Choose VTube Studio for a Live2D Cubism avatar and a focused, low-cost workflow. Choose Animaze if you need 3D, VRM, hybrid or Ready Player Me avatars, built-in avatar content, or specialist trackers such as Ultraleap, Sony Mocopi, VMC, audio lip-sync or Tobii Eye Tracker. Both can feed a stream, so your model format and tracking hardware matter more than the OBS connection.
Start with the model you want to use
The file format is the decisive compatibility check. VTube Studio is designed for Live2D Cubism models and does not support 3D or VRM avatars. Animaze is built for a wider range of assets: its documented import options include 2D, 3D, hybrid, VRM and Ready Player Me avatars.

Choose VTube Studio for Live2D Cubism
If your artist delivered a rigged Live2D Cubism model, VTube Studio is the more direct fit. Its workflow is centered on driving the model’s parameters from facial movement, so you avoid adding a separate 3D avatar pipeline. DenchiSoft describes it in its Steam listing as “the tool of choice for any Live2D VTuber!”

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Animaze for 3D, VRM or mixed libraries
Animaze is the safer starting point when your avatar is VRM, a conventional 3D model, a hybrid 2D/3D character or a Ready Player Me avatar. It also documents built-in Holotech content, which can let a new user begin with supplied characters instead of commissioning a model first.
That flexibility can outweigh a more complex setup. Before installing either application, confirm the actual file type from your artist or asset store; a model that looks “2D” in a thumbnail may still be delivered as a VRM or another 3D format.
How the tracking options compare

| Sony Mocopi | Not stated | Supported |
| VMC | Not stated | Supported |
| Oculus input | Not stated | Supported |
| Tobii Eye Tracker | Not stated | Supported |
The list reflects documented integrations, not a ranking of tracking accuracy. No independent head-to-head benchmark establishes that one application tracks every face better than the other. Camera placement, lighting, model rigging and the tracker you select can change the result substantially.
Webcam tracking is enough to begin
You do not need an iPhone to start. VTube Studio recommends a camera resolution of 1280×720 or higher for good eye and blink tracking, with 15–30 frames per second generally sufficient. A 720p USB webcam is therefore a reasonable entry-level purchase; a cleaner image and stable lighting can make tracking easier, but a more expensive camera does not turn an incompatible model into a compatible one.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Place the webcam near eye level, keep your face evenly lit and avoid a bright window behind you. Test the camera’s exposure and focus before adjusting model parameters. If blinks or eye direction jump, first improve framing and lighting rather than immediately increasing sensitivity.
When an iPhone is worth using
An iPhone with Face ID is an alternative when you want richer facial tracking and already own compatible hardware. VTube Studio can calculate tracking on the phone and send that data to the desktop over your local network. The phone is acting as a tracking sensor; it does not need to send a video of your face to the desktop for this workflow.
VTube Studio’s FAQ states: “VTube Studio uses your smartphone camera just for face tracking and does not store or transmit your face or any raw face tracking data to your PC.” Keep the phone and computer on the same local network, and expect connection problems if a guest network, VPN or firewall isolates either device.

VTube Studio’s phone app can be used as a tracker for a desktop installation, while the desktop and mobile versions can also be used independently where the model and workflow allow it. Animaze’s documented desktop path is Windows-oriented, with an iOS app listed for tracking. Check the current installer and mobile-store requirements before committing to a platform-specific purchase because operating-system support and device requirements can change.

Pricing, watermarks and commercial use
| Product or tier | Published price or access | What the cited material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| VTube Studio on Steam | Free | The Steam listing says it is free to use with all its features; an optional watermark-removal DLC is available. |
| VTube Studio mobile PRO | Paid upgrade; amount not stated | Adds longer PC streaming and removes the mobile logo. |
| Animaze Plus | $19.99, with $1.67/month displayed | The pricing page publishes these figures; the billing cadence behind the displayed monthly equivalent should be confirmed at checkout. |
| Animaze Pro | $99.99, with $8.34/month displayed | Includes the advertised Pro-Streamer Commercial Rights for streamers earning $6,000 per year, described as an average of $500 or more per month. |
For a first experiment, VTube Studio’s free Steam version gives you a lower-cost desktop trial. The mobile PRO upgrade is relevant only when the phone logo or the length of PC streaming sessions affects your workflow. Animaze’s paid tiers should be evaluated against the avatar formats and tracker integrations you actually need, not just the headline price.
Read commercial terms before monetizing
Animaze explicitly advertises commercial rights in Pro for streamers at the stated earnings threshold. That is a specific term of the published plan, not a blanket permission for every business use. Confirm whether your channel, agency, client work or sponsorship arrangement fits the current definition.
VTube Studio’s FAQ says individual creators and smaller agencies may use it commercially, while larger companies need additional licensing. If a company owns the channel, employs several creators or distributes the content as part of a larger product, ask for the applicable license rather than assuming the individual-creator allowance covers it.

