Choose a VPS if OpenClaw needs to stay online when your personal computer is asleep or offline. Choose a home server if local files or visible-browser automation are central to your work and you can keep a dedicated machine powered, reachable, updated, and secure. If you want both persistence and local-device access, OpenClaw documents a hybrid setup: run the Gateway on a VPS and pair local devices as nodes.
The main difference is where the always-on Gateway lives. A VPS usually makes continuous operation and stable networking simpler; a home server can make local capabilities more convenient, but its reliability depends on your hardware, power, network, and maintenance.

What changes when you host OpenClaw at home or on a VPS?
In either arrangement, the Gateway is the central service. OpenClaw’s Linux hosting guidance describes the Gateway as the component that runs on the server and owns its state and workspace. Your laptop or phone can connect to it through the Control UI or remote access such as Tailscale or SSH. In a VPS setup, the server is intended to remain the persistent home of that Gateway; your personal device does not need to stay awake for the service to keep running.
A home server puts that same role on hardware you control at home. It might be a dedicated computer or a machine you already own, but it must remain powered and reachable for the Gateway to be available. A laptop or desktop used for ordinary work can be convenient for testing or active use, yet sleep, shutdowns, and updates can interrupt the service.

VPS vs. home server at a glance
| Decision | VPS | Home server |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | OpenClaw’s FAQ identifies always-on operation, stable networking, and avoiding laptop-sleep interruptions as VPS benefits. | Can stay available if the machine is powered and reachable. A shared laptop or desktop can pause during sleep, shutdowns, or updates. |
| Local access | Usually means remote file access and headless browser interaction rather than working directly on a local desktop. | Better suited when local file access or visible-browser UI automation is a priority. |
| Administration | Requires server administration, including SSH-based updates and hardening administrative access. | You manage the host, its updates, power, connectivity, and any remote access. Keep the Gateway on loopback and use SSH or Tailscale where appropriate. |
| Resources | OpenClaw’s FAQ gives an absolute minimum and a separate recommended headroom range. Browser automation and media tools may need more. | The workload still determines sizing; a small board is not established as suitable for every tool or channel. |
| Cost | No current provider prices or supported cost winner are established here. | Hardware, electricity, internet, and maintenance costs vary by location and setup; no supported cost winner is established here. |
| Isolation | OpenClaw recommends a dedicated runtime for a shared company agent and advises against mixing personal accounts into it. | A dedicated machine can separate the agent from a daily-use computer, but still needs updates, access controls, and backups. |
Choose a VPS when reliable availability comes first
It avoids depending on your personal computer
The strongest case for a VPS is that your Gateway can remain available while your laptop is closed, asleep, or away from home. OpenClaw’s FAQ explicitly cites always-on operation, stable networking, and no laptop-sleep issues as advantages. That makes a VPS a natural fit when you have previously dealt with Gateway disconnects or want the central service to be independent of your daily computer.
This is a practical advantage, not a guarantee that a particular VPS will never have an interruption. The documentation’s recommendation describes the general fit of the hosting model; it is not an uptime benchmark for an individual provider or an assurance about every network or workload.
Remote access is part of the trade-off
A VPS is not physically beside your files or desktop. OpenClaw’s FAQ lists remote file access as a trade-off, and browser interaction may be headless rather than visible on your local screen. If your workflow depends on opening files on a home computer or watching a browser UI, factor in that separation before choosing remote hosting.

Administration also shifts to the server. The official guidance identifies SSH-based updates as part of the VPS trade-off and recommends hardening administrative access before installing on a public server. A VPS reduces dependence on home power and networking, but it does not remove the need to maintain the operating system and protect remote access.
Choose a home server when local capabilities matter more
Local files and visible browser automation
OpenClaw’s FAQ identifies local file access and visible-browser UI automation as reasons to run locally, particularly when you are actively using a Mac. A machine in your home can make workflows that depend on local resources more direct than placing the Gateway on a remote VPS. This is the clearest reason to accept the extra responsibility of hosting at home.

A shared laptop or desktop is fine for experimentation, but its availability follows your normal use: sleep, shutdowns, and updates can stop or interrupt the Gateway.
“At home” still has an availability requirement
A home server is not automatically an always-on service. OpenClaw’s FAQ says a VM needs to be always on and reachable, and names dedicated hosts such as a VPS, Mac mini, and Raspberry Pi as ways to reduce sleep or reboot interruptions. The relevant question is not just whether the machine is in your home; it is whether it will remain powered and reachable when you expect to use OpenClaw.

OpenClaw documents Raspberry Pi ARM self-hosting, but the cited guidance does not specify a model or certify that every Raspberry Pi configuration can handle every workload. Treat it as a documented hosting path, not a blanket recommendation. The same caution applies to any small home computer: match its resources to the tools and channels you intend to run.
Check the workload before sizing either option
OpenClaw’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, states an absolute VPS minimum of 1 vCPU, 1 GB of RAM, and about 500 MB of disk. It recommends 1–2 vCPU and 2 GB or more of RAM for headroom. These figures are not interchangeable: the minimum is a floor, while the latter is the recommended range for more breathing room. The FAQ warns that browser automation and media tools can be resource hungry and may require additional capacity.
Use the same workload-first reasoning for a home server. The published figures above are stated as VPS guidance; they do not certify a particular home computer or board for a specific workload. A machine that can run a basic Gateway may not have comfortable headroom for browser automation or media tools. Likewise, a nominal minimum does not tell you how a configuration will perform under your actual usage.
- Light or exploratory use: Treat the stated minimum as an absolute floor, not a promise of comfortable performance.
- More headroom: Use OpenClaw’s recommended 1–2 vCPU and 2 GB or more of RAM as the planning range for a VPS, then account for heavier tools.
- Browser or media workloads: Allow for additional resources rather than assuming the baseline will be sufficient.
- Linux choice: OpenClaw calls Ubuntu LTS or another modern Debian/Ubuntu distribution its best-tested Linux installation path.
Keep the Gateway private when configuring network access
Hosting location does not remove the need to secure the Gateway. OpenClaw’s Linux hosting guide calls the secure default keeping the Gateway on loopback and accessing it through an SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve. The networking documentation says the Gateway WebSocket defaults to ws://127.0.0.1:18789. Loopback binding keeps that listener local to the machine rather than making it generally reachable over the network.

