CMAF, or the Common Media Application Format, is an ISO media format for organizing segmented audio, video, and other media for adaptive streaming. It is not a streaming protocol: HLS and MPEG-DASH can each use CMAF media, but they still use separate manifests and have their own playback rules.
What is CMAF?
CMAF is specified in ISO/IEC 23000-19 and is based on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF). It defines how media is organized into addressable objects for adaptive multimedia presentations—where a player can select among alternative media tracks as playback conditions or device needs change.

ISO describes its purpose as specifying “segmented media objects optimized for streaming delivery and decoding on end user devices in adaptive multimedia presentations.” That describes the media format, not a complete streaming system. CMAF does not, by itself, provide a playlist or manifest, a player, a delivery network, or an end-to-end streaming workflow.
What does CMAF stand for?
CMAF stands for Common Media Application Format. “Common” refers to its interoperability goal: compatible delivery systems may use the same packaged media objects, rather than requiring a separate set of media files for each system. Whether that reuse works depends on the packaging and the clients that must play it.

How does CMAF organize media?
CMAF arranges media into tracks and related objects. A track can contain audio, video, or subtitles. It is represented by a header and one or more fragments. A segment consists of one or more fragments from the same track; a chunk is a sequential subset of samples within a fragment.
- Tracks keep media components separate, such as video and audio.
- Fragments hold successive portions of a track’s media.
- Segments group one or more fragments from a track for delivery.
- Chunks divide a fragment into sequential subsets of samples, which can be made available before a complete segment is ready.
- Switching sets group alternative tracks that a player can switch between at fragment boundaries—for example, different video bitrates or resolutions. Aligned switching sets provide time-aligned alternative encodings.
- Presentations combine synchronized selection sets, allowing a playback system to coordinate choices such as audio and video tracks.
These structures give a packager and player a way to work with alternate media and time-aligned content. CMAF does not select the right track for a viewer; the delivery application and player handle that behavior.

Is CMAF the same as HLS?
No. CMAF is a media format; HLS is a delivery and playback system with its own playlists and application rules. An HLS playlist can reference CMAF media objects, but it is not replaced by CMAF.

Apple’s HLS documentation describes a media playlist for each CMAF track, an EXT-X-MAP reference to the corresponding CMAF header, and independent-segment signaling when the playlist’s CMAF fragments are independently decodable. HLS support for fragmented MPEG-4 segments was added in September 2016. Apple cautions that clients based on earlier HLS revisions may not handle CMAF, so a CMAF label alone does not establish support on a particular device or player.

What is the difference between CMAF and MPEG-DASH?
MPEG-DASH, like HLS, is a delivery system with its own description and application rules. CMAF describes media objects that HLS and DASH can reference. Apple documents that both systems can use shared CMAF addressable objects; that does not make their manifests interchangeable.
| Question | CMAF | HLS | MPEG-DASH |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A media format for segmented media objects. | A delivery and playback system that can reference CMAF media. | A delivery and playback system that can reference CMAF media. |
| What does it define? | Media organization, including tracks, fragments, and switching sets. | Its own playlists and application rules. | Its own presentation descriptions and application rules. |
| Can it use shared CMAF media? | It provides the media objects. | Yes, where the packaging and clients are compatible. | Yes, where the packaging and clients are compatible. |
The practical question for a multi-format workflow is not simply “Does it support CMAF?” Check whether the same packaged media fits the intended HLS and DASH clients, including their codec, profile, segment-layout, and encryption requirements. Shared media objects can reduce the need to package duplicate media, but the manifests and application configuration remain distinct.

Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
Does CMAF reduce streaming latency?
CMAF can support lower-latency designs through chunked delivery: a player may begin receiving usable media before the full segment has arrived. Chunking alone does not determine the viewer’s end-to-end delay. The encoder, packager, origin, network, player buffering, and the rest of the live workflow all affect latency. Do not infer a particular latency from CMAF support alone.

- Client support: Confirm that the intended player and device versions accept the CMAF layout. Older HLS clients may not support it.
- Codec and profile: Check that the encoded tracks and CMAF profile are supported by each target client. CMAF does not mean every codec or profile will play everywhere.
- Packaging and signaling: Verify that headers, fragments, playlists or manifests, and any independent-segment signaling match the relevant application requirements.
- Encryption: CMAF may use MPEG Common Encryption, but that does not supply a DRM service or guarantee that one encryption configuration works across platforms. Check the chosen HLS or DASH rules and each target platform’s requirements.
- Shared-object assumptions: Confirm that the HLS and DASH clients you care about can use the same media objects; keep their manifests and application configurations separate.
- Latency: For a low-latency workflow, test chunk publication, origin behavior, network delivery, and player buffering together—not just the media format.
What is CMAF’s current standard status?
As of October 3, 2026, ISO lists ISO/IEC 23000-19:2024 as the published third edition, published in February 2024. ISO’s record shows two amendments, including Amendment 2 in 2026, and marks the standard “to be revised.” Separately, MPEG lists a fourth edition as ongoing and identifies draft text dated August 24, 2026. The published edition and the in-progress revision are different statuses; the ongoing edition should not be treated as a published replacement.
A separate option for always-on YouTube video
CMAF is a media format for adaptive streaming; it is not a service for keeping a YouTube channel live. If your separate goal is to run uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
StreamNeo offers one flat price per slot for uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and a first day free without a card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
