For a concrete example, Waitlister supports signup, referral, social-task, and custom-action points, plus webhook events for completed referrals and milestones. The key implementation detail is to preserve fraud signals when signups pass through your own API integration.
Decide what earns points before setting the values
List each eligible action and its consequence before configuring the leaderboard. Common actions include joining the waitlist, bringing in a qualified referral, completing a social task, or completing a custom action. Tell participants which actions earn points and whether points affect rank, reward eligibility, or both.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Waitlister documents signup points, successful-referral points, social-task points, and custom points awarded through its API. Subscribers with more points rank higher on the waitlist. Its documented example defaults are 50 points for signup, 30 for a referral, and 5 for a social task; these are product settings, not evidence that the schedule is optimal for every campaign. See the Waitlister Referral Program documentation.
Do not award referral credit merely because someone opened a referral link or submitted a signup request. Define what “qualified” means for your campaign and tie credit to a successful referral. If double opt-in is enabled, Waitlister applies referral credit after the referred subscriber confirms; without double opt-in, credit is applied immediately, according to its Add Subscriber API documentation.

Use verified events to trigger rewards
Waitlister documents two useful webhook events: waitlist.referral_completed for a successful referral and waitlist.milestone_reached for a points milestone. These can feed a referral tally, a thank-you message, a bonus reward, or an early-access workflow. The vendor says fraud-blocked referrals do not trigger the completed-referral event. Review the Waitlister Webhooks documentation before wiring an integration.
The webhook guide gives example milestone thresholds of 100, 200, 300, 500, and 1,000 points. Treat these as configuration examples, not recommended targets or measured benchmarks. Set thresholds to match the rewards and campaign economics you actually intend to offer.

Make event handling safe to retry
- Configure an HTTPS endpoint and verify the HMAC signature using the configured secret. Compute the signature against the raw request body, before parsing or transforming it.
- Record the event durably before returning a successful 2xx response. Use a stable event or referral identifier, or an equivalent uniqueness constraint, so a repeated delivery cannot issue the same reward twice.
- Keep processing fast: Waitlister says endpoints should respond within 15 seconds. If fulfillment takes longer, record the event and hand the work off to a queue or background worker before acknowledging it.
- Monitor errors and retries. The documentation says delivery may be retried and that webhooks are disabled after ten consecutive failures, so alert on failures and restore the endpoint promptly.
These steps make the webhook an integration boundary rather than an assumption that every event arrives once, instantly, and without error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose fraud controls with false positives in mind
Fraud controls should protect reward value without treating every shared network or repeated-looking identity as proof of abuse. Waitlister describes relaxed checks for obvious self-referrals and normalized duplicate emails; balanced checks that also consider IP, fingerprint, and suspicious patterns; and stricter thresholds that can flag legitimate people on shared office, university, or other networks. The vendor also says a fraud-blocked signup can still join the list while its referral credit is withheld, with fraud signals logged for review.

- Complete Number Set: Plastic table number cards numbered from 1 to 100 for comprehensive table identification
- Standard Dimensions: Measures approximately 4-inches by 4-inches to fit all standard table number holders
- High Visibility Design: Bold black numbers printed on white background for easy readability from a distance
- Versatile Application: Suitable for restaurants, banquets, cafeterias, food courts, and various dining establishments
- Long-Lasting Construction: Durable, lightweight, and easy to clean plastic material ensures repeated use and simple maintenance
Waitlister characterizes its product as having built-in controls against fake signups, duplicate emails, and self-referrals. That is a vendor description, not independent evidence of detection accuracy. Choose a protection level based on the value of the reward and the likely cost of wrongly withholding credit. Review withheld referrals and adjust thresholds if legitimate participants sharing networks are being caught.
Preserve fraud signals in custom signup flows
A custom API integration can unintentionally bypass referral checks. Waitlister says API signups skip fraud detection by default because the service sees the application server’s IP rather than the end user’s. Its API documentation says to forward the end user’s IP and, where appropriate, a device fingerprint in metadata to activate the documented fraud pipeline.

Pass client context through a privacy-conscious design, and do not treat a shared IP address alone as conclusive evidence of fraud. If you cannot reliably provide end-user signals, account for the weaker checks in your reward rules and manual review process.
Monitor the program as an operating system
Track legitimate completed referrals, withheld credits, duplicate identities, webhook failures, and successful reward issuance. These measures help distinguish abuse from integration faults and false positives. Revisit thresholds when shared networks produce wrongful blocks or suspicious patterns evade the checks.

The cited vendor documentation does not establish a general conversion lift, a universal optimal points schedule, or a published fraud-prevalence statistic. Use your own campaign results to assess whether the incentive structure and controls are working; do not treat vendor defaults or milestone examples as industry benchmarks.
Build a checklist for a custom system or platform
Whether you build the program yourself or choose a waitlist platform, compare the actual implementation capabilities—not just whether a product advertises referrals.
- Can it distinguish a completed, qualified referral from a link click or unconfirmed signup?
- Are fraud-blocked referrals excluded from reward-triggering events?
- Can you control duplicate identities, self-referrals, shared-IP signals, fingerprints, and suspicious activity, and review withheld credits?
- Do custom API signups preserve the end user’s fraud signals?
- Are webhook signatures, retry behavior, duplicate-delivery handling, endpoint latency requirements, and failure visibility documented?
- Can you configure points, rank, milestone thresholds, and reward fulfillment to match your campaign?
A platform can reduce implementation work when it combines points, fraud controls, and useful events. A custom system gives you control over qualification and fulfillment, but you must build the validation, durable event handling, idempotency, monitoring, and review workflow yourself.
