Which MFC‑9340CDW download should you choose?
Brother publishes several files for this model. The correct choice depends on whether you need a complete setup, a local USB installation, PostScript emulation, a firmware maintenance operation or a network repair. Windows versions and architecture requirements
Brother’s supported-operating-system information lists Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8 and Windows 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions for this model. The support pages also list Windows 11, Windows 10 S, Windows RT and older Windows editions, but availability of an individual package can vary by operating system. Brother marks some older operating systems in grey to indicate that their software will no longer be updated.

Microsoft has ended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Brother states that it will not provide new software or update previously provided software for Windows versions that Microsoft no longer supports. You can still find a listed package for an older edition, but do not expect the same ongoing update coverage available for a currently supported Windows release.

Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- On Windows 10, open Settings > System > About. On Windows 8 or 7, open Control Panel > System and Security > System.
- Read System type. It will identify a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system (and, on some systems, an ARM-based edition).
- Write down the Windows edition and architecture before opening the download page. A 64-bit driver is not a substitute for a 32-bit driver, and selecting the wrong edition can make the installer refuse to run or leave Windows with an unusable queue.
How to download the correct MFC‑9340CDW driver
1. Start with the model-specific Brother page
Open Brother’s official support site and search for MFC‑9340CDW. Confirm that the page heading identifies this exact multifunction model before choosing an operating system. Do not select a visually similar MFC series model: driver files are model-specific, and a package for another device can omit the scanner interface or expose the wrong print features.
2. Set the operating system and architecture

3. Select the package that matches the job
- Choose Full Driver & Software Package when you are setting up the printer from scratch, reinstalling after a Windows problem, or need both printing and scanning.
- Choose Printer Driver & Scanner Driver for Local Connection when the MFC‑9340CDW is connected directly by USB or parallel interface and you want only the core printer and scanner drivers.
- Choose BR‑Script driver only when an application or print workflow specifically requires PostScript emulation, or when you administer several Brother print devices through that driver model.
- Choose Firmware Update Tool only for firmware maintenance. It is a separate operation from installing a Windows print or scanner driver.
- Use Network Connection Repair Tool when Windows already has the printer installed but network printing stopped because the driver has an outdated IP address.
4. Save the installer and verify the download

A substantially different file size or a package whose model name does not contain MFC‑9340CDW warrants stopping and checking the selection again.

Install the printer and scanner drivers
Before running setup
- Sign in to Windows with an account that can install software.
- Turn on the MFC‑9340CDW and keep it powered throughout setup.
- For USB installation, leave the cable disconnected until the installer asks for it unless Brother’s on-screen instructions specify otherwise.
- For network installation, connect the printer to the same network as the Windows computer and note whether it uses wired Ethernet or Wi‑Fi.
- Close applications that may hold a print queue, scanner session or USB connection.
Run the Full Driver & Software Package
- Open the downloaded installer, approve the Windows permission prompt and accept the license terms.
- Choose the connection method requested by setup: local USB/parallel or network. Use the network option if several computers must reach the printer.
- When prompted, connect the USB cable or let the installer search for the networked MFC‑9340CDW. Select the device whose model name matches exactly.
- Allow the installer to add the printer and scanner components. If Windows asks to restart, save your work and restart before testing.

When BR‑Script is appropriate
BR‑Script is a universal Brother driver based on PostScript emulation. It can be useful when an application generates PostScript or when an administrator wants a consistent driver for multiple Brother devices. It is not automatically better than the standard package: if you simply need normal Windows printing and scanning, install the Full Driver & Software Package or the local printer/scanner package instead. Confirm that your selected Windows edition is listed for the BR‑Script download before installing it.
Update an existing installation without creating duplicate printers
- Record the current queue name and connection type in Printers & scanners or Devices and Printers.
- Download the package for the same MFC‑9340CDW model and the computer’s actual architecture.
- Run the installer and choose the existing printer when the wizard offers a device list. Avoid adding a second queue unless you intentionally need separate settings.
- Restart if requested, then print a test page and scan a document.
- If the old queue remains but points to an invalid port, remove only the obsolete queue after confirming that the newly installed queue works.
A firmware update follows a different path. Start the separately listed Firmware Update Tool only when you intend to update the printer itself. Keep the printer powered and connected as the tool instructs; interrupting power or communication during firmware transfer can leave the device unable to complete the update. Brother says that keeping the printer’s firmware current is recommended for optimum performance, but the firmware utility does not replace a Windows driver installation.

Fix common installation and printing problems
The installer cannot find the printer over USB
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Try another USB port and restart both Windows and the printer.
- Remove a stale MFC‑9340CDW queue, rerun the installer and wait for its connection prompt before reconnecting the cable.
- Check Device Manager for an unknown USB or imaging device. A warning icon indicates that Windows has not loaded the expected driver.
The printer is installed but network printing fails
First verify that the computer and printer are on the same network and that the printer’s network status page shows an address. A router restart or DHCP lease change can give the MFC‑9340CDW a new IP address while the Windows queue continues using the old one. Printing works but scanning does not
Confirm that you installed a package containing the scanner component, not a printer-only driver. In Windows, check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and look for scanner-related options. For applications that offer a source selection, choose the MFC‑9340CDW WIA or TWAIN source. If it is absent, uninstall the incomplete package, restart Windows and install the Full Driver & Software Package or the listed local printer/scanner package for your architecture.
The package will not install on an older Windows edition
Recheck the selected edition and architecture, then review Brother’s supported-operating-system list. Software for operating systems shown in grey is no longer updated, and Brother does not provide new software for Windows versions that Microsoft no longer supports. If the required package is not listed for your edition, the limitation is compatibility rather than a missing download link; upgrading Windows, when the computer supports it, is the durable option.
Windows adds a generic printer instead of the Brother driver
Windows may create a class or generic driver when it detects the hardware before Brother’s installer runs. Open the printer properties and inspect the driver and port. Remove the generic queue, disconnect the printer, run the model-specific Brother installer, and reconnect only when prompted. This avoids ending up with printing that works while Brother-specific scanning or device settings are unavailable.

Safety and maintenance checks
Use Brother’s official MFC‑9340CDW page and match the model, Windows edition and architecture before downloading. Keep the installer file until printing and scanning have been tested, then remove obsolete copies to avoid confusion. Drivers, firmware and network utilities have different purposes, so install only the component required for the task. Because Windows 7 and 8.1 are no longer supported by Microsoft, a computer that remains on either system has greater security exposure regardless of whether the printer driver installs successfully.
No independent performance test establishes that one of these packages prints faster than another. The practical choice is therefore functional: the complete package for a full setup, the local package for a direct connection, BR‑Script for a PostScript-specific workflow, the network utility for an IP mismatch, and the firmware tool for printer firmware maintenance.
