How to Find Movie Filming Locations and Plan a Visit

Start with the official film commission, tourism board, or city website for the place where you think a production filmed. Search its filming-location directory, movie map, or film trail, compare the entry with recognizable details in the scene, then confirm current access with the property or destination authority before you go.

How to find where a movie scene was filmed

  1. Identify a likely destination. Use production notes or recognizable landmarks as clues, but do not assume the story’s setting is where the movie was filmed.
  2. Search official local sources. On the relevant film office, tourism, or city site, look for the movie title and terms such as “filming locations,” “movie map,” or “film trail.” Some film commissions organize locations by type. The Czech Film Commission, for example, lists categories including historic sites, towns, nature, and transport infrastructure in its locations directory.
  3. Match the listing to the scene. Compare stable features such as a building’s shape, street layout, terrain, or other distinctive landmarks. Sets, scene editing, and digital alteration can make the real place look different; visual resemblance alone does not prove a match. A tourism study notes that digitally altered locations can be difficult for visitors to recognize (study on film-induced tourism and altered locations).
  4. Cross-check when precision matters. If the exact site is important, look for another credible location record or ask the film commission whether it can direct you to location professionals. The Czech Film Commission also provides guidance for finding location managers, scouts, or production companies through its locations resource.
  5. Verify access separately. Contact the property or responsible destination authority to confirm the address, whether visitors are allowed, opening hours, restrictions, and any tour requirements. A listing on a map or trail does not mean a site is open to the public.

What official movie-location resources can tell you

Location information is published in several formats, and each is useful for a different task. A searchable catalogue can help identify productions; a map can orient you in a city or region; a trail can connect multiple stops into an outing. For any resource, check its geographic coverage, whether entries identify specific productions, how usable its map or routes are, how recently it was updated, and whether it explains visitor access.

Before you visit a filming location

  • Confirm the precise address; a scene may use only part of a larger site or neighborhood.
  • Check current hours, entry rules, and any tour booking requirements with the property or official destination source.
  • Respect private property and closed areas. Do not enter a site without permission, even if it appears in a film-location guide.
  • Allow for differences between the screen image and the present-day location. Set dressing, editing, and digital changes can alter what viewers see.