If you bind beyond loopback, the security requirements change. OpenClaw’s hosting guidance says a lan or tailnet bind requires a shared token or password unless authentication is delegated to a correctly configured trusted proxy. The networking documentation likewise says non-loopback binds require a valid authentication path. Do not treat a reachable Gateway as safe merely because it is on a private network.

For a VPS, harden server access first
The official Linux guide describes an approach for a public VPS: set up Tailscale, verify that a second SSH session works over the tailnet, and then restrict public SSH. The verification step matters because it confirms an alternate administrative route before you limit the public one. The exact access controls you use should match your server setup; the key principle is to protect both the Gateway and the machine that hosts it.
For a home server, control remote access deliberately
A home host still needs a safe path for remote use if you expect to reach it from outside the home. OpenClaw’s networking guidance points to SSH tunnels or a Tailscale VPN as typical ways to access a Gateway kept on loopback. Avoid making the Gateway publicly reachable without a valid authentication path and an appropriate, correctly configured trusted proxy where applicable.

OpenClaw’s Linux hosting guide says the VPS owns the Gateway state and workspace, advises treating the VPS as the source of truth, and recommends backing up state and workspace regularly. This is important when the server is the persistent home of the service: a backup plan should cover the data and workspace that the Gateway depends on, not just the server’s operating system.

Isolation matters if other people or accounts share the environment. OpenClaw recommends a dedicated runtime and dedicated OS user or accounts for a shared company agent, and advises splitting gateways, hosts, or OS users when users do not share a trust boundary. It also warns against mixing personal accounts into a shared company-agent runtime. A separate machine can help establish separation, but it is not a substitute for account boundaries, access controls, and updates.

You do not have to make the Gateway and every local capability live on the same machine. OpenClaw’s official documentation describes running the Gateway on a VPS and pairing local Mac, iOS, Android, or headless devices as nodes for local capabilities. That arrangement can preserve a persistent central service while retaining access to selected local-device tools.
A hybrid arrangement adds more than one component to administer. Choose it when the value of keeping the Gateway online and reaching local capabilities outweighs the additional setup and maintenance. Keep the Gateway’s access controls in place; pairing local devices does not make an exposed Gateway safe by itself.
How to make the decision
- Start with availability. If OpenClaw must remain available when your personal computer sleeps or leaves the house, favor a VPS or a genuinely dedicated, always-on home host. If pauses are acceptable, a shared computer may be adequate for active use or testing.
- Identify local dependencies. If local files or visible-browser UI automation are central to the workflow, favor a home host or consider a VPS Gateway paired with local nodes. If remote file access and headless browser interaction are acceptable, a VPS is a simpler fit for persistent operation.
- Check workload and capacity. Compare the intended tools with OpenClaw’s minimum and recommended VPS figures. Do not assume that a small board or a minimum-size VPS will provide headroom for browser or media workloads.
- Choose a host you can maintain. A VPS means SSH-based administration and server hardening. A home server means keeping the machine powered and reachable and managing its updates and remote access.
- Set the network boundary. Prefer loopback plus SSH tunneling or Tailscale access. If using a non-loopback bind, configure the authentication path OpenClaw requires rather than leaving the service accessible without protection.
- Plan for recovery and separation. Back up Gateway state and workspace. If this is a shared company agent, use a dedicated runtime and appropriate OS-user or account boundaries.
What the cost comparison can—and cannot—tell you
There is no supported cost winner from the available figures. Current VPS provider prices are not established, and home-server costs depend on hardware, electricity, internet, and maintenance in your location. A VPS price alone would not compare like-for-like with hardware you already own or with the power and upkeep of a dedicated machine.
Estimate the costs that apply to your actual setup instead: whether you need to buy hardware, whether a home host will run continuously, what administration you can handle, and whether remote access or local capabilities are essential. Avoid assuming that either option is cheaper over time without location-specific prices and usage assumptions.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the minimum as the target: 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, and about 500 MB disk is OpenClaw’s stated absolute VPS minimum, not the recommended headroom range.
- Expecting a shared computer to be continuously available: sleep, shutdowns, and updates can pause a Gateway running on a daily-use machine.
- Exposing the Gateway without an authentication path: non-loopback binding requires valid authentication or a correctly configured trusted proxy, according to OpenClaw’s guidance.
- Assuming every small board fits every workload: Raspberry Pi ARM is documented as a self-hosting path, but no model or universal workload certification is specified.
- Confusing a dedicated host with complete isolation: a dedicated machine can separate the Gateway from a personal computer, but shared company use still calls for deliberate runtime and account boundaries.
- Assuming local hosting eliminates remote-access security work: remote reachability still needs a deliberate, protected route such as SSH or Tailscale.
