Keep drinks sealed and apart from the computer, and power the laptop down before packing it. These precautions reduce the chance of water damage; they cannot make a fabric bag or sleeve waterproof.
Build protection from the inside out
1. Put the laptop in a separate sleeve
Choose a sleeve that fits the laptop, closes fully, and specifies its water protection. A sleeve adds a barrier between the computer and anything damp inside the backpack. ASUS recommends considering a sleeve even when a bag already has a padded laptop compartment (ASUS, “How to Protect Your Laptop While Traveling or Commuting?”).

Padding and water protection are different features: padding cushions the device, while a water-resistant or waterproof claim describes protection from moisture. Check the sleeve maker’s description rather than assuming padding blocks water.

Place the sleeved laptop in a compartment designed for it, with enough room to fit without forcing the zipper or pressing other items against the screen. Check that the bottom is padded, since a drop or impact can reach the laptop there. ASUS and Dell advise using a sleeve, case, or padded backpack for transport and avoiding pressure on the device (ASUS; Dell Technologies, “Best Practices for Use, How to Clean and Maintain Your Dell Laptop for Longevity”).

3. Add an outer weather barrier when needed
In rain, use a backpack rain cover or another weather barrier over the bag while retaining the sleeve as a separate inner layer. Treat the cover as an extra precaution, not a guarantee: coverage can vary, and the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish performance for any particular cover. ASUS cautions that bags may keep out only a limited amount of water and discusses a waterproof backpack sleeve as a weather measure (ASUS).
Use this routine before, during, and after a wet commute
- Before leaving: Confirm the sleeve fits and closes completely. Put the laptop in its dedicated compartment, away from sealed bottles and other liquid containers. Power the computer down before stowing it; ASUS and Dell recommend powering down before transport (ASUS; Dell).
- In rain: Cover the backpack with an outer rain layer as appropriate. Keep the bag upright when practical and avoid placing it in standing water.
- On arrival: Check the outside of the backpack and the sleeve before taking the laptop out. If either is wet, keep the computer off and follow the device maker’s instructions.
Do not assume that a fabric backpack, a padded compartment, or an ordinary padded sleeve is waterproof. HP also advises avoiding liquid exposure, including rain (HP, “HP Notebook PCs – Protecting and caring for your notebook”).

Choose gear by its actual job

If a spill or leak reaches the laptop
- Disconnect power immediately. Unplug the AC adapter.
- Shut the computer down promptly. Do not leave it running to save work or test whether it still works.
- Keep it off until the liquid has dried. Lenovo’s guidance says to wait until all liquid is dry before turning the computer on again (Lenovo, “What should I do if I spill liquid on the computer?”).
- Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific recovery advice. Instructions can differ by device; the cited guidance does not establish one universal drying method or a fixed number of hours that makes restarting safe.
Huawei Support UK states, “HUAWEI laptops are not waterproof” (“How to save my HUAWEI laptop from liquid damage”). That statement applies specifically to Huawei laptops, not every laptop model.
