If a voice app deletes text you did not mean to retract, the phrase may have been recognized as an editing command—or the app may have applied undo to a different range than you expected. Without the app name, version, device, and exact spoken sequence, there is no reliable way to identify a cause. Dictation and voice commands work differently across products, so first preserve what happened and then check the app’s own command rules.
Why can a voice correction remove the wrong sentence?
Speech-to-text and speech commands are distinct behaviors. Apple’s developer documentation describes command-and-control recognition as using phrases defined in advance, while dictation recognizes unconstrained text. That distinction helps explain why a phrase that sounds like a correction could be typed as words in one context and treated as an instruction in another; it does not establish how an unidentified app handled your speech. The command’s target also depends on the product. Microsoft Voice typing documents commands that can undo a correction or delete the last spoken word or phrase. QUILL Lite says its correction commands act on the last dictated phrase, while ParusVoice documents voice editing that can act on selected text already in a document. Those examples show why “undo” or “delete that” cannot be assumed to affect the same text range in every app.
What to record before trying to reproduce it
Write down the details while they are fresh. The sequence and timing can help distinguish a phrase that was transcribed as text from one that triggered an editing action.

- International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions.
- The app’s name and version, plus your device and operating-system version.
- The exact words you spoke, in order—including any pause between dictation and the correction.
- Where the cursor was and whether any text was selected when you spoke.
- Which text disappeared and whether it vanished as speech appeared on screen or after the correction phrase was completed.
- Whether the app showed a listening, recognition, or editing status, if visible.
These details are practical troubleshooting evidence, not proof of a particular defect. The available product documentation does not identify which app you used or verify that a bug occurred.

Separate dictation from a standalone command
Some apps distinguish a command spoken by itself from the same words embedded in a sentence. QUILL Lite, for example, says a command must be spoken as a phrase on its own after a pause; within a longer sentence, command-like words are written as text. This is a QUILL Lite rule, not a universal requirement. QUILL Lite user guide

Find the command’s documented target
Look in the app’s official help for the exact correction phrase and what it affects: the last word, the last dictated phrase, a recent correction, or selected text. For instance, Microsoft’s Windows Voice typing page lists “Delete that” for deleting the last spoken word or phrase and “Revert” or “Undo that” for restoring an original version after a correction. These instructions apply to Windows Voice typing, not to voice apps generally. Microsoft: Use voice typing to talk instead of type on your PC

Check whether the app can edit existing text by voice
A voice interface may support both entering new text and editing text already in the document. ParusVoice’s guide, for example, describes selecting existing text, replacing or deleting it, and invoking undo by voice. If your cursor or selection was not where you expected, check the app’s editing instructions before repeating the command. ParusVoice: Edit text by voice
How to test safely without losing more text
- Make a copy. If possible, duplicate the document or test in a blank document so a repeated command cannot damage the only copy.
- Check the app’s documented phrasing. Confirm whether the correction is a standalone command, whether a pause is required, and what text the command targets.
- Use a short test phrase. Dictate a few harmless words, pause, and try the documented correction once. Observe whether the words are transcribed, removed, or whether a different range changes.
- Try undo only after noting the result. If the app supports keyboard undo, use it only when you understand its scope. Microsoft documents Ctrl+Z for restoring an original version after a correction in Windows Voice typing; QUILL documents one phrase per Ctrl+Z press. Do not assume either behavior applies to another app.
- Stop if the result is inconsistent. Avoid repeating a command in the original document. Keep your notes and report the exact sequence, selection, timing, and app/device versions to the app’s support team.
What can be concluded—and what cannot
The documented examples establish that dictation, command recognition, and voice editing can have different rules and targets. They do not establish that your app misheard a sentence, applied undo to the wrong range, or has a confirmed bug. Identifying which explanation fits requires the app’s name and version, its command documentation, and the recorded sequence that preceded the deletion.
