If your Samsung phone says “Enter Network Lock Control Key,” request a network unlock from the carrier that locked it. The NCK (Network Control Key), also called a subsidy unlock code, is assigned by the mobile service provider—not a universal Samsung code. Start with the original carrier or the seller who can identify it, and follow that carrier’s instructions.
What the “Network Lock Control Key” message means
A network lock restricts a phone to a particular mobile provider. The NCK is the carrier’s credential or part of its process for removing that restriction. Samsung Canada says the service provider assigns the code and directs customers to that provider for help: Samsung Support: Network lock on Galaxy phone.

Samsung does not set one eligibility checklist for every Galaxy phone. Requirements vary by carrier, so confirm the rules for your original carrier, country, device, and account rather than relying on a generic list. Samsung’s US guidance also recommends checking compatibility and carrier requirements before moving service: Samsung Support: Move your Galaxy phone to a different service carrier.
How to request your Samsung network unlock
- Record the exact message. Note whether it says “Enter Network Lock Control Key,” asks for a SIM PIN or PUK, or shows an organization or management notice. Also note whether you bought the phone used or received it through work.
- Identify the original carrier. Check the purchase receipt, seller, packaging, carrier account, or phone branding. If you cannot tell, ask the seller or contact likely carriers with proof of ownership; do not guess at unlock codes.
- Contact the carrier through its official support channel. Ask for a network unlock or NCK for your specific phone. Ask what eligibility rules apply, which details or proof are required, whether the carrier can unlock it automatically, or whether it will provide a code and manual steps.
- Provide the IMEI only through that official channel. Samsung Gulf describes finding it under Settings > About phone > Status > IMEI Information; labels can vary by software version and market. Do not publish your IMEI or give it to an untrusted code seller. See Samsung Gulf Support: Why is my Galaxy phone network locked?.
- Follow the carrier’s instructions exactly. Depending on the carrier, model, and market, the phone may unlock automatically or require you to insert a SIM from another carrier and enter a supplied code when prompted. Samsung Gulf describes the SIM-and-code route as regional guidance, not a universal procedure.
- Confirm the result and service compatibility. Test with an active SIM or eSIM from the intended network, and check that the network supports your particular model. An unlocked phone is not necessarily compatible with every carrier’s network or features.
Automatic unlock or code entry: which route applies?
Both are carrier-controlled routes; the carrier decides which applies to an eligible device. Do not assume that every Samsung phone needs a manually entered key.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. | Route | What happens | What to confirm with the carrier |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic unlock | The carrier releases the device without you entering an NCK; a different SIM may or may not be needed to trigger or verify the change. | Whether this phone qualifies, whether any action is needed on the phone, and when the carrier considers it unlocked. |
| Code or manual steps | The carrier provides an NCK or device-specific instructions, which may involve inserting another carrier’s SIM and entering the code if prompted. | Which SIM to use, the exact entry steps, and what to do if the phone does not accept the code. |
Samsung’s guidance establishes that carrier requirements vary, but does not set a universal processing time or eligibility checklist. AT&T is one US-specific example: eligible devices may unlock automatically when requirements are met, and AT&T provides its own request and status-check guidance. Its rules should not be applied to other carriers: AT&T Support: Learn How to Unlock AT&T Phones or Devices.
If your Galaxy asks for a PIN, PUK, or another kind of unlock
Read the wording on screen carefully before requesting an NCK. A SIM PIN or PUK concerns the SIM card itself; a network unlock concerns the carrier restriction on the phone. Samsung UK’s support guidance addresses both types of prompts and directs customers to the provider for the relevant credential: Samsung UK Support: SIM card is asking for a PIN or network unlock code on Samsung phone.

If the phone appears to be managed by an employer or another organization, the restriction may come from enterprise SIM controls rather than a consumer carrier lock. Knox Guard can restrict SIM functionality or lock a managed device when an unlisted SIM is used. Contact the organization’s device administrator; a consumer NCK request may not resolve a policy restriction. See Samsung Knox: SIM control policy | Knox Guard.
A bootloader unlock is a separate software-development process. It does not provide a carrier NCK and is not a workaround for a network lock.

If the carrier rejects your request or the code does not work
- Ask the carrier to verify that it has the correct IMEI and model, and that its instructions match your exact device and country.
- If a code is rejected or the phone requests another key, stop entering guesses. Samsung’s support guidance points to the provider for NCK handling; the reviewed guidance does not establish a retry limit that applies to every carrier and model.
- Ask the carrier whether it can confirm the phone’s unlock status or provide the appropriate next step. If the prompt does not appear to be a carrier network lock, contact Samsung support or the device administrator, depending on the message.
- If the phone unlocks but will not connect to the new network, ask that carrier to check model compatibility and service setup. Unlock status alone does not guarantee support for every network feature.
Why third-party “master codes” are not the answer
Samsung’s cited guidance identifies the mobile provider as the source of the network-unlock code or process. It does not support a universal Samsung master code or a physical gadget that generates carrier authorization. A SIM tray tool cannot unlock the phone, and a replacement SIM can only help test service after the carrier restriction is removed.
