Its defining idea is that each node can serve as a worker, broker, and task-queue manager, instead of reserving those jobs for separate machines. That makes it an unusual microcontroller project—not a way to turn ESP32 boards into a conventional Raspberry Pi-style computer cluster.
What Broccoli does
Broccoli organizes distributed task queues across ESP32 hardware. Rather than treating one board as the permanent controller and the others as workers, the project’s design lets every node take on three roles: executing work, brokering tasks, and managing the queue. Cameron Coward’s 2018 Hackster article describes this as a cluster of identical, multipurpose nodes. Read the Hackster introduction.

The project is called Wei1234c/Broccoli, and its repository describes it as distributed task queues for an ESP32 cluster. Its topics include ESP32 and MicroPython. These establish the project’s purpose and identity, but not a current list of supported boards or a guarantee that the software remains actively maintained.

In a role-separated cluster, a manager or broker coordinates work while worker machines execute it. Broccoli’s described approach is different: each ESP32 can fill all three roles. This avoids requiring a dedicated class of controller node in the design described by the Hackster article. It does not, by itself, establish how Broccoli handles failures, balances workloads, or performs under a particular application.

Why ESP32 boards are not miniature Raspberry Pis
An ESP32 has a processor, memory, and storage, and can contribute computing capacity to distributed work. It is nevertheless a microcontroller platform, not a general-purpose computer equivalent to a Raspberry Pi. The distinction matters when choosing a project: Broccoli is about coordinating tasks across capable low-cost devices, not combining them into one machine with the software environment or resources of a single-board computer.
What hardware to choose
The sources identify ESP32 development boards as the relevant hardware category, but do not establish a specific currently supported retail model, verified parts list, or accessory requirements. Before buying boards, check the repository’s current documentation for supported hardware and setup requirements. Do not assume every ESP32 board is compatible based only on the project name.

- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
The Hackster article compared an ESP32 costing roughly $7 with a Raspberry Pi 3B+ costing at least $35 when it was published on April 18, 2018. Those are historical figures from that article, not current prices or a present-day market comparison.
What to verify before building
- Whether the repository’s current instructions still describe a usable setup and identify compatible ESP32 boards.
- Which software versions and dependencies the project requires.
- Whether the tasks you want to distribute fit a microcontroller-based system rather than a general-purpose computer.
- What additional electronics, if any, the project documentation calls for; the cited sources do not provide a validated bill of materials.
The available project description and 2018 introduction do not establish current maintenance status, performance benchmarks, or detailed setup steps. Treat the repository as the place to confirm present-day instructions rather than inferring compatibility or performance from the concept alone.
