To hide the Recycle Bin on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop, open Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings, clear Recycle Bin, and select OK. This removes only the desktop icon; it does not delete the Recycle Bin, erase its contents, or disable recovery of deleted files.
What removing the Recycle Bin icon actually does
The Recycle Bin is a Windows shell location that temporarily holds files and folders you delete from supported local drives. The desktop icon is only one visual entry point to that location. Clearing the Recycle Bin option in Desktop icon settings hides that entry point while leaving the underlying folder and its contents unchanged.

After the icon is hidden, you can still reach the Recycle Bin through Windows search, File Explorer navigation, desktop shortcuts or other shell interfaces available on your computer. Hiding the icon therefore changes the desktop layout, not deletion behavior. Files you delete will continue to go to the Recycle Bin unless you deliberately use a permanent-delete action or a drive does not support the bin.

An icon can be hidden by a desktop-wide setting, removed from the selected default icons, or suppressed by an administrator policy. None of those states, by themselves, proves that the Recycle Bin or its files have been removed.

Hide the Recycle Bin on Windows 10 or Windows 11
Step 1: Open Windows Settings
- Select Start, then choose Settings. You can also press Windows key + I.
- In Settings, select Personalization.
Step 2: Open the desktop icon controls
- In Personalization, select Themes.
- Choose Desktop icon settings. On some displays this link appears in a related-settings area on the Themes page.
Step 3: Clear Recycle Bin
- In the Desktop Icon Settings dialog, find Recycle Bin in the list of desktop icons.
- Clear the checkbox beside Recycle Bin.
- Select Apply, if shown, and then select OK.
The icon should disappear immediately. If it remains visible, continue with the desktop visibility check below; a separate setting may be controlling whether Windows displays any desktop icons.
If the icon does not disappear
Check “Show desktop icons”
Windows can hide every desktop icon independently of the individual Recycle Bin checkbox. Right-click an empty area of the desktop, point to View, and make sure Show desktop icons is checked. When this option is off, Windows hides all desktop icons, so changing the Recycle Bin checkbox alone may not produce the result you expect.
Turn Show desktop icons on temporarily if you need to verify which individual icons are selected. Then reopen Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings and confirm that Recycle Bin is cleared. You can leave the global desktop-icon setting on or off according to your preferred layout.
Check for a policy-controlled desktop
On a work, school or otherwise managed PC, an administrator policy can override the normal desktop presentation. If the checkbox is unavailable, keeps changing back, or the icon is absent for every user, ask the device administrator whether a Recycle Bin policy is being applied. Do not change organizational settings without authorization.
How to restore a missing Recycle Bin icon
When every desktop icon is missing
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select View.
- Select Show desktop icons so a check mark appears.
This restores the desktop’s icon layer. If the Recycle Bin was also unchecked in Desktop Icon Settings, it will remain hidden until you select it again.
When other icons are visible but Recycle Bin is not
- Open Settings > Personalization > Themes.
- Select Desktop icon settings.
- Check Recycle Bin.
- Select Apply, if available, and then OK.
The Recycle Bin icon should return to the desktop. This procedure does not restore files that were permanently deleted; it restores only the icon’s visibility.
When it still does not return
First verify that Show desktop icons is enabled. Next, look for a managed policy or synchronization tool that reapplies desktop settings. If the PC recently changed accounts, sign in to the affected Windows account and repeat the check there, because desktop icon selections are user-specific in normal installations. A restart can refresh the shell after policy or account changes, but it is not a substitute for correcting the setting that is hiding the icon.

