No—you do not need to upload in VP9 to get good quality on YouTube. YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video. VP9 matters on the playback side: YouTube says viewers need a browser or device that supports VP9 to watch new 4K uploads in 4K. The codec you upload and the codec YouTube prepares for playback are separate parts of the process.
What VP9 is—and what it is not
VP9 is a video compression codec developed by the WebM Project. A codec describes how video is compressed and decoded. It is not a container such as MP4, nor is it a YouTube export preset.

That distinction clears up a common confusion: YouTube’s recommended upload format is not a promise about which codec it will use to deliver a video to each viewer. The upload page recommends MP4 and H.264, while separately noting that VP9 support is needed on a browser or device to view new 4K uploads in 4K. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings do not document a creator control or guarantee for assigning a particular playback codec.
Do you need to encode uploads in VP9?
For an ordinary YouTube upload, generally not. Start with YouTube’s published upload recommendations: MP4, H.264, and a frame rate matching the source. Choose an upload bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate. YouTube emphasizes that its published bitrates are upload recommendations, not instructions for VP9 playback.

For example, YouTube’s SDR upload table recommends 35–45 Mbps for 2160p at standard frame rates and 53–68 Mbps at high frame rates. These figures apply to uploads under the stated SDR conditions; they are not VP9 delivery bitrates. Check the current table for other resolutions, frame rates, or HDR. YouTube Help: recommended upload encoding settings.
You might create VP9 files when you have a specific distribution or adaptive-streaming requirement that calls for them. That is a separate workflow decision, not a general requirement for YouTube. The relevant considerations include the video’s motion and detail, target resolution and frame rate, encoding time and hardware, playback device support, and whether you are delivering one file or multiple renditions.

What VP9 can offer—and the trade-offs
Google describes VP9 as a codec for web and mobile video, including ultra-high-definition video, with support for 10- and 12-bit encoding and HDR. Google says VP9 “can reduce video bit rates by as much as 50% compared with other known codecs.” That is a qualified, broad maximum claim—not a guaranteed saving for every source, encoder, or visual-quality target. The official material considered here does not establish a current independent benchmark comparing VP9 with H.264 across typical creator videos. Google’s VP9 overview.
Higher compression can be useful when you need to reduce delivery bandwidth, but an encode also takes time and must be decoded by viewers’ devices. Larger frame sizes increase delivery bandwidth needs and decoding demands. For adaptive streaming, multiple renditions let a player select a version suited to available bandwidth; a single file does not provide the same choice. Google’s file-based guidance covers these trade-offs and is aimed at VOD distribution, not live encoding. Google’s VP9 VOD settings.

Practical settings: YouTube upload versus VP9 VOD encoding
For a standard YouTube upload
- Export an MP4 using H.264 video, following YouTube’s current recommended upload settings.
- Keep the exported frame rate the same as the source rather than converting frame rates without a specific need.
- Choose the upload bitrate for your resolution and frame rate from YouTube’s applicable table. Do not mistake those values for playback bitrates or VP9 settings.
- After upload processing, assess the available playback quality on the devices and connections your audience uses. YouTube’s published guidance does not provide a way to force VP9 for a particular video.
If you have a specific VP9 VOD requirement
Google’s VP9 recommendations are technical starting points for file-based encoding and broad web/mobile distribution. They are not YouTube upload rules and do not cover live encoding, every content type, or every device and network. Google recommends constrained-quality encoding with bitrate bounds; its example settings table gives CQ 31 at 1080p and CQ 24 at 1440p. Its broader web/mobile recommendations describe a two-pass workflow and 240 frames between keyframes. Treat those as scoped recommendations, then evaluate the resulting file against your content and time constraints. Google’s VP9 VOD settings and VP9 overview.
Google also documents FFmpeg and libvpx examples for VP9 encoding. Use the relevant command and settings for your intended output rather than copying VOD examples into a live-streaming workflow; the cited guide explicitly does not address live encoding. Google’s file-based VP9 guide.

What YouTube’s 4K VP9 note means for viewers
YouTube states: “To view new 4K uploads in 4K, use a browser or device that supports VP9.” This is a playback compatibility statement. It does not say that creators must upload VP9, that every viewer receives VP9, or that an export setting guarantees YouTube will assign it. If someone cannot select 4K, device or browser support is one compatibility point to check alongside the video’s available processing and playback options. YouTube Help.
VP9 and YouTube live streams
Do not treat the VOD encoding settings above as a live-stream recipe. Google’s file-based VP9 guide is for on-demand encoding and specifically does not provide live-encoding recommendations. A historical Google announcement described live-stream transcoding and VP9/DASH ingestion, but it is not current operational guidance for creators. Google’s historical live-streaming announcement.

If your goal is simply to keep a pre-recorded video playing as a YouTube live stream, you do not need to create a VP9 file just because VP9 appears in YouTube’s playback guidance. StreamNeo is a separate cloud option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Its steps are to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud. It plays your uploaded video as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month.

Historical context: YouTube’s use of VP9
In an April 6, 2015 post, Google described YouTube’s decision to encode videos in VP9 and reported that viewers had watched more than 25 billion hours of VP9 video in the preceding year. Those are historical, company-reported figures—not current viewing totals. The post also described VP9 as bringing HD and 4K quality at half the bandwidth used by other then-known codecs; that historical claim should not be read as a current, universal comparison. Troubleshooting common VP9 and upload questions
- My upload is not VP9. Is that a problem? Not by itself. YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 for uploads; its 4K note concerns viewer-side VP9 support.
- A viewer cannot watch the upload in 4K. Check whether the browser or device supports VP9, as YouTube specifies, and allow for the video’s processing and available playback options. A creator export setting does not guarantee VP9 playback.
- My VP9 encode takes too long or will not play smoothly. Encoding speed and decoding capability are part of the trade-off. Reconsider the target resolution, frame rate, quality, and whether you truly need a direct VP9 file or multiple adaptive renditions.
- I copied VOD settings into a live encoder. Stop and use live-specific guidance for the encoder and platform. Google’s cited VP9 VOD settings are not a live-encoding recipe.
