Before building a Polymarket bot that can trade, build a read-only market observer. It can find a market, retrieve public prices and order-book data, save timestamped snapshots, and show whether its data is fresh—all without signing or submitting orders. That smaller project teaches the data flow first and keeps wallet credentials and financial exposure out of the initial build.
What to build first
Make a small program that follows one market and reports what its public data shows. Polymarket’s official Python client README demonstrates read-only requests for midpoint, price, and order-book data separately from its trading examples, which initialize credentials, sign orders, submit them, and manage open orders: Polymarket’s py-clob-client README.

This is a recommended learning project based on those documented interfaces, not a claim that a specific observer has been tested. A useful first version should:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Identify one market and resolve the asset identifier for the outcome you want to observe.
- Request public midpoint, price, and order-book data.
- Save each observation with a timestamp and retain the raw response for later inspection.
- When both sides of the book are present, display the best visible bid, best visible ask, and the difference between them.
- Mark missing or stale data clearly instead of displaying it as if it were current.
- Compare successive snapshots without presenting hypothetical fills as actual executions.
How market discovery connects to the order book
Finding a market and reading its book are separate tasks. An independent API guide describes Gamma as the discovery and metadata surface for information such as market titles, rules, slugs, and identifiers, while CLOB supplies order-book and price data as well as order operations. A book request needs the relevant outcome asset ID; confirm the identifier and request details against current official documentation before implementing them. See the Geenes Polymarket CLOB API guide, reviewed September 7, 2026, for orientation.

Other interfaces serve different purposes: the guide describes the Data API for wallet-position and trade analysis, and separate WebSocket feeds for market events and authenticated user events. Credentials, identifiers, pagination, and error behavior should not be assumed to transfer from one interface to another. The guide also cautions that on-chain indexing does not expose the complete off-chain resting CLOB book.
What the observer can—and cannot—tell you
A snapshot records visible market data at a particular time. It does not show what a later order would fill at, establish execution quality, or demonstrate that a strategy is profitable. Quotes can change between observations, and a displayed book is not a record of a realized trade.

If you want to experiment with decisions before live trading, add a local simulated decision log: record the signal, the observed prices, and the hypothetical position you would have taken. Label it as a simulation. Its assumptions about fills, fees, and outcome resolution must be explicit; the reviewed sources do not establish that Polymarket offers an official sandbox or paper-trading mode.

How the first-build choices differ
| Build | What you learn | Main added complexity |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only observer | Identifiers, public book data, timestamps, and data quality | Collecting and persisting observations |
| Local simulated decision log | Signal recording and hypothetical position tracking | Making fill, fee, and resolution assumptions explicit |
| Live execution bot | Signed order creation, submission, cancellation, and account handling | Wallet security, permissions, order lifecycle, and financial exposure |
This comparison is a project-planning guide, not a claim that Polymarket provides paper trading. Start with the observer, then add a simulation only if it answers a question you have about recorded signals.

- 【What you Get】You will get 1*Pi 5 8GB Single Board,1*RasTech Case,1*Active Cooler,1*Screwdriver,1*Installation instructions,12-month free warranty, lifetime service, 24-hour prompt and friendly response.
- 【More Connectors】There are two USB 3.0 ports(5Gbps simultaneously) and two USB 2.0 ports, which triple total bandwidth ,support any combination of up to two cameras or displays. Peak SD card performance is doubled through support for the SDR104 high-speed mode. It provides a smooth desktop experience for you. Offer Gigabit Ethernet and a PCIe interface, along with dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0/BLE wireless capability. The RasTech Pi 5 Kit use the new 27W 5.1V 5A USB-C power connector.
- 【 Support Dual 4Kp60 Display 】Each of the two microHDMI sockets can control a 4K display at 60 Hertz, now support HDR, offering super HD video for media streaming projects. RPi 5 is the first RPi model that comes with a PCI Express port (PCIe 2.0 x1 with 500 MB/s) to attach SSDs (requires separate M.2 HAT).
- 【 Excellent Chips And Applications】Pi 5 is a full-size Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Pi 5. Pi 5 is more friendly and convenient in the development of Internet of Things, Web development, machine identification, automatic control and other electronic equipment applications and network.
- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
When to add trading—and wallet setup
Move to live execution only after you understand the data identifiers and order lifecycle and are prepared to manage credentials and financial exposure. The official client’s trading examples involve authenticated order creation and management, unlike its public read examples.
Wallet configuration depends on the wallet and account setup. The official README discusses signing keys, funder addresses for proxy wallets, and token allowances, but its allowance guidance contains conflicting statements. Do not infer a universal setup from that README alone; use the current official instructions for your specific wallet and account before trading. A wallet is not needed for the read-only observer.

Keep the first version deliberately small
Choose one market, collect a few fields, and make freshness visible. A literal version of the common build request—“a basic, working script that connects to the Polymarket websocket and fetches live prices”—can be a later extension, but a WebSocket feed adds a different interface and does not remove the need to handle identifiers, timestamps, and stale or missing data. Verify current official documentation before relying on SDK versions, authentication details, rate limits, or API behavior; these can change.
