A VPN does not change which Spotify market your account belongs to, and it does not give you a guaranteed way to reach another country’s catalog, prices, or service level. Spotify ties an account’s country to where the account was set up, and its Terms of Use ask users to access the version offered in their country of residence. A VPN is a network tool that changes the network location your traffic appears to come from. Whether that helps with Spotify depends on Spotify’s rules, not on the VPN.
This guide starts with those rules, explains what a VPN can and cannot establish, and then compares three providers on what their own published documentation says about server reach and kill switches. It does not rank five services as winners. The three providers covered here are the ones with checkable feature documentation, and no provider is shown here to work better with Spotify than another.

How Spotify decides your country
Spotify’s support guidance on playing abroad is the starting point, because it determines what your account is allowed to do in the first place. Before comparing any VPN, confirm which country your account is set to.

Spotify says an account’s country or region is based on where the user was when they signed up. That setting drives which version of the service you receive, and Spotify notes that a country change can affect pricing and catalog availability. The details are on Spotify’s abroad guidance.

If you have actually moved
When someone has permanently moved to another country, Spotify’s instructions are to update the account country through its country-setting process. The steps for your region are on Spotify’s country and region settings page. Use that route rather than a network workaround, because the account country is the setting Spotify uses to decide which catalog and pricing apply.
Premium subscribers and payment methods
Spotify says Premium subscribers may need a payment method issued in their new country when they change country. Expect this to matter if your card, bank, or billing address does not match the market you are moving to. Do not change residence details, payment details, or the account country to something that does not reflect where you live. That is a terms and account-integrity problem regardless of which VPN you use.

What Spotify’s terms say about using the service from another country
Spotify’s Terms of Use, last updated September 4, 2026, say users must access the version of the service offered in their country of residence. The same terms say Spotify may change its service offerings and their availability. Read those two points together: a VPN does not override the country-of-residence rule, and availability can change without notice to any particular connection method.
Spotify’s privacy policy, in the version for the United States effective July 1, 2026, says general location can include country or region and can be inferred from technical data such as an IP address when Spotify needs that information to meet geographic requirements. In other words, a VPN does not make your location invisible to Spotify.

What a VPN can and cannot establish
A VPN can select a server in a given country and route your traffic through it. Provider documentation for that feature varies in what it means in practice, and a few points matter before you rely on it:
- A listed country is not always a physical server in that country. ExpressVPN’s documentation explains that some virtual server locations use a physical server in a different country than the one selected.
- More locations do not mean more reliable playback. Location counts measure network reach, not whether Spotify accepts a connection, plays a track, or serves a particular catalog.
- A VPN does not change your account country, your payment method, or what your residence is.
- No provider-specific test of Spotify playback, account acceptance, or catalog access is reported here. The figures in the table below are provider claims.
How the three providers compare on documented features
The table lists what each provider states in its own published pages. Where a cell says “Not stated,” the cited sources do not address that point, and you should check the provider’s current documentation before assuming either way.

The location and speed figures are coverage and speed claims made by each provider. They are not independent measurements, and they should be attributed to the provider that published them.

ExpressVPN’s server location article, last updated August 19, 2026, reports 113 countries and 214 server locations. Its main value for a Spotify reader is the explanation of virtual locations. If you need a location because it is the country your account is set to, check how the specific server is described before you select it, since the selected location and the physical server may be in different countries. The cited source does not describe the kill switch, so check ExpressVPN’s current app documentation before relying on that feature.

Proton VPN
Proton VPN states that it has servers in more than 140 countries and advertises speeds up to 10 Gbps on its high-speed page. Its kill switch guidance describes protection against traffic leaving the device outside the tunnel if the connection drops. The page notes operating-system limitations, so confirm that the feature works on your device type before you depend on it.
NordVPN
NordVPN reports thousands of servers across 225 locations. Its kill switch documentation says the feature can block internet access if the VPN connection drops. The feature may need to be enabled, and the behavior differs between some apps and platforms. Check the setting on each device you use, rather than assuming the desktop behavior applies to phones or tablets.

- Check whether the provider documents the location you need and states whether that location is physical or virtual. ExpressVPN documents this distinction in the cited article; the other two sources here do not address it.
- Confirm the app supports each device you plan to use. Support and behavior vary by platform.
- If you use a kill switch, turn it on in the app settings and confirm how it behaves on that device.
- Do not use total country or server counts as a proxy for Spotify success.
Limits and risks to keep in mind
- Spotify can change its service offerings, catalog availability, and pricing by country. A location that worked for one period may not work later, and the terms allow those changes.
- Changing the account country to a market where you do not live conflicts with Spotify’s country-of-residence rule.
- Provider location and speed figures are published claims and carry the provider’s own update date or access date, as shown in the table.
The Bottom Line
Set your Spotify account country through Spotify’s own settings and treat a VPN as a separate network tool that does not change your account rules. Among the three providers covered here, use the table to shortlist on documented location reach, physical versus virtual server disclosure, platform support, and kill switch behavior. None is shown here to be the best choice for Spotify playback, because no provider-specific Spotify test is reported.
