The iTunes message “could not connect to the iPhone or iPad because an invalid response was received from the device” usually means the USB communication session is broken. Start with a known-good data cable, another USB port and, if possible, another computer; then restart both devices, update iTunes and iOS, check security software and automatic date/time, and leave an iOS network reset until last. A separate “Invalid response received” message in YouTube on Brave requires browser and Shields troubleshooting instead.
Identify which “Invalid response received” error you have
iTunes and an iPhone or iPad
The primary error appears when iTunes cannot establish a usable USB session with an iPhone or iPad. The wording is typically: “iTunes could not connect to the iPhone or iPad because an invalid response was received from the device.” MacReports describes the condition plainly: “This error occurs when the USB communication to your iOS device is broken.” That does not, by itself, prove that the phone, tablet or computer has suffered permanent damage.

GeeksChalk reported the same message with iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in an update dated September 28, 2026. Its first recommendations were still practical connection checks: try another compatible cable and another USB port.
YouTube in the Brave browser
Android users can see “Invalid response received” while playing a YouTube video in Brave. That is a different failure path: the browser session, Brave Shields, account state, cache or YouTube’s service behavior can be involved. A Brave Community discussion dated May 14, 2021 recorded a responder suggesting that Shields be turned off temporarily; the original poster later said the problem was fixed. UGetFix (September 22, 2021) also lists refreshes, blocker changes, browser or cache problems and trying the YouTube app as possible remedies.

Why the same words do not mean the same thing
“Invalid response” is a description of a response that the receiving software could not use, not a unique diagnostic code. The iTunes case is a wired device-communication problem. The Brave case is a web playback session problem. Follow only the section that matches what is on your screen; changing iPhone network settings will not repair a Brave playback session, and turning off browser Shields will not repair a damaged USB link.
Is the iTunes error dangerous?
The message itself is not evidence of malware or data loss. It indicates that iTunes did not receive a valid reply through the USB connection. A loose connector, a charge-only or damaged cable, a failing port, a hub, a locked device, software incompatibility or a security utility interrupting traffic can all leave the session incomplete. Because the available guidance is qualitative, there is no reliable percentage for how often each cause occurs or how often a particular fix succeeds.
Do not unplug the device while an iOS update, restore or sync is actively writing data unless iTunes is clearly stalled and you have no safer option. During ordinary connection testing, however, disconnecting and reconnecting after closing iTunes is appropriate.

Prepare for a clean connection test
- Have a compatible cable that carries data, not only electrical power. Match the connector on the device: Lightning or USB-C as applicable.
- Keep the iPhone or iPad charged enough to remain on and leave it unlocked when reconnecting.
- Use a direct computer port for the first test. A hub or adapter adds another connection that can fail, so use one only when a direct port is unavailable.
- If you can, use a second computer. A change in result helps separate a device or cable problem from a problem on the original computer.
- Close programs that may compete for the same device connection, and save any work before restarting the computer.
Fix the iTunes device error in the right order
1. Test the cable, port and computer
Begin with the physical link because it is the shortest path to a diagnosis. Disconnect the cable from both ends, inspect the plugs for visible damage or debris, and reconnect firmly. Do not force a connector or scrape inside a port.

- Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup
- Replace the current cable with a known-good, compatible Lightning or USB-C data cable.
- Connect directly to a different USB port on the same computer. Avoid a hub for this test.
- If the error remains, connect the iPhone or iPad to another computer that has a suitable iTunes installation.
- Observe the result after each single change. If one cable works, the original cable is the leading suspect. If every cable fails on one port but works elsewhere, the port or its computer-side hardware is implicated. If the device fails on multiple computers and cables, continue with the software checks below.
A cable sold for charging may not provide the data conductors required for syncing. When shopping, the useful description is “Lightning USB cable for iPhone” or the equivalent USB-C data specification; select the connector that matches your device and confirm that the cable supports data and sync rather than charging alone.
2. Reset the connection session
A temporary process or USB state can survive until one side is restarted. Reset it without changing settings:
- Close iTunes completely.
- Restart the computer.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Unlock the device and leave the screen active.
- Open iTunes again and reconnect with the replacement or alternate cable and port.
Test after the restart before making additional changes. If the connection works only immediately after a reboot, note that behavior; it points toward a session, driver or background-software conflict rather than proving that the cable is defective.
3. Update iTunes, the operating system and iOS
Compatibility problems can prevent a current device from communicating correctly with an older computer installation. Install available updates for:

- iTunes on the computer.
- The computer’s operating system.
- iOS or iPadOS on the connected device, using the device’s normal software-update mechanism when possible.
Restart after updates finish, then repeat the direct-cable test. If iTunes still produces the same message, uninstall and reinstall iTunes from the normal software-management path for your computer, restart, and test again. Reinstalling replaces the application files; it does not make a damaged cable or port work.
4. Check software that can block USB communication
Third-party security software can interfere with device communication. Review firewall, endpoint-security or device-control utilities on the computer and look for a rule that blocks iTunes or removable devices. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent workaround. If your security product offers a documented way to allow iTunes or temporarily pause a specific device-control feature, use that narrow test, reconnect, and immediately restore protection afterward.
If the error disappears only while a particular security component is paused, consult that product’s support instructions for a lasting allow-list or policy adjustment. If pausing protection makes no difference, re-enable it and continue; the test is not proof that the security product is the cause.
5. Correct automatic date and time settings
Incorrect clocks can break authentication and software handshakes. On both the computer and the iPhone or iPad, enable automatic date and time using the operating system’s own Date & Time settings. Confirm the time zone is correct, restart if either system changed its clock, and repeat the connection test.

