Can GitLab or Azure DevOps Review AI-Generated Code? What’s Available

GitLab offers two documented AI review workflows; Azure Repos has GitHub Copilot reviews in preview. Here’s what each does and what teams still need to verify.

Yes. GitLab documents two AI-assisted merge request review options, while Azure Repos documents GitHub Copilot reviews for Git pull requests. The key difference is availability: GitLab’s features have documented general-availability milestones, but Microsoft’s Azure DevOps setup page still labels Copilot code review a limited preview. Neither platform makes an AI comment a substitute for human review and tests.

What AI code review means on these platforms

These features inspect changes submitted in a merge request or pull request and return review feedback. They can help identify issues or suggest changes, but their presence does not establish that code is correct. Keep people, automated tests, and repository protections in the review process; Microsoft’s pull request guidance describes review as collaborative and distinguishes it from tests that catch obvious bugs.

GitLab: two distinct review options

GitLab documents both an agentic workflow called Code Review Flow and a non-agentic feature called GitLab Duo Code Review. They are different experiences, with different ways of gathering context and running reviews.

Code Review Flow

Code Review Flow is part of the GitLab Duo Agent Platform. It analyzes changes with repository-structure and cross-file context, and supports custom review instructions. It runs as a CI/CD job, so a runner is required. A review can be requested from the merge request interface, including by assigning or mentioning @GitLabDuo; documented versions also support triggering it through a REST API.

GitLab’s documented history marks Code Review Flow generally available in GitLab 18.8 and records model updates through October 5, 2026. Availability can still depend on deployment, GitLab version, and add-on. The same documentation records a feature-flagged approval and change-request capability introduced in GitLab 19.5. Do not assume that capability is enabled or that AI review can serve as a required approval or merge gate on every deployment.

GitLab Duo Code Review

GitLab Duo Code Review is the non-agentic option. Its documentation lists GitLab.com, Self-Managed, and Dedicated, with Premium or Ultimate tiers and the GitLab Duo Enterprise add-on. The feature is documented as generally available in GitLab 18.1.

For its review, GitLab sends the merge request title and description, changed-file context, diffs, filenames, and any custom instructions to the model. For a large change, if the initial request fails, the feature may retry without the original file contents; that can leave the model with less context and make feedback less specific.

Azure Repos: Copilot review is in preview

Microsoft documents GitHub Copilot code review for Git repositories in Azure Repos, not TFVC. Microsoft’s release notes say it entered public preview for Azure DevOps customers in 2026, while the current setup guide calls it limited preview and says capabilities may be staged, changed, or removed. Treat it as a preview feature, and first confirm it is available in your organization.

Setup involves enabling the feature at the organization, project, and repository levels and linking an Azure subscription. Users can request Copilot as a reviewer. To trigger reviews automatically, configure a separate branch policy. Review jobs use a supported Azure Pipelines agent pool; Microsoft’s setup documentation says self-hosted pools and Windows images are unsupported.

What Copilot does—and does not do

Copilot can leave comments on changed lines and include one-click suggestions. It leaves a comment review; it does not approve or request changes, satisfy required-reviewer policies, or block a merge. Microsoft states: “Copilot always leaves a Comment review. It never approves the pull request or requests changes, so its review doesn’t satisfy required-reviewer policies and doesn’t block merging.” It also does not automatically review again after new commits; request another review when the pull request changes.

Preview limits and billing

Microsoft’s setup page lists preview limits of repositories up to 10 GB, no more than 100 changed files, and no more than 100 changes per pull request. These thresholds may change. Check the current documentation and your organization’s availability before planning around them.

Usage is billed through the linked Azure subscription’s Azure Cost Management. Microsoft states that one GitHub AI credit equals US$0.01 for metering, but that is not a fixed price per review: consumption varies with review effort, repository and pull request size, instructions, and model.

Instructions, privacy, and governance

Azure review instructions

Azure Repos supports Copilot review instructions at organization, project, repository, and path scope. Repository instruction files can be placed at .github/copilot-instructions.md or .azuredevops/copilot-instructions.md. Copilot reads repository- and path-scoped instructions from the pull request’s target branch, so changes to those instructions within the same pull request will not affect that review. See Microsoft’s instructions guide.

Data handling

Microsoft’s Azure Repos FAQ says review interaction data is not used to train or improve foundation models. It also says Azure DevOps does not publish a separate retention schedule for this feature, and Copilot processing geography may differ from the Azure DevOps organization’s data-residency geography. If your governance rules require specific retention or processing locations, check current GitHub Copilot trust and privacy documentation and the terms that apply to your organization.

How to choose and operate the review

  • Confirm availability first. Check your GitLab deployment, version, tier, and add-on, or verify that the Azure preview is enabled in your organization.
  • Match the workflow to your setup. GitLab Code Review Flow requires a CI/CD runner. Azure Copilot reviews require a supported Azure Pipelines agent pool and a linked Azure subscription.
  • Check change size and context. On Azure, compare the pull request with the documented preview limits. On GitLab Duo Code Review, be aware that a failed request on a large change may be retried without original file contents.
  • Decide how reviews are triggered. Azure reviewer requests and automatic reviews are separate; automation needs a branch policy. GitLab Code Review Flow can be requested through the merge request UI, and documented versions also support a REST API trigger.
  • Keep independent controls. Have a person assess suggestions, run tests, and retain the branch protections your project requires. Do not treat a plausible comment—or the absence of one—as evidence that a change is safe.
