console troubleshooting
PlayStation
Install the latest PlayStation system software and the latest Warzone update, then restart the console and test again. If the crash continues, use the cache or system-maintenance procedure for your PlayStation model in Activision’s crash and freeze guidance. The exact menu and safe-mode options differ between generations, so follow the instructions for your model rather than applying a procedure intended for another console. If PlayStation displays an error code, search Sony’s PS5 error-code reference (or the equivalent support page for your console generation) and follow the code-specific steps. A code can distinguish a game-installation problem from a broader storage or system issue.

Update the Xbox system and Warzone, perform the platform’s cache or maintenance step, and launch the game again. If the dashboard returns during one particular mode, note that mode and whether another game behaves normally. When maintenance does not help, check the Warzone installation and the console’s available storage through Xbox settings, then use the platform support workflow for any displayed code. Reinstalling should be a later step after updates, maintenance and code checks; it takes time and does not resolve a service or hardware fault by itself.

Warzone closes before the main menu
Concentrate on Windows or console updates, the graphics driver on PC, and launcher file repair. On PC, do not skip shader preloading after a driver or game update. A startup crash that began with Intel driver 101.5186 should be tested with 101.5522 or newer, as Intel’s documented fix specifies.

The game crashes during shader preloading
Return to the Main Menu and allow the process to finish without opening another screen. If it repeatedly stops at the same point, complete the platform’s update and file-repair steps, then remove overlays and background utilities before trying again. Record the percentage or stage at which it fails; that detail helps support distinguish an interrupted process from damaged files.
The menu works but matchmaking or a match causes a crash
Disable overlays, recording hooks and monitoring tools first, because these often activate only when a match loads. Test after a clean boot. If the crash is limited to one mode or map while other games remain stable, include that pattern in a support report rather than assuming a failing GPU.
A DirectX or driver error appears
Capture the complete wording and code, update Windows and the GPU driver recommended for your card, restart, and repair the game files. Do not install several unrelated driver packages in succession; keep a record of each version so you can identify which change affected the result. If the error survives a clean boot, submit the PC Crash Report with the code and driver history.

The game freezes and then returns to the desktop without a message
Use the same isolation method: finish shader preloading, verify or scan the files, close overlays, and perform a clean boot. A silent close provides less diagnostic information, so note the exact activity, map and elapsed time and whether Windows logged an application error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to assume
- Do not buy a GPU, RAM kit, SSD or cooling hardware solely because Warzone crashes. The available troubleshooting evidence supports software updates, file repair, shader completion and conflict isolation; it does not establish a generic component upgrade as a fix.
- Do not interrupt shader preparation repeatedly. Leaving the Main Menu is specifically identified as a way to stop preloading and create performance problems.
- Do not disable every security feature permanently. Use a narrowly scoped exclusion only under your security vendor’s guidance and remove it when testing ends.
- Do not treat one successful launch as proof the issue is solved. Reproduce the original trigger—startup, matchmaking or a full match—after each change.
How to document a successful fix
Keep a short log with the date, platform, launcher, game and operating-system versions, GPU driver version, crash stage, visible code, and each intervention. Mark whether the game completed shader preloading and whether file repair replaced anything. If the crash returns after a later patch or utility installation, this timeline shows what changed and prevents repeating steps that already failed. For unresolved PC cases, attach the same information to Activision’s PC Crash Report; for console cases, provide the platform error code and maintenance actions to the relevant support workflow.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows problems, reduce some settings and temporary-file clutter, and provide an app-crash log; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it. It supports Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. Results vary, and no utility repairs every game crash.