- Install the desktop application and load a compatible Live2D Cubism model.
- Select either the desktop webcam or a connected phone as the tracking source.
- Calibrate framing, eye movement, blinking and mouth movement while watching the model preview.
- In OBS or Streamlabs, add the VTube Studio output using the capture-source option that matches your chosen window or transparent-output method.
- Run a short private recording and check that the avatar, microphone and game capture remain synchronized before going live.
The exact source label can vary by application version and operating system. If the capture is black, check that the avatar window is running, that the capture method matches the graphics mode and that no other program has exclusive access to the camera.
Animaze workflow
Animaze provides a dedicated capture window, a virtual camera and guidance for video-chat use. The capture window is useful when you want a clean avatar feed in a broadcast scene; the virtual camera is aimed at applications that accept a webcam-like input, such as video-chat software.
- Open Animaze on the Windows desktop and select an imported or built-in avatar.
- Choose a supported tracker, such as a webcam, iPhone ARKit, NVIDIA Maxine, Ultraleap, Sony Mocopi, VMC, Oculus, Tobii Eye Tracker or audio lip-sync.
- Check the avatar in the dedicated capture window and adjust the tracker before opening your broadcast software.
- Use the capture-window output in OBS, or select Animaze’s virtual camera in an application that expects a camera source.
- Test permissions for the camera and virtual camera, then record a local sample before a live broadcast or call.
A virtual camera can be claimed by only one application at a time on some systems. Close video-chat software while diagnosing a missing feed, then reopen it after Animaze has started its virtual camera.
Privacy and data-handling considerations
VTube Studio makes a specific privacy statement for smartphone tracking: the phone camera is used for face tracking, and the application says it does not store or transmit your face or raw face-tracking data to the PC. The phone still needs network access to send calculated tracking information in the desktop-streaming workflow, so review your operating system’s local-network permission prompt.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The Animaze product and pricing material cited for this comparison documents tracker compatibility but does not provide an equivalent detailed promise about raw facial-data storage or transmission. If that distinction matters for your work, review Animaze’s current privacy policy and the terms for each third-party tracker before enabling it. The policy can differ between a webcam, an iOS ARKit feed, a cloud-assisted service and a hardware sensor.
Step-by-step choice guide
Pick VTube Studio when all of these are true
- Your avatar is a Live2D Cubism model.
- You want the simplest path to webcam, iPhone or Android tracking.
- You use Windows, macOS, iPhone/iPad or Android and want broad platform coverage.
- You prefer a free desktop starting point and can live with the optional watermark-removal purchase if it applies to your output.
- Your broadcast setup already uses OBS or Streamlabs.
Pick Animaze when any of these is decisive
- You need VRM, 3D, hybrid, 2D or Ready Player Me avatar imports.
- You want built-in Holotech avatar content.
- You plan to use Ultraleap, Sony Mocopi, VMC, NVIDIA Maxine, Oculus or Tobii Eye Tracker input.
- You need a documented virtual-camera path for video-chat software.
- Your monetized work fits the commercial-rights terms of the Animaze Pro plan.
Use a webcam first when your budget is limited
- Confirm that your model format is supported before buying hardware.
- Use a 1280×720-or-higher camera at roughly 15–30 FPS for VTube Studio’s recommended baseline.
- Position it close to eye level and light your face from the front.
- Calibrate tracking with a neutral expression, a deliberate blink and a few mouth shapes.
- Upgrade to phone or specialist tracking only after the webcam exposes a specific limitation you need to solve.
Troubleshooting the common failure points
The model will not load
Check the file format first. A VRM or other 3D model cannot be loaded into VTube Studio, which supports Live2D Cubism models. Use Animaze for a documented VRM or 3D import, or obtain a properly rigged Live2D version from the artist.
The avatar moves slowly or loses the face
- Lower competing camera use: close other applications that may have claimed the webcam.
- Improve front lighting and remove strong backlighting.
- Keep your face inside the camera frame and avoid rapid distance changes.
- Confirm that the selected camera is the intended one, especially when a laptop has both an internal and USB camera.
- For phone tracking, verify that the phone and desktop are on the same local network and that local-network permission is enabled.
OBS shows a black or frozen image
- Start the avatar application before creating the capture source.
- Try the capture method appropriate to your operating system rather than assuming window capture and virtual-camera capture behave identically.
- Check whether another scene, call application or virtual-camera client already owns the output.
- Record a short local test; if the recording is correct but the live preview is not, rebuild the scene source instead of changing tracking sensitivity.
The mouth does not match speech
Both applications document audio-based lip-sync, but audio lip-sync is an approximation rather than a substitute for full facial tracking. Check microphone selection, input level and noise suppression first. If you need more expressive eyes, brows or cheeks, use webcam or phone tracking in addition to audio.
Tracking looks inaccurate
Do not treat the application name as the only variable. Recheck lighting, camera height, frame rate, model rigging and tracker choice. Specialist hardware listed by Animaze may solve a particular eye, hand or body-tracking requirement, while a well-positioned webcam may be entirely adequate for a talking-head Live2D stream. There is no published independent benchmark here that supports declaring one app universally more accurate.
Final decision
For a Live2D Cubism creator who wants a focused workflow, broad desktop and mobile availability, webcam or phone tracking and a free desktop starting point, use VTube Studio. For a creator whose priority is VRM or 3D compatibility, built-in avatar content, specialist sensors or a virtual-camera workflow, use Animaze. Start with the model format, then verify the tracker, operating system and commercial terms; only after those checks should price or fine-grained calibration become the deciding factor.
