To caption a recorded livestream, add a timed caption file or transcript through the platform that hosts the replay. YouTube Studio supports caption-file uploads, transcript auto-sync, and manual entry; Facebook documents SRT uploads for uploaded videos. Twitch’s guide covers captions provided during a stream and their availability on replays, but does not document a general way to add a new caption track after a past broadcast is archived.
Choose the caption method that fits your recording
Captions should make the recording understandable to people who cannot hear its audio. Include relevant sounds as well as speech: for example, music, laughter, sound effects, or a speaker’s identity when those details matter. Captions are not the same as translated subtitles, which render speech in another language. W3C WAI explains that captions convey dialogue and relevant non-speech audio, and cautions: “If you have live captions and you post a recording, you will probably need to do minor editing for accuracy.”

Use the controls available on the destination platform. A caption file with timing is useful when you already have captions prepared; a transcript without timing may work with YouTube’s auto-sync feature. The platform’s accepted formats and controls can change, so confirm them in the upload interface before exporting.

W3C WAI identifies WebVTT as the most common web caption format and also lists SRT and TTML. The destination determines which format you can upload: Facebook’s cited instructions specify SRT, while YouTube’s interface asks whether an uploaded file already contains timing. A plain transcript is not a timed caption file.

Add captions to a YouTube recording
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Subtitles from the left menu.
- Select the recorded livestream or video.
- Add the caption language if needed, then choose Add under Subtitles.
- Choose the method that matches what you have:
- Upload file: Select whether the file has timing, then upload the caption file. Use this for text that is already synchronized to the recording.
- Auto-sync: Paste or upload a transcript in the same language as the speech. YouTube will synchronize it. YouTube does not recommend this for videos longer than an hour or audio of poor quality.
- Type manually: Enter captions while playing the video, adding timing as you go. Include meaningful sounds, not only spoken words.
- Save or publish the captions, then play the recording with captions enabled and review them against the audio.
YouTube’s instructions and supported workflow are documented in YouTube Help: Add subtitles & captions. Auto-sync can save timing work, but it is not a substitute for review: correct names, numbers, technical terms, speaker changes, and errors in sections with music, noise, or overlapping voices.
Add an SRT file to a Facebook video
Facebook’s cited help instructions describe adding captions to a video uploaded to a profile or Page. They do not establish that every kind of livestream replay has the same post-publication controls.

- Open the video once it is ready to view.
- Open the post options and choose Edit post, then edit the video.
- Choose Add captions, upload a SubRip (.srt) file, and save.
- If you want another caption language, add its file separately where the controls allow it.
See Facebook Help Center: Add or remove captions on your video on Facebook. If the replay does not expose the documented controls, check the current options for that account and video type rather than assuming an uploaded-video workflow applies.

Twitch’s closed-caption guide describes supplying captions during a stream, either by embedding caption files in the stream or sending captions through broadcast encoders. It says captions can be displayed when viewers replay a past broadcast if they were available in the original stream.

The guide does not describe a general workflow for uploading a separate caption file after a past broadcast has already been created. If the original stream did not have captions, check the current creator controls for that broadcast; do not assume Twitch offers a post-publication caption-track upload. Review captions for accuracy and readability
- Check names, numbers, specialist vocabulary, and speaker changes against the recording.
- Review noisy, music-heavy, or overlapping sections especially carefully; automated transcription can be less reliable there.
- Include meaningful non-speech audio and speaker identification when they are needed to understand what is happening.
- Check that captions are synchronized and do not obscure important visual information.
- For YouTube recordings over an hour or with poor audio, avoid relying on auto-sync alone; use a timed file or manual correction instead.
