1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose cloud streaming when demand changes, fast deployment and managed infrastructure matter most; choose on-premises when you need direct local control, air-gapped operation or can keep hardware highly utilized over time. Hybrid can combine local processing with cloud capacity, but adds integration and operational work. None is automatically cheaper, faster or more secure: the right choice depends on the whole path from ingest to viewers, your workload and your team’s ability to operate it.
What “cloud” and “on-premises” mean
These are deployment models, not necessarily different kinds of streaming software. A managed cloud service shifts some infrastructure responsibilities to a provider. Self-managed cloud means running media software on cloud virtual machines: you gain control over the software stack, but still operate it. On-premises means your organization runs the hardware and software in its own facilities. Hybrid combines more than one of these locations.

Wowza documents its server software for on-premises, edge, cloud and air-gapped deployments, illustrating that one software product can be hosted in different ways. That is a product capability claim, not a general endorsement of one architecture.

| Decision factor | Cloud | On-premises | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demand | Useful when capacity needs vary and elastic resources help. | Can fit steady, high utilization when capacity can be planned. | Local baseline with cloud expansion for peaks. |
| Cost pattern | Often avoids buying local infrastructure upfront, but recurring costs can vary with compute, storage, bandwidth, egress and software licensing. | Requires hardware and facilities investment; costs may be more predictable with stable utilization, but operations remain ongoing. | Combines capital and operating costs. |
| Operations | Managed services reduce infrastructure work; self-managed cloud still needs engineering and operations. | Your organization maintains the hardware and full stack. | Requires integration and competence across environments. |
| Control | Depends on provider, service and configuration. | Provides the most direct control over infrastructure and placement. | Can keep selected processing local while using external services elsewhere. |
| Audience reach | Cloud regions and a content delivery network (CDN) can extend reach. | Needs adequate network capacity and often CDN or edge arrangements for distributed audiences. | Local workflows can use cloud or CDN distribution. |
| Latency | Cloud and edge services can be placed near sources or viewers, but the full network path matters. | Local processing may reduce source-side transmission; it does not by itself improve the audience path. | Can process near the source and distribute through cloud or edge infrastructure. |
| Compliance and data handling | Depends on provider, configuration, contract and applicable rules. | Can support local or air-gapped requirements, with controls and responsibility owned by the operator. | Can keep selected processing or data local while using cloud services for other tasks. |
These are qualitative trade-offs, not an independent cost study or a universal security ranking. For example, Wowza identifies compute, storage, bandwidth and streaming software licensing among cloud cost components; its broader cloud-versus-on-premises guidance is vendor-authored. AWS and Microsoft describe their own cloud architectures and capabilities.
Cloud: when elasticity and speed outweigh direct control
Cloud is a strong candidate when demand varies, a service needs to launch quickly, or your team would rather not procure and maintain all the underlying infrastructure. Managed services can reduce infrastructure tasks. A self-managed virtual machine in the cloud is different: it offers more control over the operating system, middleware and application configuration, but your team remains responsible for engineering and operations.

Cloud is not automatically low-cost. Model usage and architecture, including compute, storage, bandwidth, egress and software licensing. AWS describes regional diversity, availability and elastic scalability as cloud advantages for live-streaming challenges; treat that as AWS’s architectural position, not an independent conclusion that cloud always wins.
On-premises: when local control and sustained use justify the work
On-premises can make sense when local control, air-gapped operation or a sustained, predictable workload justifies owning and operating capacity. Its cost is more than the server purchase: account for facilities, power, network capacity, storage, software, redundancy, maintenance, support and skilled staff. You also need a procurement and replacement plan.

A local server does not automatically deliver a stream efficiently to a geographically dispersed audience. Plan the delivery network as well as the origin infrastructure; a CDN or edge arrangement may still be needed. On-premises does not automatically guarantee compliance or isolation: the organization must implement and maintain the relevant controls.
Hybrid: use it for a real placement requirement
Hybrid can preserve local processing or data separation while using cloud resources for audience reach, demand spikes or analytics. It is useful when those specific needs exist, not simply as a middle ground. Integrating and operating multiple environments adds complexity, and that work should be weighed against the flexibility gained.

Choose based on the workload, not the label
- Favor managed cloud for fast startup, variable demand and reduced infrastructure management when usage-based charges are acceptable and can be modeled.
- Favor self-managed cloud when you need cloud elasticity but also control over the OS, middleware or application configuration.
- Favor on-premises when local control, air-gapped operation or sustained workload economics justify procurement, facilities, staffing, maintenance and redundancy.
- Favor hybrid only when a real requirement calls for local processing or data separation alongside cloud capacity for reach, peaks or analytics.
Before deciding, describe the workflow and measure the workload: stream hours, viewer concurrency, bitrate, storage retention, egress, transcoding, redundancy, staffing and hardware lifecycle. Compare total costs over the same period and at the same service level. There is no established apples-to-apples benchmark here that makes cloud or on-premises universally cheaper.

Design the whole streaming path
Separate ingest, processing and delivery
Ingest gets the source into the system; origin or processing may include transcoding; delivery carries the stream to viewers. Capacity at one stage does not solve a bottleneck at another. For ingest over unmanaged networks, AWS recommends reliable protocols such as SRT, RIST, RTP-FEC, Zixi or RTMP. For live delivery beyond a handful of viewers, AWS recommends using a CDN. These are AWS design recommendations, not a claim that one protocol or vendor fits every deployment.

Treat latency as end-to-end
Latency depends on capture, ingest, processing, network transit and playback—not only on whether a server is local or in the cloud. Processing near the source may reduce transmission to a central cloud; edge delivery may put capacity nearer viewers. For subsecond, video-conference-like interaction, AWS advises considering WebRTC rather than assuming ordinary HLS or DASH delivery will provide conference-like latency. AWS also notes that WebRTC’s stateful connections do not scale as effectively for one-to-many distribution.
Microsoft documents Azure Front Door as using its private network and distributed edge locations for video delivery, with health probes and origin failover. This describes one vendor’s delivery architecture; it does not prove that cloud always has lower latency.
Common decision mistakes
- Comparing only a server quote with a cloud bill: include facilities, network, storage, redundancy, staffing, software and lifecycle costs for on-premises, and the relevant usage and egress charges for cloud.
- Assuming cloud means managed: a virtual machine you administer in a cloud is still self-managed infrastructure.
- Assuming a local origin solves global delivery: audience geography and network capacity still matter; plan for CDN or edge delivery as needed.
- Choosing hybrid to avoid making a choice: it can solve placement needs, but adds integration and operational complexity.
- Equating hosting location with security or compliance: evaluate the actual controls, configuration, contract and applicable obligations.