6. Reset iOS network settings only as a late step
MacReports lists resetting network settings on iOS as an option after simpler checks fail. This is not a harmless USB toggle: it removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and other network settings. Record passwords you will need before proceeding.
- Open the iPhone or iPad’s Settings app.
- Use the Settings search field for Reset Network Settings, or open the device’s Transfer or Reset section and choose the network-reset command shown by your iOS version.
- Confirm the reset, allow the device to restart, reconnect to Wi-Fi if required, and test iTunes again.
Menu names can differ by iOS release. Choose the command explicitly labeled for network settings, not an option that erases all content and settings.
Choose between a cable replacement and a port or adapter change
Both a replacement cable and a different port can be sensible tests, but they answer different questions. Use this comparison to avoid buying hardware before isolating the fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Test | What it changes | What to verify | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Different Lightning or USB-C cable | The entire cable and its connectors | Correct connector and confirmed data/sync capability | If the new cable works, the original cable is the likely cause |
| Different USB port | The computer-side socket and its controller path | Direct port rather than a hub where possible | If only one port works, investigate that port or its hardware |
| Port adapter or hub | Adds an intermediate device and connection | That it supports data, not just charging | Useful when no direct port is available, but it introduces another possible failure point |
| Another computer | The original computer’s software and USB hardware | Current iTunes and operating-system support | Working elsewhere points toward the first computer; failing everywhere points toward the cable or iOS device |
No source establishes a particular cable brand, adapter model or guaranteed success rate. Select for connector compatibility and data capability, then use the one-change-at-a-time test above.

- Multiple Length Options: Package includes 6 cables in various lengths of 3, 3, 6, 6, 6, and 10 feet, providing flexibility for home, office, car, and travel use
Use the result to narrow the fault
- Works with another cable: Stop using the cable that failed. A cable can continue charging while its data conductors or connector contacts are unreliable.
- Works in another port: Use the functioning direct port and have the original port checked if other USB devices also disconnect there.
- Works on another computer: Concentrate on the first computer’s iTunes installation, operating-system updates, USB drivers and security policies.
- Fails with multiple cables, ports and computers: The remaining suspects include the device connector, the device’s iOS installation or a broader hardware fault. Avoid repeated resets that erase data; preserve a backup if the device can still back up by another method and seek device-service guidance.
- Works only after restarts: Record which restart helps and whether iTunes, the operating system or security software was updated. That pattern is useful when escalating the problem.
Fix “Invalid response received” while watching YouTube in Brave
Use these steps only if the message appears in Brave during YouTube playback, especially on Android. They target the browser session rather than the iTunes USB connection.
1. Reload and test another video
- Reload the YouTube page.
- Try a second video to determine whether the failure is limited to one stream.
- Close the tab, open a new tab and sign in again if the session appears stale.
If only one video fails while others play, the problem may be specific to that video or YouTube’s service response rather than a damaged browser installation.
2. Temporarily turn off Brave Shields for YouTube
Brave Community guidance for this message included disabling Shields temporarily, and the original poster reported that this resolved the playback problem. Open the Shields control for the YouTube page, switch protection off for that site only, reload the page and test playback. Keep the change limited to the test: Shields affect tracker and advertisement behavior, so do not treat a global, permanent disablement as the fix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. Check blockers and cached browser data
UGetFix associates this variant with ad blockers, Brave Shields, browser cache and account naming. If a separate content-blocking extension is installed, pause it for YouTube, reload and test. If that changes the result, re-enable the extension and adjust only its YouTube site rule if the extension provides one.
Clear cached data for YouTube through Brave’s site or privacy settings, then sign in again and retry. Clearing site data can remove local preferences and log you out, so make sure you know the account credentials first. If playback remains broken, compare the same account and video in the official YouTube app; the app test helps distinguish a Brave-only problem from an account or service issue.
4. Restore the safer configuration
After testing, turn Shields and any paused blocker back on unless you have deliberately chosen a narrowly scoped site rule. If the video works only with protections disabled, the next step is to review the conflicting rule or extension rather than leaving all browsing protections off.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume the phrase proves the iPhone or iPad is permanently broken before trying another data cable and port.
- Do not use a charge-only cable for a sync test.
- Do not make a hub the first test when a direct computer port is available.
- Do not reset iOS network settings before simpler physical and software checks; the reset deletes saved Wi-Fi passwords.
- Do not leave antivirus, firewall or browser protections disabled after a diagnostic test.
- Do not confuse the Brave YouTube message with the iTunes device message; they require different troubleshooting paths.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing settings when the error is gone and the device syncs reliably through the same cable and port. If the message persists after testing a known-good data cable, another direct port, a second computer, current software, automatic clocks and the security-software check, further repeated resets are unlikely to add useful information. Write down the exact error text, device model, iOS version, iTunes version, cable type, ports and computers tested, and which steps changed the result. That record gives a repair or support technician a reproducible starting point without erasing the device unnecessarily.
