Yes—many VPN subscriptions let you use one account on several of your own devices at the same time, but each provider sets its own simultaneous-connection limit. Installing an app on more devices than the limit does not mean they can all connect together. Check the current policy for your plan before relying on a specific number.
How a VPN device limit works
A simultaneous-connection limit is the number of VPN connections an account may have active at once. It is different from the number of devices on which you can install the app. If you reach the cap, a new device may be unable to connect until an existing connection is disconnected or your coverage changes.

Providers may count connections differently, and some set limits by subscription tier. A provider’s published limit is a product policy, not a measure of VPN quality, privacy, speed, or value.

Can family members use one VPN account?
Do not assume that one account can be shared with family just because its apps can be installed on multiple devices. Sharing rules are provider-specific, and the account holder may be responsible for securing login details. Check the provider’s terms and household policy before giving anyone access. For example, ExpressVPN’s terms place responsibility for account security on the subscriber; its Terms of Service do not turn a device limit into blanket permission to share credentials.
What to do when you reach the connection limit
- Disconnect an active device: If someone is no longer using the VPN, disconnect that device and try connecting the new one.
- Check your plan: Some providers offer higher limits on different tiers or allow an additional subscription. Confirm the applicable terms and cost with the provider.
- Consider a VPN-compatible router: A router can route connected devices through a VPN connection, which may help when devices cannot run the provider’s app or the app limit is too low. Support depends on the router’s capabilities and configuration.
How the router workaround changes device coverage
With a compatible setup, devices connected to the router use its VPN connection rather than each requiring a separate app connection. NordVPN says its router setup uses one device slot while protecting devices connected to the network; ExpressVPN also lists router setup as an option for covering more devices than its subscription tier permits directly. Verify that the exact router model supports VPN client configuration and follow the VPN provider’s setup instructions. Not every router supports every VPN service.

Choose based on the number of simultaneous connections you actually need, whether the limit changes by plan, the provider’s sharing rules, router support, and app availability for your devices. The policies cited here do not establish which provider is best overall.