Ways to access the Recycle Bin while it is hidden
Hiding the desktop representation does not lock you out of the bin. The exact route can vary slightly by Windows build and configuration, but these are the normal alternatives:
- Use Windows Search and type Recycle Bin, then open the matching system location.
- Open File Explorer and use its navigation areas or address/search features to locate Recycle Bin.
- Use another existing shortcut or shell entry that your organization has provided.
Once open, the Recycle Bin window works normally: you can restore selected items to their original locations or empty the bin. Hiding the icon does not change the confirmation prompts or the storage rules that govern deleted items.
Remove more than the desktop icon on a managed PC
Individual Desktop Icon Settings affect the desktop icon. Administrators who need a broader, consistent presentation can use Microsoft’s ADMX-backed NoRecycleBinIcon policy on supported managed editions. Microsoft documents support for Windows 10 version 2004 and later, Windows 10 20H2 and later, Windows 10 21H1 and later, and Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, on Pro, Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise editions.
The policy removes most occurrences of the icon from the desktop, File Explorer, programs that use File Explorer windows, and the standard Open dialog box. It does not prevent other methods of accessing the contents of the Recycle Bin folder, so it is a visibility policy rather than a deletion or security control.
What administrators should expect
- The setting is intended for centrally managed devices, not as a replacement for a normal user’s Desktop Icon Settings choice.
- Users must sign out and sign back in for the policy change to take effect.
- The policy is not documented in the cited policy table for Home editions. A Home user should use the standard Settings procedure instead of assuming the managed policy applies.
- Because the policy affects several shell surfaces, users may notice the icon disappearing from places where it was previously available, not just from the desktop.
Policy registry mapping
Microsoft maps this policy to:
SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesNonEnum
The value name is:
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
These details are useful to administrators validating a deployed policy or troubleshooting why a managed setting keeps returning. Editing the registry directly can bypass organizational controls and create account-specific problems, so use the organization’s approved policy-management process and back up configuration before making administrative changes.
Windows 10 lifecycle consideration
Microsoft’s current support documentation states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The Recycle Bin controls described above remain familiar on supported Windows 10 installations, but an unsupported operating system no longer receives normal security updates from Microsoft. If the computer is still running Windows 10, treat the icon change as a cosmetic setting and separately plan an operating-system support decision appropriate for the device.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing hiding with emptying
Clearing the desktop checkbox does not empty the bin. To permanently remove items, open the Recycle Bin and choose the empty command; that is a separate, destructive action. If you only want a cleaner desktop, do not select an empty or delete command.

Assuming deleted files are gone
A hidden icon does not alter Windows’ normal recycle behavior. Deleted files may remain recoverable in the Recycle Bin until it is emptied, storage limits are reached, or another action permanently removes them. If privacy or storage is your goal, address that goal directly rather than relying on icon visibility.

Changing the wrong display setting
Show desktop icons controls all desktop icons. Recycle Bin in Desktop Icon Settings controls that one default icon. Use the first setting to show or hide the entire icon layer, and the second to select which default icons appear within that layer.
Expecting the policy on Home edition
The documented NoRecycleBinIcon support list covers Pro, Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise editions. It does not establish support for Home. On Home, use the per-user Settings path unless your administrator has supplied a different, supported configuration method.
Not signing out after a policy change
Managed-policy changes may not appear immediately. Microsoft specifies a logoff and logon cycle for NoRecycleBinIcon. If an administrator has enabled or disabled the policy, sign out and back in before concluding that it failed.

Safety and privacy questions
Is it safe to remove the Recycle Bin icon?
Yes, hiding the icon is a normal Windows personalization change. It does not uninstall a component, alter the contents of the bin or prevent access through other methods. The main practical risk is forgetting where to find the bin later, so make sure you are comfortable using Search or File Explorer before hiding it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill this free disk space?
No. The icon setting changes presentation only. Files already in the Recycle Bin continue to consume the same space until Windows removes them according to its normal rules or you empty the bin yourself.
Can I still restore a deleted file?
Yes, as long as the item remains in the Recycle Bin and the storage location is available. Open the bin through Search or File Explorer, select the item, and use the restore command. Hiding the desktop icon does not change the restore operation.
Does the managed policy block access to deleted files?
No. Microsoft describes NoRecycleBinIcon as a way to remove most icon occurrences, while explicitly noting that users can use other methods to reach the contents of the Recycle Bin folder.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- For a normal personal PC, open Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings.
- Clear Recycle Bin, then select OK.
- If all icons are missing, right-click the desktop, choose View, and enable Show desktop icons.
- To restore only Recycle Bin, check it again in Desktop Icon Settings.
- Remember that hiding the icon does not empty, delete or disable the Recycle Bin.
- On managed Pro, Enterprise, Education or IoT Enterprise devices, ask an administrator about the supported NoRecycleBinIcon policy and sign out and back in after a change.
