Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Neither a voice AI API nor self-hosted speech models are automatically cheaper or faster. APIs trade provider-managed inference for usage-based bills and product limits; self-hosting gives you control over deployment but makes compute, capacity, updates, and reliability your responsibility. Compare the same workload and measure the whole voice interaction—there is no evidence-supported universal break-even point.
What costs should you compare?
Start by matching the billing unit to the work performed. A price per minute of conversational audio is not directly comparable to a price per hour of transcription, per character of generated speech, or per hour of provisioned compute. The following are vendor-published examples, not a market-wide price comparison. Confirm current rates and terms before budgeting.

| Service or example | Documented meter or price | What the figure does—and does not—cover |
|---|---|---|
| xAI speech-to-speech | $0.08 per minute of audio ($4.80 per hour) plus $0.004 per text-input event | xAI’s Speech to Speech documentation, last updated September 22, 2026, says default server-VAD sessions are billed for session duration; push-to-talk sessions are billed only for audio sent and received. The billing behavior can therefore affect the cost of a session with substantial idle time. |
| xAI speech-to-text | $0.10 per hour for batch transcription; $0.20 per hour for streaming | Rates listed in xAI’s official voice overview, accessed October 4, 2026. These are transcription meters, not the speech-to-speech rate. |
| xAI text-to-speech | $15 per million characters | Listed in xAI’s official voice overview, accessed October 4, 2026. Character-based synthesis should be estimated from expected generated text, not audio minutes alone. |
| Google Cloud Text-to-Speech | Character-based pricing; exact rates vary by voice family | Google describes streaming and long-audio synthesis, REST and gRPC interfaces, and free monthly allowances for some voice families. Consult Google’s live price schedule for the selected voice; a single rate is not established here. |
| Deepgram self-hosting | General price not stated on its self-hosting product page | Deepgram says deployment can run in a customer’s cloud or on premises. A full estimate requires a vendor quote and workload sizing; its page does not provide a comparable total-cost figure. |
| Voice.ai TTS Lite CPU example | About $0.086 per hour on-demand or $0.057 per hour reserved for an m6a.large instance | Voice.ai’s May 2026 material reports these compute rates for its specified example. They are instance costs, not the all-in cost of operating a speech service or a price comparison with a hosted API. |
For a hosted service, estimate the bill using the provider’s actual meter and your expected usage pattern. Include text input events or other separately billed items where applicable. For self-hosting, model compute at average and peak load, including idle capacity and headroom, then account for the work and infrastructure needed to keep the service available. Those cost categories may include deployment, monitoring, model updates, capacity planning, incident response, and redundancy. The cost of engineering time and reliability provisions can change the result as much as the inference bill.
Voice.ai’s TTS Lite example illustrates why instance figures must stay attached to their conditions. The vendor describes a 112-million-parameter open-source TTS checkpoint and reports, on the specified m6a.large CPU setup, a 0.31–0.37× real-time factor and a first audio chunk in under 200 ms. It also reports predicted MOS 3.34, speaker similarity 0.80, PESQ 3.71, and WER 13.0% in its own benchmark. These are vendor-reported results for one TTS workload, not a full conversational speech stack or an independent API comparison. The May 2026 page said the GitHub release was forthcoming at the time; it does not establish the present release status.

How should you compare latency?
Measure time-to-first-audio for the complete interaction, not just one model’s inference time. In a cascaded voice agent, speech recognition, language generation, and speech synthesis all contribute. Streaming and pipelining can let a later stage start before an earlier one has finished, while network distance, turn-taking rules, and end-of-turn detection affect what the user experiences.
A 2026 technical tutorial, “Building Enterprise Realtime Voice Agents from Scratch,” reports a P50 time-to-first-audio of 947 ms and a best case of 729 ms for its own streaming STT → LLM → TTS implementation. Those measurements describe that implementation; they are not a universal target or a direct comparison between a hosted API and a self-hosted system.

Deepgram’s self-hosting page claims real-time inference latency below 200 ms when its service is co-located with the application. That is a vendor claim about inference, not a matched end-to-end conversational result. Do not compare it directly with a time-to-first-audio measurement that includes multiple pipeline stages.
For a useful test, send the same representative audio to each candidate under the same geography, endpoint, concurrency, and turn-taking policy. Record median and tail time-to-first-audio, interruptions, and end-of-turn behavior. Test realistic network paths and peak load rather than inferring the user experience from a model’s advertised inference latency.

What scaling and reliability limits matter?
Limits are specific to the product and deployment. xAI’s Speech to Speech documentation lists a limit of 10 concurrent sessions per team and a maximum session length of 120 minutes. It describes real-time conversations over WebSocket, including function calling and tool access, and lists a US East region. Check the live documentation and your account terms for the limits and availability that apply to your deployment.
Deepgram promotes autoscaling for self-hosted deployments, but a marketing statement alone does not establish capacity for a particular model, topology, or workload. Confirm licensing, supported deployment options, throughput, warm-up behavior, support terms, failover arrangements, and availability targets with the provider and in your own tests. With a self-managed stack, capacity planning and incident response are part of the operating responsibility.

When does self-hosting make sense?
Self-hosting is worth evaluating when control over where inference runs, deployment topology, or data handling is important and your team can operate the system. Deepgram says its deployment can run in a customer’s cloud or on premises and markets privacy, data-residency control, and co-location benefits. These are vendor statements about the offering, not a substitute for checking where the chosen service processes, retains, or transmits audio under the applicable contract.
An API is a reasonable candidate when a managed endpoint and its product capabilities fit the workload and the team prefers not to own inference capacity and deployment operations. A self-hosted model may be a candidate when controlled-environment requirements or workload economics justify taking on that operational work. Neither choice guarantees a particular quality level: test recognition errors, voice naturalness, language and accent coverage, and completion of representative agent tasks.

How to make the decision for your workload
- Describe the workload. Record input and output audio minutes, expected generated text volume, languages, typical call length, and peak concurrent sessions.
- Normalize the cost estimate. Apply each API’s documented meter to the matching usage, and include separately billed events. For self-hosting, estimate provisioned compute at average and peak load, idle capacity, peak headroom, redundancy, and the engineering and operational work required.
- Benchmark the full path. Use the same endpoint geography, audio, concurrency, and turn-taking rules. Measure median and tail time-to-first-audio, interruptions, and end-of-turn behavior.
- Evaluate quality on representative material. Compare recognition errors, speech naturalness, language and accent coverage, and whether the voice agent completes its tasks.
- Verify operating constraints. Check quotas, autoscaling, warm-up, failover, availability targets, privacy terms, and support arrangements for the specific service and deployment.
- Recalculate when conditions change. Recheck current prices, regions, quotas, model versions, and release status before committing; vendor capabilities and billing terms can change.
There is no supported general workload threshold at which self-hosting becomes cheaper. A defensible break-even estimate needs your actual volumes and concurrency, model and quality requirements, hardware utilization, redundancy and availability assumptions, engineering costs, and measured performance for the configurations you are considering.
